4th test doomed for draw
Chanderpaul, Jacobs make merry for West Indies

ST JOHN’s (ANTIGUA), May 14: Having failed to bowl out the West Indians within the follow-on mark, India reconciled themselves to the fourth cricket test meandering towards a tame draw here today.

Following in his skipper Carl Hooper’s footsteps, Shivnarine Chanderpaul too struck his third century of the series and West Indies reached 494 for five at lunch on the fifth and final day here today.

Chanderpaul, who resumed at his overnight score of 80, completed his fifth test hundred, four of which have come against India, with his 15th four, a drive on the on-side off Zaheer Khan. Chanderpaul was unbeaten on 106 at the break.

However, it was wicketkeeper batsman Ridley Jacobs who did the bulk of the scoring in the morning session and was batting on 77 with nine fours and three smashing sixes.

Jacobs, who was out for zero in the only innings he batted in the previous test, seemed to compensate for that failure and was in a punishing mood, providing ample entertainment to the spectators on an otherwise listless day.

Jacobs appeared to continue the newly found batting form of wicketkeepers in this series. After the ‘keepers of both sides had failed miserably in the first three tests, Ratra struck a hundred in the Indian innings here and now Jacobs also was well set for a three-figure score.

Chanderpaul batted extremely slowly taking nearly one and half hours to progress into his nineties this morning. Once there, he moved more swiftly and his last four scoring shots were boundaries.

Chanderpaul, who scored 140 and 101 not out in the first and third tests respectively, batted for nearly eight hours for his hundred. He has now more than 400 runs in this series and is second only to Hooper who has scored more than 500, his career-best, with one double-century and two centuries.

Jacobs’ was an innings in contrast as he flayed the Indian bowlers and treated them with utmost contempt. Unbeaten on 18 overnight, Jacobs raised his half-century off only 97 balls with five fours and two sixes. This was his eighth half century in 39 tests.

Jacobs added two more sixes to his one overnight, hoisting Tendulkar to the onside and then slamming Ashish Nehra on to the roof of the press box. (PTI)

Injured Kumble may be operated today

BANGALORE, May 14: Ace leg-spinner Anil Kumble, whose jaw was fractured in the fourth test in West Indies, is likely to be operated immediately on his arrival here tomorrow.

Kumble, who was hit in the jaw by a delivery from M Dillon on the second day’s play at St Johns in Antigua, is expected to arrive here tomorrow by taking a connecting flight from Mumbai, family sources told UNI. They indicated that Kumble may be operated tomorrow.

Kumble bowled 14 overs with a bandaged jaw on May 12 and claimed the prize wicket of Brian Lara. (UNI)

4 changes likely for one-day squad

MUMBAI, May 14: Dashing Delhi batsman Virendra Sehwag who missed the ongoing test series in West Indies due to a shoulder injury, is expected to return to the national team for the five-match one-day series starting in the Caribbean on May 25.

In the team which is expected to see four changes from the test squad, Sehwag, along with Mumbai paceman Ajit Agarkar, Punjab batsman Yuvraj Singh and Uttar Pradesh middle order batsman Mohammed Kaif is almost certain to get the selectors’ nod when the five-member panel under the chairmanship of Chandu Borde, meets here tomorrow, according to a Cricket Board source here today.

The players likely to return after the fifth test in Jamaica are Deepdas Gupta, Shiv Sunder Das, Tinu Yohanan and Wasim Jaffer or Sanjay Bhngar, the source added.

If the team management opts for an allrounder then Sanjay Bangar would stay on but with Wasim Jaffer in fine form it may prefer the Mumbai opener, the source added.

Both off-spinners Harbhajan Singh and Sarandeep Singh are likely to stay on as leg-spinner Anil Kumble, who fractured his jaw while batting in india’s first innings of the fourth test at Antigua, is already on his way back home.

The Indians will play the first two one-dayers at Sabina Park, Jamaica on May 25 and 26, the third at Kensington Oval, Barbados on May 29 and the last two at Queen’s Park Oval, trinidad on June 12 and 2 before flying back home on June 3. (PTI)

Australian cricket stars don’t want to tour Pak

SYDNEY, May 14: Amid reports that the search is on for alternative venues for the Australia-Pakistan series, leading Australian cricketers today said they won’t travel to Pakistan in September even if the Australian Cricket Board (ACB) goes ahead with the trip.

"They (ACB) have got to send players over there who want to go. If the players don’t want to go, there’s not much point in sending a team," test Captain Steve Waugh told Australian Associated Press from Monte Carlo, where Waugh along with Shane Warne, Ricky Ponting and Glenn McGrath will receive the world team of the year award at the Laureus World Sports Awards Function.

"It’s pretty hard to give in to terrorism. You look at it from both sides. One side you go for the good of cricket and not giving into terrorism and on the other side is that it may be dangerous and you’re putting yourself at risk.

