SRINAGAR, June 22: For all practical purposes, it is going to be the modern day coronation of the heir apparent. None in Dr Farooq Farooq Abdullah’s party, National Conference, (NC) has so far taken exception to the phrase. For Valley’s separatist circles, election of Omar Abdullah as the NC president is a non-event. The Hurriyat chairman Prof Abdul Gani’s quotable quote in recent past has been: ‘Sparrows, two or four, won’t bring spring to Kashmir’. Nonetheless, tomorrow’s event is going to be historical for a many reasons.It is being organised at a time when the militancy is at its lowest ebb and the whole Azadi camp is in disarray—courtesy September 11 and the subsequent world pressure on Pakistan. ....more
