India stands the risk of being isolated: Dalmiya

KOLKATA, Aug 25: Cricket board president Jagmohan Dalmiya today said India now stood the risk of being ‘isolated’ from the cricketing world with the country’s top stars persistently refusing to sign the agreement for the next month’s Champion’s Trophy in Sri Lanka.

"With all other teams either signing or on the verge of doing so, India, I fear may be somewhat isolated," Dalmiya told PTI here.

New Zealand and Pakistan teams and some of the Zimbabwe players have already signed the participation contract. Players of Australia, England, Sri Lanka and South Africa, who had initially opposed the contract, have also now agreed to sign subject to certain conditions.

Dalmiya, however, said the board was still open to discussion with the players and hoped that the cricketers would reconsider their stand.

He said BCCI would resume formal discussion with the players after the Leeds test was over. "The players are now in the midst of a vital match. They need to stay focussed. So we can restart negotiation after the match," he said. (PTI)

Pak-Australia test from Oct 3

ISLAMABAD, Aug 25: The first match of the Pakistan-Australia three test series will start from October 3 in Colombo and will then proceed to Sharjah for the next two, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has said.

The first test will be played in Colombo from October 3 to 7, a day before the earlier announced date of October 4, but whether the match will be played at the Sinhala Sports Club or Premadasa Stadium will be announced after further consultations with the Board of Control for Cricket in Sri Lanka, the pcb said yesterday.

The remaining two tests will be played in Sharjah. The second from October 11-15 and the third from October 19-23.

The pcb was forced to shift the series to neutral venues after the Aussies decided not to tour Pakistan citing security concerns inspite of assurances of player safety at the highest governmental level.

Pakistan cricket has, over the year, been constantly plagued by the problem of tour cancellations and playing at neutral venues, a move that has adversely affected the PCB’s coffers.

The Pakistanis first played the Windies at Sharjah in February in a three test series. Then New Zealand cut short its tour of Pakistan in may when a bomb attack outside its hotel in Karachi killed 14 people.

Pakistan’s plans of playing the Aussies in Sri Lanka was also initially put in a jeopardy due to an ICC rule that no international match could be held at the same venue within seven days of hosting an ICC Tournament.

But the ICC, whose biennial Champions Trophy will be held in Sri Lanka from September 12 to 30, waived the rule to allow the PCB to breathe easy. (UNI)

Indian players should play in the Champions Trophy: Kapil

KANPUR, Aug 25: Wisden Indian cricketer of the century and former Indian skipper Kapil Dev today advised the Indian team to participate unconditionally in the ICC Champions Trophy Cricket Tournament for the sake of the nation.

Talkingto reporters here, Kapil said that playing for the country should be the guiding factor for cricketers. "In the presence of this spirit, every other thing automatically gets pushed in the background and what is left for the player is his sentiment to play for the nation and not for his personal gains," the star of yesteryears said.

Hence, he said, the players should make themselves unconditionally available for the Champions Trophy without making an issue out of the ICC contract, Kapil suggested.

However, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) should also try and find out an amicable solution to the problem.

The sending of an alternative ‘B’ team to the prestigious tournament was no solution, he said adding, attempts should be made for a direct dialogue between the players and the board facilitating the regular team’s participatation in the event. Kapil advocated the proposed move by players to float their own association saying he perceived no harm to cricket through it. "Everybody enjoys the right to form such Associations and express him or herself," he said.

———————-

Emphasising the need for improvement in every quarter of the game, he asserted it is the bcci which is supposed to take measures to raise the level of cricket in the country.

However, he said he might be available for counselling if the same was sought by the BCCI.

About the lack of pace bowlers in the country especially in comparison to Pakistan, Kapil said. "Everything is not available everywhere."

While Pakistan has cultivated pace bowlers like Waqar Yunus and Shoaib Akhtar, India has star batsmen like Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid.

Nevertheless, more efforts to cultivate pace bowlers in the country should be made without entering into comparisons with other countries, he added.

Kapil Dev, the brand Ambassador for set Max, came here today for the channel’s ongoing countrywide ‘Gali Cricket Programme’. He gave tips to budding cricketers at the Kamla Club, Palika Stadium and Jajmau under the channel’s programme. (UNI)

PM’s intervention sought on cricket sponsorship issue

NEW DELHI, Aug 25: Member of Parliament and vice president of Indian Olympic Association (IOA) F M Khan has sought the Prime Minister’s intervention to resolve the sponsorship imbroglio between the Indian cricketers and International Cricket Council.

