India collapse - yet again

DURBAN, Oct 26: India stumbled once again on a big occasion and were bowled out for 183 in 48.2 overs in the final of the Triangular one-day series against South Africa here today.

India, who have lost their last eight final matches, could never recover from the early dismissals of their openers, captain Sourav Ganguly and Sachin Tendulkar - two of their most successful batsmen in this series - and were made to work hard for every run after South African skipper Shaun Pollock won the toss and put the opposition in to bat.

The hosts went in with six fast bowlers in the match, leaving out left-arm spinner Nicky Boje from the squad, and bowled straight and tight, giving nothing away to the Indian batsmen. Their gameplan paid off and except for Rahul Dravid, who topscored with 77, none of the Indians could really stand up to the challenge.

After their world record opening wicket stand of 258 against Kenya in the last match, Ganguly and Tendulkar were dismissed for nine and 17 respectively - the first wicket falling only for 17 runs - which unfolded the familiar sordid saga of the Indian middle order.

Virender Sehwag raised India’s hopes for a while when he was associated in a 60-run third wicket stand with Dravid. But once he was gone, India seemed to have lost their spine and simply went through the motions.

The third wicket partnership came to an abrupt end when Sehwag casually steered Makhaya Ntini to third man fielder Hayward at the total 91 in the 26th over.

Reetinder Singh Sodhi (22 off 42 balls) then tried to salvage the Indian innings and shared a 22-run partnership with Dravid before he holed out to substitute fielder Andre Nel off paceman Mornantau Hayward who showed remarkable consistency in his bowling today.

Sodhi’s more experienced counterparts V V S Laxman and Yuveraj Singh showed less determination as they fell to expansive and irresponsible shots within a run of each other.

While Laxman (5), called as a reinforcement mid-way through the triseries, was caught by Ntini at mid-off off Lance Klusener, Yuveraj Singh (0), playing away from his body, gave away a regulation catch to first slip fielder Pollock.

It was Dravid who showed in his 102-ball 77-run knock that a mix of patience and aggression was required to tackle the South African pace battery. He hit six well struck fours including a fine leg glance off Ntini and a short-pulled boundary off Klusener in the 29th over.

Dravid, who got a life early on when he was dropped by Klusener at first slip off Ntini when on 31, reached his 50 off 76 balls with a boundary off Hayward.

Scoring mainly through singles, dravid failed to touch the 84-run mark he had set in 1997 at the same ground against South Africans when he perished trying to accelerate the run rate. He departed in the 47th over, caught by Pollock off Kemp.

Once Dravid, who had scored an equally determined 71 against the same rival at East London, was back in the pavilion, the tailenders disappointed as they were out in quick succession showing total lack of application.

The last three batsmen - Harbhajan Singh, Javagal Srinath and Anil Kumble were out on the same score - 183 - wasting 10 precious deliveries.

Harbhajan Singh (3) gave a simple catch to kemp off Pollock while Srinath (0) ran himself out rather nonchalantly. Kumble was also out to a regulation catch by Ntini off Kemp.

The Indian batting showed how much it depended on Ganguly and Tendulkar to deliver the goods as once they were out, the rest seemed to just cave in to the pressure.

Ganguly, in tremendous form on this entire tour, knew the stakes hinged heavily on his own individual performance.

However, after six overs of watchful defence, he decided he had been in the middle long enough to take on Pollock but only ended up nicking to wicketkeeper Mark Boucher.

Tendulkar, at the other end, had progressed to 17 off 41 balls when he attempted a steer off a super-fast delivery from Hayward to find the ball slamming on to his stumps.

In his short stay at the wicket, the maestro displayed brilliance in flashes, hitting three well-struck fours including an exquisite cover drive off Pollock and a wristy shot through the mid-wicket off Hayward.

For the South Africans, who were delighted to have restricted the visitors within a very manageable total, Kemp emerged as the most successful bowler scalping three wickets conceding 20 runs in 6.2 overs. (PTI)

India tour from next month
Eleven of 16-member England team confirm availability

LONDON, Oct 26: Eleven players of the 16-member England cricket team today confirmed their availability for the 40-day tour of India starting next month and the rest five have sought more time to take a decision.

Andy Caddick, Robert Croft, Marcus Trescothick, Ashley Giles and Craig White have sought more time.

"The ECB has accepted their request for extra time and the selectors will be having further discussions with these players over the course of this weekend," an official announcement by the board said today.

The ECB announced that 11 players - skipper Nasser Hussain, Usman Afzaal, Mark Butcher, Richard Dawson, James Foster, Warren Hegg, Mathew Hoggard, James Ormond, Mark Ramprakash, Graham Thorpe and Michael Vaughan - have confirmed their availability for the tour subject to the proviso that the team and the professional cricketers’ association are satisfied that appropriate security arrangements will be in place for the tour.

"In addition, all members of the management and support team have confirmed their availability to tour," the announcement said.

"The advice from foreign office is that it is safe to tour, still stands. We hope this won’t change. But if it does then we will act appropriately. We will be monitoring the security situation on a daily basis from now on until the tour ends just before Christmas," Tim Lamb, ECB CEO said.

"I am glad that no one has so far made themselves unavailable to go on the tour. We fully understand that this has been a difficult decision to make, and we accept that some players need a little more time to consider their positions," he said.

"But we do need to have definite decisions after this weekend in order to finalise the selection of the team and all detailed arrangements for the tour," Lamb added.

Paceman Caddick admitted he was faced with one of the most difficult situations ever. "This is one of the most difficult decisions I have ever had to make and I need to feel 100 per cent confident before myself and my family can take a decision," he said. "There are always risks in life, and I feel I need more time to consider."

Croft said, "I have a young family who are, without doubt, my first priority. In the current volatile situation I do not want to leave them to worry about my welfare, so I have requested more time."

Trescothick too was a bit jittery saying "as safety cannot be 100 per cent guaranteed, I feel that I require more time to consider my position and ensure that I am totally happy and in the right frame of mind".

To finalise security measures, John Carr, ECB director, cricket operations and senior representative of PCA, will travel to India prior to the tour. (PTI)
