Hooper, Chanderpaul frustrate India GEORGETOWN (Guyana), Apr 12: It was a dry morning session for India as their bowlers toiled hard without success and West Indies progressed towards a huge first innings total on the second day of the first cricket test here today. Shivnaraine Chanderpaul followed in the footsteps of his captain Carl Hooper in registering a fine century, the two batsmen taking their overnight total of 270 to 361 by lunch break. Chanderpaul, who resumed at 57, was unbeaten on 106 while Hooper, who had reached his century yesterday itself, was on 147, West Indies having added 91 runs in the 25 overs bowled today. Unlike yesterday, the Indians did not even had any chances today and were made to suffer at the hands of the two batsmen who scored easily. Chanderpaul and Hooper were slight circumspect in the initial overs of the morning when the ball was still new and Indian bowlers were generally accurate. Left-arm seamer Zaheer Khan bowled a much improved line today while Srinath too was impressive but they could hardly make any difference to the Indian fortunes. Both the batsmen looked to cut loose after the first half an hour when Chanderpaul hit Zaheer Khan for two fours in the days eighth over. Hooper followed suit in the next over, the first over of the day by Sanjay Bangar, and suddenly the runs started flowing for the home team. The Indians did not help their matters by setting unique field with just one man on the leg side for both the batsmen. It left very little margin of error for the fast bowlers and any deviation in line was promptly taken for runs. A rare opportunity came Indias way in the first over of Anil Kumble when Chanderpaul, then on 94, edged a faster one but V V S Laxman at first slip was a bit late to react and the ball ran to the third man fence. Chanderpaul brought up his third test century off the very next ball flicking Kumble off his toes for two runs. Hooper in the meanwhile showed some aggressive instincts and hit Bangar for two boundaries before pulling Sarandeep Singh for another. Chanderpauls 19th boundary brought up the 200-run partnership for the fifth wicket between the two batsmen. They have so far added 204 runs on the total of 157 yesterday. (PTI) |
Ding clinches title, Chandra takes 3rd place in Snooker KOLKATA, Apr 12: Chinas Junhui Ding gave ample display of his class to clinch the fourth Asian under-21 Snooker title while top seed Indian Manan Chandra had to be content with the third position here today. The 15-year-old Ding, who has produced some stunning snooker during the five-day prize money meet, sustained his form right through to script a convincing 6-2 victory over third seed Pramual Janthat of Thailand. Ding could not manage big breaks in the summit showdown but played a steady game to record a 70-33 71-10 78-28 89-12 37-74 55-66 75-46 61-20 victory. Manan Chandra, who crashed to ding in the semi-finals, had to be content with the third position with an easy victory over Malaysias Keem Ho Moh. Chandra, who was tipped to win the title, spanked the hapless moh with a 3-0 verdict in a one-sided contest. The Indian showed the form, which failed him in the semi-finals, to carve out a comfortable 88-0 60-26 66-43 victory giving very few opportunities to his rival. Chandra got into his groove from the very first frame as he brought off a break of 81 to take command. (PTI) |
