Cabinet approves auto fuel policy NEW DELHI, Jan 8: Cabinet today approved the recommendations made by the experts committee on auto fuel policy which entails implementation of Bharat Stage II (Euro-II) vehicle emission norms in the country by April 1, 2005, a move that would involve an investment of Rs 17,000 crore by the oil industry. The cabinet also decided to authorise the concerned ministries/departments to take steps for implementation of recommendations made by the committee, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pramod Mahajan told reporters after the cabinet meeting here. The committee headed by Dr R A Mashelkar, Director General, Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, which submitted its report to Government on January 1, 2002, had recommended that Bharat Stage-II (Euro-II) norms, presently in force in four metros, be introduced in Bangalore, Hyderabad and Ahmedabad by end-2003 and the entire country from April 1, 2005, he said. Euro-III equivalent emission norms for all categories of vehicles (excluding two and three wheelers) should be introduced in Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkatta, Bangalore, Hyderabad and Ahmedabad from April 1, 2004 and extended to other parts of the country from 2010, Mahajan said. "The choice of fuel and vehicular technology would be left to the owners and operators of vehicles with Government prescribing only the vehicular standards," the Minister said.(PTI) |
Silver shoots up on stockists buying NEW DELHI, Jan 8: In an otherwises steady bullion market today, silver prices shot up on emergence of stockists buying influenced by higher overseas advises and closed with handsome gains. Prices of gold and silver coins continued to be asked at previous levels in restricted deals. Marketmen said hectic buying by stockists in silver mainly pushed up the prices to recent higher levels. They said reports of a steep hike in silver prices in the international markets pushed up the prices. Silver in other asian markets was quoted higher at 4.75 us dollar an ounce. Gold prices remained steady following a similiar trend in overseas markets where it was set around 278 us dollar like it did in London last night. Silver ready shot up by Rs.65 at Rs.7685 per kilo and weekly-based delivery by a same margin at Rs.7675 per kilo. Silver coins were unchanged at Rs.11,500/11,600 per 100 piecs. Standard gold and ornaments were continued to be asked at last levels of Rs.4640 and Rs.4490 per ten gram respectively. Sovereign was also unchanged at Rs.3800 per piece of eight gram in limited deals. The following were todays quotations: silver ready 7685 and delivery 7675. India earns Rs 50 cr from milk productions CHAPRA, Jan 8: India earns foreign exchange worth Rs 50 crore from milk production, which has reached 85 million tonne compared to 17 million tonne during the fifties, according to Bihar Assembly Speaker Sada Nand Singh. Laying the foundation stone of the Rs 67 lakh milk chilling plant at Chapra Sadar block yesterday, Mr Singh urged the youth to invest in the milk business and advocated for establishing chilling plants in villages also for self-reliance. The Speaker said fruit and vegetable-based industries should also be promoted. He stressed upon the need for restarting the closed sugar and jute mills and urged the Government to work in this direction. He lamented that fund on plannings in Bihar was meager compared to other states and the centre should follow a uniform policy. Stress on agriculture and agriculture-based industries could help put the state on the path of development, he said adding that politicians and social workers must come forward with development-oriented approach by rising above politics. He said criminalisation of politics must be stopped and every party was positively thinking in this direction. District Magistrate Pankaj Kumar assured the completion of the plant within 120 days. PC sales hit by economic slowdown NEW DELHI, Jan 8: Hit hard by the current economic slowdown, Personal Computer sales declined by four per cent during the first half of the current fiscal at 8.03 lakh, according to a performance review for the period by Manufacturers Association of Information Technology (MAIT). The Association has also revised sales projection for 2001-2002 to 1.65 million units from 2.45 million units. Personal computer sales had registered a growth of 34 per cent in 2000-2001 over 1999-2000. During the first half of this fiscal, lesser known regional brands and unbranded systems accounted for 44 per cent of PC sales, while MNC brands maintained a robust performance with a market share of 36 per cent and Indian brands accounted for 20 per cent of the market. Both Indian and MNC brands posted an increase in their market share during the period over the corresponding period in the previous year, the review showed. (PTI) |
Last date for filing Income Tax extended to March 31 NEW DELHI, Jan 8: Government today extended the last day for filing Income Tax under the "one-by-six" scheme to March 31, 2002 from the previous last date of November 30, 2001. The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) said that many people, especially in the new urban centres, did not file their return of income under the one-by-six scheme by November 30 due to lack of awareness, despite having legal liability to do so. "If the return under the scheme is filed by March 2002 voluntarily, no penalty will be imposed. The section 271f of the Income Tax act provides for imposition of a penalty of Rs 5,000 for failure to file tax returns in time," CBDT said in a statement here. CBDT extended the date in order to mitigate the hardships caused due to large number of persons who failed to file the Income Tax return by November 2001. CDBT extended the one-by-six scheme to 4989 urban centres this fiscal as against only 133 centres last fiscal. (PTI) |

NEW DELHI, Jan 8: The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) today extended the date of filing the return of income under one-by-six scheme by March two, 2002. The last date for filing of the returns under the scheme was November 30, 2001. A Finance Ministry release stated that the department had extended the operation of the scheme to 4989 new urban centres in the current assessment year as against 133 centres to which the scheme was applicable till last year. Many people, especially in the new urban centres, did not file their returns due to lack of awareness, despite having a legal liability to do so. The Income Tax Act provides for an imposition of a penalty of Rs five thousand for failure to file the return in time. The CDBT order under section 119(1) of the Income Tax Act has been issued to mitigate the hardships which will be caused to the large number of people who failed to file the return by November 30, 2001, the release added.
