Examination scam

Sir,

We have heard of the various scams (Ghotalas) involving those at the helm of affairs enjoying virtual powers and privileges which have been rocking the country from time to time, but the examination scam reported in the DE dated 27/10/2002 involving 62 students alongwith the entire staff of invigilators is seldom heard of and thus, indeed, rightly dubbed as rarest of its kind. The malpractices in exam's such as copying by students sometimes with outside help in a few cases and that too by the non serious students resorted to by them by escaping the eyes of invigilators can not be ruled out but not to the blatant extent of the latest happening. These malpractices can not be allowed to take place and nobody including the educational authorities as well as the parents of the students would be happy with the malpractice, rather they would be facing the ignominy from their kith and kins and also from their near and dear one's for no faults of their own in view of such reports.

By resorting to this practice the students involved have not done any good neither to themselves, their Alma-mater, their parents nor to the nation as well. And it would not be wrong if I say the students are cheating none else but themselves and their parents etc, if we understand the true purpose of acquiring education.

What is the true purpose of education? Why it is necessary for all to acquire education? And does the education acquired/completed through such malpractices of any help in the real sense in a practical life? These are the questions whose answers I would feel fit to narrate here in a few words as per my own understanding. We have infact twin purpose of education. One is to complete the minimum required qualification to be able to get employment in order to earn livelihood. And the second is to develop the brain to the level so as to be able to utilise the knowledge/wisdom gained through the schooling for the right purpose and right cause. And further to be able to countenance life to a true perspective. And also of course to be able to read and write.

To answer the second question I would say it is only by being educated that one can contribute towards the nation building, its progress and prosperity. And the answer to my last question is emphatic no, because it is only through sincere and well determined pursuance of studies sans involvement of students in any such malpractices, that the various educational institutions would educate students with worth, calibre and talents fully competent to facing the challenges of life with strength and vigour and in whom the country would find the real gems in whichever fields of life they join and render their coveted services as to be able to prove themselves as the real nation builders.

Therefore those at the helm of affairs in the education department should take all effective steps to curb such oboxious practices so as to stem the tide of deterioration seemingly taking place in our moral standards and values with which the society is perceived to be currently afflicted. I sincerely send a word of advice to these students to understand the true purpose of education and pursue their studies wholeheartedly and sincerely without succubing to such malpractices because it is only by rightly pursuing their education, they can shape their life and career, fulfill the expectation of their parents, teachers (Gurus) and finally become a true builders of the nation.

Future of PSU employees

Sir,

During the prevailing political scenario, almost every political party in India has its own opinion regarding implementation of disinvestment as well as privatising policy of Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs). No doubt, it is a bold step of Government of India to liberalise the economy of the country. But the main reason of resentment of the working class of PSUs is regarding Government's callous attitude towards their problems and career prospects. Before the closure of privatising of these Public Sectors, Government must frame and implement its strategy/policies regarding the future of the employees who have less than 5 years of their remaining service. They should be benefited by one time handsome settlement amount under the Government's golden handshake scheme. This scheme should be on the pattern of VRS scheme, whereas employees who have long span of their remaining service, should be adjusted in Government Departments so that they have their future safe and secure. By doing so, Government will be successful in achieving its task of disinvestment as well as in safeguarding the future of the employees of Public Sectors. Instead of providing aids like budgetary support every year to these units, Government would be successful in achieving its task only after negotiations as well as mutual cooperation and understanding with different labour unions of the country.

Healing touch

Sir,

It is true that people of J&K as a whole have rejected National Conference on the basis of non performance, nepotism and corruption. It was very encouraging to read that the post poll alliance leaders like Gh. Nabi Azad and Mufti Mohd Sayeed want to give a healing touch to current situation. The state has been witnessing violence for 14 years now but nothing has been done so far to lessen the miseries of lakhs of Hindus, Muslims and Sikhs who were forced to migrate from their homes by the so called champions of Islam. This vital issue of grave human injustice has also not figured in the common minimum programme (CMP) of the present alliance.

One is hopeful from the sincere speeches of the Chief Minister Mr. Mufti Mohd Sayeed. It is hoped that he will personally look into this issue and try to transform his dream of making Kashmir a mini India once again.

Currency notes

Sir,

Union Government should take note of color photo-copies of currency notes being forced in circulation by miscreants taking advantage of latest technical advances of fine color photo-technology. The aspect may cause worry to even hoarders of black money and corrupt ones for whom currency is the oxygen of their life-lines! It is time that in interest of all, Government may force banking transaction by curbing currency circulation in a drastic manner so that at least printing of currency notes of Rs 500 and 1000 denominations may not be needed.

It is beyond understanding why Reserve Bank of India or Union Government took reverse decision to spend high-printing cost on Rupees-5 currency notes with low life! Rather it would have been better to gradually replace notes of Rupees-10 also by coins. Rupees 20 currency notes were earlier discontinued for being unpopular denomination. There is no sense in re-introducing this unpopular denomination of currency notes.
