Cup Cricket Tournament MCC beats Kala XI by 28 runs.... Under-19 Atman Club |
Samsung says it supports Indian players NEW DELHI, Aug 19: Electronic major Samsung, which has signed up seven top Indian cricketers, six of them members of the current national squad, to endorse its products, today came out in suppport of the players in the sponsorship row with the International Cricket Council. "Whatever the outcome of the current negotiations between the players, the Indian cricket board and ICC, we are committed to stand solidly with the players," Samsung Indias vice-president Ravindra Zutshi said today. Addressing a press conference here to mark the launch of a massive campaign on TV channels of Samsungs promotion of cricket, Zutshi expressed the hope that during negotiations with ICC, "BCCI will work out something in favour of itself and the players". He clarified that the players - Rahul Dravid, Anil Kumble, Harbhajan Singh, Virender Sehwag, Dinesh Mongia, Ajay Ratra and Javagal Srinath - were signed up as long ago as March this year and the launch of the campaign was set to concincide with the beginning of cricket season in India. "You will understand that a project like this takes a long time to conceptualise, discuss and negotiate before it fructifies," Zutshi said and added that it was not like his company had thought it up only a few days ago. Asked why Srinath, who has announced his retirement from test cricket, was selected, Zutshi said there was always the possibility of the speedster returning to the national team for the one-day internationals, thereby implying that he was one of the probables for the World Cup. He said ambush marketing was a fact of life with all major international events, the latest example being the recent soccer World Cup in South Korea and Japan, and sports bodies would have to work out a solution to this problem. Asked what his companys stand would be if the current negotiations regarding the ICC Champions Trophy went against their interests, Zutshi said there were still so many other events like the West Indies coming to India later this year and the Indian team going to New Zealand before going to South Africa for the World Cup next year. Samsung, which is also sponsoring the Indian squad for the Asian Games in Busan (South Korea) next month and the Olympic Games in Athens in 2004, has earmarked a total budget of Rs 35 crore for its involvement with Indian sports this year, Zutshi said. "Our promotion of sports in India is not confined to cricket alone. We have sponsored the Indian contingents for the 1998 Bangkok Asian Games and the 2000 Sydney Olympics. We have a strong relationship with the Indian Olympic Association too. "It is only that cricket is a passion in this country and naturally it takes the cake," Zutshi added. (PTI) |
BCCI working committee, selectors meet today BANGALORE, Aug 19: An emergent meeting of the selection committee of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), will be held here tomorrow to finalise the Indian team for the ICC Champions Trophy starting in Sri Lanka on September 12. Consequent to the meeting, the working committee, earlier scheduled for August 21, would be held tomorrow ahead of the selection committee meeting. The two meetings would discuss issues relating to the ongoing sponsorship controversy. Board president Jagmohan Dalmiya, who had been constantly in touch with the Indian players in London, had suggested the players to toe the International Cricket Council line for the Champions Trophy alone. The senior players have reportedly asked for more time to arrive at a decision. So, the Board had as a precautionary measure decided to call the selectors to finalise the team which might not include players like Sachin Tendulkar, Saurav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid. The board had already decided to forgo the teams official sponsors Saharas logo for the Champions Trophy. Board secreatary Niranjan Shah had already stated that the BCCI had committed to send a team to Sri Lanka, which it had to honour. (UNI) |
Anand emerges victorious at Mainz Chess Classics MAINZ, Aug 19: Viswanathan Anand lived upto his reputation as the worlds best rapid chess player with an outright victory against world champion Ruslan Ponomariov of Ukraine in the Mainz Chess Classics here. Anand won the last of the eight-game series to emerge victorious by 4.5-3.5 points. It was a remarkable recovery by Anand who had lost to Ponomariov in the third game on the first day of the three-day match event. For the Ukrainian it turned out to be a rather confidence shattering experience and he must be cursing himself for missing out after taking an early lead on day one. The players who were level at 3-3 after the sixth game, drew their seventh game. Playing white in the last game yesterday, Anand shifted from his usual king pawn to the queen pawn and faced the queens gambit accepted by Ponomariov. The opening choice by Ponomariov surprised many as Anand himself is an exponent of the variation having fought many a keen theoretical battle against the likes of Vladimir Kramnik. Anand maintained a miniscule advantage as the game entered the middlegame phase and exerted pressure on the weak black kingside with a finely crafted knight manoeuvre. The Ukrainian found some solace in exchanging the rooks but failed to find the best defensive moves as Anand got in to the demolition act on the kingside. It was a brilliant piece sacrifice by Anand on the 26th move that ripped open blacks kingside. Anand got only two pawns for the pieces but the irrepairable weaknesses that he left in Ponomariovs position soon had a telling effect as the remaining black pawns fell like nine pins. Holding on to his own, anand picked up one pawn after another and soon Ponomariov was stripped off of his pawns on both flanks. After the exchange of the last minor piece on the 42nd move it was a picturesque sight as Anand had five pawns and queen against queen and knight. Ponomariov fought in vain for four more moves before resigning. Earlier the final day started with honours shared after the first six rounds. Ponomariov, white, faced the Sicilian Paulsen by Anand that converted to the Taimanov variation. Ponomariov maintained some pressure in the resulting middlegame but Anand gave an excellent display of defensive chess to hold his front. The pieces got exchanged at regular intervals and though Anand was saddled with a backward pawn on the queen file, his pieces came to the rescue act as and when Ponomariov attacked it. The Ukrainian finally successfully opened the kingside but Anand sacrificed a pawn to force the game in to a rooks and pawns endgame that was just level. In a last ditch attempt, Ponomariov traded the rooks also but the ensuing king and pawns position was not sufficient for a win despite the extra pawn for the first player. The draw was agreed to after 81 moves. (PTI) |
Indians refuse to accept ICCs terms LEEDS (England), Aug 19: The Indian cricketers tonight rejected International Cricket Councils terms for participating in major international tournaments, putting in jeopardy Indias participation in next months Mini World Cup in Sri Lanka. In a letter to the Indian cricket board, the players said, "we believe by signing the player contract, we are caught totally in the middle". "On the one hand, we suffer exposure from the ICC/BCCI when they could allege non-compliance with our obligations. On the other hand, we could face exposure from our competitive sponsors who have paid us for the right to exploit our brand and image commercially," the players said. "We have been told that unless we sign a document which forces us to relinquish all our intellectual property and personal commercial rights, we would be ineligible to play for our country in tournaments conducted by the International Cricket Council. "We are put in a peculiar situation where we are not boycotting the ICC run tournaments but the ICC is boycotting us," the players said. The players also rejected BCCIs proposal to sign the agreement only for the Champions Trophy after which it promised to take up the matter with ICC. "The ICC restrictions are overly broad, covering not just the Champions Trophy but thirty days before and after. In the present case, therefore, by simply signing the contract, the ICC could already allege breach," the players said, Pointing out that less than one month remained for the start of Champions Trophy. "We want to play. We are not asking for anything more than that we have been getting. We are just not being allowed to play much against our wishes," they said. (PTI) |
