Australia poised for eighth successive Ashes triumph

PERTH, Nov 30: Australia are poised to wrap up the Ashes series against England after dominating the second day of the third test in the five-match series here today.

The Australian batsmen flayed England’s depleted attack in making a first innings total of 456, 271 ahead of the visitors’ paltry 185.

Then Australia snapped up opener Marcus Trescothick (four) as England lurched to 33 for one wicket at stumps, leaving them needing another 238 runs to make the home team bat again.

Trescothick fell to demon paceman Brett Lee, England’s first-innings tormentor.

Together at the end of another traumatic day for Nasser Hussain’s side were Michael Vaughan and nightwatchman Richard Dawson, who each have eight runs.

The only England player to emerge from the day with a full measure of credit was persistent medium-pacer Craig White, who toiled for 23.1 overs in warm conditions to snatch five for 127 - his second five-wicket haul in test ranks and first against Australia.

As England laboured without paceman Chris Silverwood - sidelined from the match with an ankle injury - and two more catches were squandered, all of the Australian batsmen contributed to their team’s formidable score.

Home town hero Damien Martyn led the way, fashioning a cultured 71, a three-and-a-half-hour knock embellished with 13 sweet boundaries.

Martyn, a stylish right-hander enjoying his most successful patch in international company, would have been annoyed to flick a catch to Gloveman Alec Stewart when only 29 runs short of his sixth test century and his third against England.

Number three Ricky Ponting, who resumed with 43, completed an exciting 68 (10 fours, one six) before playing onto his stumps a delivery from white early in the day.

Left-hander Darren Lehmann, striving to establish a secure place in the side, began like a Tornado, clubbing seven fours and a six.

But over-exuberance cost him his wicket when he had rattled up 42 from 61 balls.

He fell to the last ball before lunch, hooking a short one from white to Steve Harmison at fine leg.

Skipper Steve Waugh, who was troubled overnight with an upset stomach, seldom looked completely comfortable as he put together 53 in just over two hours, but there were several convincing drives among his 10 boundaries.

Left-hander Adam Gilchrist pounded a scintillating 38 (seven fours, one six) from 28 balls before being dismissed in dramatic circumstances.

He hooked a ball from white to fine leg, where Alex Tudor gathered a fine catch, apparently just inside the boundary.

Gilchrist began to walk off, but after strolling about 15 metres returned when he looked up at the big screen and saw a replay suggesting tudor could have stepped on or over the boundary rope while taking the catch.

An Australian Cricket Board official confirmed later umpire Rudi Koertzen had told Gilchrist to remain on the field while TV umpire Daryl Harper studied TV footage.

Harper was satisfied the catch was taken within the field of play, and Koertzen and co-umpire Steve Bucknor ruled Gilchrist was out.

Tail-enders Lee (41), Shane Warne (35) and Jason Gillespie (27) added to England’s misery with lively hitting at the end of the innings. (AFP)

IOC puts off decision on deleting sports until after 2004

MEXICO,(City), Nov 30: Baseball, Softball and modern pentathlon are staying in the Olympics - for now at least.

Three months after an Olympic panel proposed the three sports be dropped starting with the 2008 Beijing Games, the IoC decided yesterday to keep them in for the time being.

The delegates voted to postpone any removal of sports until after a full review of the programme following the 2004 Athens Olympics.

The decision appears to mean the sports are safe through the Beijing Games. It also would rule out the chances of Golf or seven-a-side Rugby be added to the Beijing Games, as had been proposed.

The two-year postponement was a defeat for International Olympic Committee president Jacques Rogge, who had commissioned the proposed changes and pushed for a vote this week.

After 10-minute presentations to the Assembly by leaders of the three endangered sports, dozens of rank-and-file IOC members took the floor to question the whole process and push for a postponement.

Of the 39 speakers, not a single one spoke in favour of the proposals to cut the sports.

"It is urgent to wait," said Senegalese member Youssoupha Ndiaye in a statement that summed up much of the 2 1/2-hour debate.

Rogge then conferred with his executive board and submitted a proposal to put off any deletion of sports until after Athens. (AP)

India have the ammunition to win World Cup: Kapil

MUMBAI, Nov 30: Former Indian captain Kapil Dev today said here that the Indian cricket team has the ammunition to win the forthcoming World Cup in South Africa next year.

Speaking to reporters after playing "gully cricket" with Bengal Club under-15 cricketers at Shivaji Park here, Wisden’s Indian cricketer of the century award winner said "my advice to the Indian team would be `just go and win the World Cup’ as they have the talent and confidence to do so."

"It is a very good team. They have the ammunition and all they have to do is to believe in themselves and perform to their full potential to win the cup," he added.

Kapil, who led India to its first ever World Cup win in 1983, said his mantra to success in cricket was "application, concentration and determination" and added that "if you can do these three to perfection then there is no reason not to come up as a cricketer."

Speaking about the secret of his fitness, he said "it is the key to sportsmen’s success."

"It is essential for a fast bowler to work hard in his younger days to have an injury free career. I have worked hard during my younger days and that is why I am fit even today."

"Even now I avoid fats and oily food and consume lots of vegetables and fruits and play gully cricket with youngsters to keep myself fit," Kapil Dev said. (PTI)

Cairns ruled out of first India Test

AUCKLAND, Nov 30: New Zealand all-rounder Chris Cairns has ruled himself out of the opening test against India starting in Wellington on December 12, it was announced today.

Cairns, who underwent his second serious knee operation in march, was back playing a first class championship match for Canterbury against Otago yesterday but only bowled five overs without success.

The medium-fast bowler and attacking batsman had earlier informed the chairman of selectors, Sir Richard Hadlee, that he was doubtful for the full two-match test series against India, and was targeting the one-day series which begins in Auckland on December 26.

"He has subsequently informed me that he will reassess his condition in time for consideration for the second test in Hamilton (December 19).

"Chris doesn’t want to rush his comeback like he did this time last year from another knee operation," Hadlee told Wellington’s dominion-post newspaper.

"The first priority has to be the World Cup in February and Narch, because Chris is so vital to our chances of winning there."

Also out of the running for first test selection is Auckland all-rounder Andre Adams, who is returning from a back injury sustained earlier this year after bursting on to the test and one-day scene in Australia.

Adams is sitting out Auckland’s opening four day championship match against Northern districts because of a ban imposed by his association for a misdemeanour committed in a club match last weekend.

Hadlee said Adams would be unable to increase his bowling workload sufficiently to be in contention for the test side, which will be named on December 8. (AGENCIES)