"We want to go out there and play cricket but if you’re in danger, you’ve got to consider what the options are," Waugh said.

Champion leg spinner Shane Warne put safety and family before cricket and said "no" to touring Pakistan.

"If it was on in Pakistan I don’t think I would be going. For obvious reasons. There’s a war going on there, there was a bombing when New Zealanders were there. If it was tomorrow and we were going, I wouldn’t be going, no way. I don’t think anyone would hold it against people if they decided not to go to Pakistan," Waugh was quoted as saying.

Pace bowler McGrath, has been reportedly told by his wife that he won’t be going. "At the end of the day, we play cricket and we love what we do but to put your life on the line for a sport, is not what it’s all about," McGrath said.

"It’s a big decision especially when you’ve got kids involved. I’ve got three kids and there’s a lot more at stake when you’ve got family. It’s a pretty hostile place at the moment," Warne said.

The report further said all the four players were confident in leaving the matter with acb.

Keeping players’ safety in mind, ACB had recently cancelled the tour to Zimbabwe and had earlier forfeited the 1996 World Cup match in Sri Lanka. (PTI)

Warne says he will not tour Pakistan

MONACO, May 14: Shane Warne says he will not travel with the Australian cricket team if they choose to go ahead with a tour of Pakistan later this year, due to security fears.

"If the tour is on in Pakistan I don’t think I would be going...If it was tomorrow and we were going I wouldn’t be going, no way...I’ve got three kids and there is a lot more at stake when you’ve got a family," Warne told reporters at the Laureus Sports Awards.

Australia are due to visit Pakistan in September and October but are considering neutral venues for the series following abomb blast in Karachi last week which killed 14 people.

The New Zealand team were staying in a hotel close to the blast and immediately abandoned their tour.

"It’s a long way off and a lot can happen between now and then," said Captain Steve Waugh.

"You can see the tour taking place and also see what might happen. It’s about whether they (Pakistan officials) can guarantee protection for the players.

"The administrators and the Government have got to get together to try to find a solution. You want to go out there and play cricket but, if you’re in danger, you’ve got to consider what the options are. But the final decision rests with the Board.

"We all want to go there and play cricket. But what happened in Karachi happened pretty close to the New Zealand players and you could see how it affected them.

"Stephen Fleming (New Zealand captain) looked very badly affected by it. Nobody should be forced to go if they felt at risk.

"If the players don’t want to go then there is no point in sending a team," Waugh said.

The Australian cricket team are among the nominees for team of the year at the Laureus Awards on Tuesday. (AGENCIES)

Magnificent players do have lean times: Richards

ST JOHN’s (ANTIGUA), May 14: The West Indies batting great Sir Vivian Richards, says Indian maestro Sachin Tendulkar, currently going through a lean patch, is tentative in his approach and does not look settled in his mind.

"At the moment, he doesn’t quite look settled in his mind. If you are not going to be settled in your mind, the bat is not going to be settled in your hand," said Richards.

The Antiguan also feels that approaching milestones might be affecting Tendulkar’s form.

"He would have started realising by now he is closing in on Sunny Gavaskar and sometimes a lot of things start playing on your mind," said Richards as Tendulkar’s slump continued in the first innings of the fourth test here after he equalled Sir Donald Bradman’s record of 29 test hundreds in the second test at port of Spain.

Since then Tendulkar, with 7877 runs from 94 tests, has scores of 0, 0, 8 and 0 in his last four knocks after starting with 79 and 117 in the first two innings of the series. His last effort in the middle lasted just one ball when he edged a pedro collins delivery to wicket-keeper Ridley Jacobs on the opening day here on Friday.

But Richards was not ready to read too much into Tendulkar’s poor form saying that magnificent players do go through lean times.

"This is all part of life. He is such a magnificent player and magnificent players do go through lean times," Richards said.

"Sometimes a lot of things start playing on your mind and you are never quite relaxed than when you started," said Richards who scored 8540 runs in 121 tests at an average of 50.24 with 24 centuries.

"At times you never quite enjoy the game towards the later stages than when you first came in. When you are younger you are much more vibrant," Richards said.

Richards remembers the one who is considered the greatest batsman of all time - Sir Donald Bradman.

"I remember one time in Adelaide he came to our dressing room. I was impressed as an individual what he had achieved and having met him in person, I was even more impressed.

"He came in at the time when I was 60 not out at the end of day’s play. He came and just picked my jumbo (bat). He thought it was a little bit too heavy. He had never picked up such a bat in his life which weighed 2 pounds and 10 ounces," Richards said.

"He really was intrigued about a bat which was so heavy."

Richards whose own career was inspiring to many -including Tendulkar - because of his aggressive and inimitable style said his aggression was to make the spectators happy. (PTI)
