Foreign coaches

Sir,

This has reference to 'Foreign Coaches, local players' DE April 11, 2002.

Well knowledgeable in Sports sphere Mr. Rajesh Dhar in his constructive critical write up ''Foreign Coaches, local Players "DE April 11, 2002 has rightly diagnosed the disease which the Indian cricket has developed seriously and has rightly tried to explore its therapy. The real tragedy with Indians as a whole and the active cricket playing members in particular is that we lack dedication, self confidence, determination and will power to win the game. Not to speak of the spirit of winning the game we have even forgotten the panacea proverb, "Play the game and play it well". Surely Mr. Rajesh Dhar is on the right track when he says that fitness is from within.

Many a time when we watch the unfortunate live telecast of the matches it seems that Indian cricketers throw the games to their opponents. It is said that we should learn lessons from the past mistakes and from the promised enemies. Indian political game and its cricket wing have always shown indifference towards the art of learning and removing the flaws. I do not hesitate to name Pakistan which is our proved enemy alas, our theory of 'live and let live' has succumbed to Pak theory of ''Offence is the best defence". We should not feel ashamed of praising Pak players when the fight or play in the field especially with India.

Lastly, I am not in agreement with Mr. Rajesh Dhar's suggestion of appointing local coaches like Sunil Gavaskar. How far Sunil Gavaskar was committed to his individual records than the compacted team spirit to win is no way hidden to the learned author. At the same how the seeds of playing the game in a positive approach will be induced in the nerves of Indian players remains uncovered. I personally liked the continued sequence of the write ups of Mr. Dhar whose every sentence is filled with anger, anxiety, worry and outbursts which evinces his spirit of games, which definitely our cricketers, players lack.

Urdu in KAS examination

Sir,

It is most agonizing and astonishing that a candidate belonging to the State of Jammu and Kashmir, which has declared Urdu as its official language, is not alllowed to write in Urdu language the subjects he has opted for in the examination, inspite of the fact that the language is included in the Eighth Schedule of the Indian Constitution.

A candidate appearing in Indian Civil Services Examination held by Union Public Service Commission is allowed to write main part of the examination in any of the languages included in the English Schedule of the Indian Constitution, except one compulsory English paper of Matriculation standard. But our State has adopted a discriminatory pattern for State Civil Services Examination since its very inception. Here in addition to compulsory English paper a candidate is bound to write all other papers of the main examination, expect language papers, in English only that keeps of lot of talented Urdu knowing candidates hidden who otherwise can excel in the examination. Due to non proficiency in English they cannot exhibit their performance in a better way.

Therefore, we request the Chief Minister to make an early and necessary amendment in the existing rules of the State Civil Services Examination so that a candidate may become eligible to write the main part of recently notified examination in Urdu and all the other languages including in the Eighth Schedule of the Indian Constitution.