In a letter to Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Khan sought his intervention on the issue to "prevent a catastrophe affecting our national prestige and the feelings of millions of ordinary citizens".

In the absence of a solution to the sponsorship issue, top Indian cricketers like skipper Sourav Ganguly, Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid have threatened to stay away from next month’s ICC Champions Trophy in Sri Lanka.

"The ICC, in signing the contract with its sponsors, has signed away the rights of individual players ... The players should not be made a scapegoat for the commercial interests of ICC and BCCI which are two of the richest sports organisations in the world," Khan said in the letter.

Khan said players are "free enterprises" and must be entitled to market themselves as long as such activities do not affect their game.

He the Prime Minister to ensure that the ICC and BCCI modify their sponsorship rules so that top players of the country do not stay away from the Champions Trophy. (UNI)

Hussain, Stewart block India’s victory parade

LEEDS (England), Aug 25: India were facing a late resistance in their victory march in the third test as England reached 239 for four in their second innings on the fourth day here today after being forced to follow-on.

England skipper Nasser Hussain and veteran wicketkeeper batsman Alec Stewart were fighting a grim battle for survival in a fruitful fifth wicket partnership with the home team still 116 runs behind India’s first innings score of 628 for eight declared.

Hussain was batting on 90 and stewart on 40 at the close of day’s play, the duo having put on 91 runs for the fifth wicket so far. England had earlier been bowled out for 273 in their first innings with Stewart remaining unbeaten on 78.

It was a good day for the Indian bowlers who maintained a very tight line and length and forced the englishmen to commit mistakes. Ajit Agarkar and Anil Kumble, who claimed one wicket each, were particularly impressive and had the batsmen in all kinds of trouble.

But it was the unheralded Sanjay Bangar who picked two quick wickets with his gentle seam bowling and raised hopes of an innings victory for India.

When Stewart walked in to bat, England were 148 for four. With a combination of attack and defence, Hussain and Stewart managed to survive till the end and also kept accumulating the runs.

England had a poor start to their second innings with their most dependable batsman in this series Michael Vaughan returning to the pavilion after scoring just 15 runs. Vaughan was trapped Leg Before Wicket with a sharp incoming delivery from Agarkar in the 10th over of the innings when England’s total was 28.

Agarkar surprised with his consistent line and length today. He kept probing the off-side area and repeatedly got past the edge of the bat.

Opener Robert Key and Mark Butcher had a small partnership going for the second wicket before Kumble effected the breakthrough for India. Key also fell leg before wicket for 34 after adding 48 runs with Butcher.

Runs came in a trickle for England as Kumble and Harbhajan Singh made life difficult for the batsmen. With the pitch offering inconsistent bounce, both these spinners created a lot of problems and the Englishmen could hardly read them.

Just when England were looking to build another partnership, Bangar struck twice to send back Butcher and Crawley. Both the batsmen were guilty of going for ambitious shots when there was no need for it.

Butcher, who made 42 with six boundaries, played away from his body trying to go for an off-drive but only managed an edge that flew to Rahul Dravid at slips. Crawley (12) joined him in the dressing room soon after hitting straight into the hands of Virender Sehwag at covers.

But Hussain and Stewart denied the Indians any more success and kept alive the hopes of securing a draw.

Both the batsmen played very positively before tea when they took on the Indian spinners in a bid to release the pressure. Hussain was particularly aggressive as he cut and pulled with vengeance and even stepped out to loft Harbhajan Singh for a six over long-on.

Stewart continued from where he left off in the first innings and played a flawless knock. At tea, England were 166 for four with Hussain batting on 47 and Stewart on 12.

The going once again became difficult for England in the final session of play when Hussain was made to struggle by the spinners. Kumble and Harbhajan Singh managed to do everything but dismiss the English captain who held on to his wicket stubbornly.

Hussain got a reprieve on 86 when a confident Leg Before Wicket appeal against Kumble was turned down by umpire Dave Orchard of South Africa. The batsman looked out but was given the benefit of doubt.

The Indian pacemen were taken for some runs towards the end of the day’s play and even the new ball, which was taken after 82 overs, could not bring India any good fortune.

Earlier, England’s first innings came to an end in the fourth over of the day when Kumble had Matthew Hoggard caught by Sehwag at forward short leg. England, who resumed at their overnight 264 for nine, could add just nine runs this morning with Stewart left stranded at 78. (PTI)
