Will J&K Board authorities clarify?

Sir,

Some kind of confusion has been created that GCD/LCD, Ratio Proportion, and cyclic factorisation stand included in syllabus of Mathematics for students of class Xth, the students who are to appear in the ensuing annual exam. session 2002. Side by side the teachers seem to have been caught unwares and no body is sure whether these areas as mentioned are to be transacted in the ongoing classes of the said examination. The text book prescribed mentions GCD/LCD and also factorisation but with no particular reference to cyclic factorisation. There is no mention of Ratio and proportion. There is no supplement available with the clear directions that these areas are meant to be taken up. There is no information communicated by J&K Board Office to confirm the inclusion of these areas. Somebody, somewhere said that the clarifications could be had from the Board office, but it is not confirmed. A contact with the examination Unit also has failed to confirm the inclusion or otherwise of these units.
The students have become panicky and are not satisfied as to what is to be done. In some schools, as gathered, these areas remain untouched. But, through some sources, though not authentic, it is said that teachers have either taken up these chapters, or these are likely to be covered. It is confusion worse confounded. Still there is time for these units to be covered but the question is whether units are to be treated as relevant parts for the coming examination. The text book prescribed, to repeat, mentions GCD/LCD but regarding the other two areas, confusion exists and is likely to continue until a clarification is communicated. Under these circumstances, when the Board authorities are requested to notify as to what the actual position is, as otherwise it will linger on as a muddle and will amount to injustice.

Gender discrimination

Sir,

Though we have entered into the 21st Century just an year back and may claim big achievements in different spheres, some of social evils of serious nature are still prevalent in our country. One of such evils is that of growing discrimination against the girl child. People have a common belief of treating the girl child as secondary member to that of her male counterpart. The boy has access to all comforts and other facilities of life such as education, medical aid and better share of food while the needs of the girl are ignored. Analytically, the low and declining sex ration of male, female are the result of the prevailing gender discrimination. In middle and lower class families girl is considered as a transitional member of the family who is to disposed off with huge dowry. Some people even claim that the cost of nurturing a girl is much more as compared to a boy due to growing dowry system in the society.
The discrimination against the girls include foeticide malnutrition, incidents of rape stripping, acid throwing, burning for want of more dowry molestation sex abuse, sexual harassment at the places of work etc. The worst part is that discrimination begins even prior to her birth due to the foeticide in some parts of our country. The worst offence of a female foeticide is of ruthless and brutal kind. So much so girls is 'not safe' even in her Mother's Womb. The ill practice of female infanticide is prevalent in few communities in some parts of our country such as parts of Salim District Tamil Nadu, Sitamarhi, Bhagal Pur and Purnea districts of Bihar and in some parts of Orissa, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh. Another worst offence to a girl's fundamental right to live with dignity is that of stripping and rape which often drags her to commit suicide. The incidents of dowry deaths are also on a rise during recent years. The most wide spread discrimination against the girls is domestic violence. As per reliable sources, about one million girls between the age group of 6 to 18 are engaged as maid servants in our country. There are many case of sexual harassment of such maid servants by their employers at the places of their work. As a matter of fact the stripping and acid throwing are the most easiest and effective ways of making silent the victims who protest against sexual harassment.
To curb the growing menace of discrimination against the girls of various kinds as discussed I would like to lay emphasis on the following:-
Every girls must get education which will create awareness about her rights and laws to fight against various kinds of discrimination against them.
There should be a complete ban on pre-natal Diagnostic technique (PNDT) to determine the sex of the foetus. The Govt. has recently directed all State Govts. to register sonography machines and to capture the unauthorised/unregistered ones. This will help curbing the rampantly going on sex determination tests.
In some states, the Government had considered and felt the necessity of deploying women police officials in police stations. It will help dealing with cases of harassment against the women without any biased manner.

A lesson for politicians

Sir,

This has reference to the article "Verdict of Urban Voter" published in the Sunday Magazine of the Daily Excelsior .
The comments made by the citizens of Jammu regarding low turn of voters during election has been corroborated by the low percentage of votes cast in the city. It was below 40 percent at various places like Gandhi Nagar etc. This indicates clearly that the urban votes have got disenchanted with the politics and politician not only in Jammu city but at other urban places as well. This is time politicians wake from the slumber and see what harm they have done to the system, how they have robbed the system of its power and dignity. The day is not far away, if the situation does not improve, when people even in rural areas will stop exercising their right to franchise.
Politicians have to revive the system by solving people's problems. They will have to come forward to listen to woes of poor and neglected To provide medicare and basic facilities for people to live with dignity.
They have to convass from door to door to seek a poor man's vote and reassure him that he will be looked after.
By promising moon, he can no longer play with the sentiments of the people. No body loves politician now-a-days as people feel that they are corrupt and morally degraded. They care for their kith and kin but not the people who elected them.
