Chamber appeals political parties to desist from hartal calls
Repeated bandhs badly affecting economy of Jammu: Sahai

Excelsior Correspondent

JAMMU, Oct 25: Expressing grave concern over repeated bandh calls given by the different out-fits, the Chamber of Commerce and Industries (CCI) today asked all political parties, social and religious organisations to desist from giving hartal calls.

Addressing a press conference, president of the Chamber of Commerce and Industries, Mr Ram Sahai said, "Jammu economy received a severe jolt by the recent firing incident at Jammu Railway Station resulting into a marked dip in the pilgrimage traffic to Jammu, thereby hitting the economy and trade and industries functioning".

"Militancy is a reason for affecting economy of the region but repeated bandh calls given by different organisations further deteriorate the conditions", he said, adding, "a single bandh has been costing a loss of approximately Rs 28.00 crore alone to the trade and industry".

"Aggrieved parties or persons have right to lodge their protest", he said and added that there was other ways like processions, protests, human chains, dharnas to lodge protest. He appealed to all organisations including political parties to desist from giving bandh call. "Bandh should be observed only as a last option as beside hitting the business hard it also vitiate law and order conditions resulting into uncertainties, rumours, suspicion and promote only cause of anti-national, anti-social elements", he said.

"It is my earnest appeal to the political parties to desist from bandh calls but in very emergent situations they should adopt other democratic means to redress their grievances", he said and added that there were so many means, other than bandh, to express resentment and anguish.

"We appeal to one and all to work for creating conditions congenial for carrying economic, trade and industry related activities and to create conditions of peace, which is vital for the development of Jammu", he said and added, "bandh, if required and justified be taken up in consultation with the Chamber, so that the same are enforced with all vigour and not partially as it so happens, so that the message that is wished to be conveyed to the Government is conveyed in letter and spirit and people’s cause turns triumphant".

Reacting to the bandh call given by some organisations on November 5 on the opening of the Secretariat in the winter capital, Mr Sahai stoutly opposed the proposed hartal call and appealed to the organisations to adopt other means of protest. "On-going holy Navratras have given a fillip to the trade related activities and the same are expected to further pick up in the ensuing festive season in the days to come", he said and appealed to the political parties not to give bandh call in the festive season.

Highlighting problems being faced by the traders in the region, Mr Sahai disclosed that Chamber will start an agitation very soon for uninterrupted power supply in the region. "We have been holding discussions with various social, political and religious organisations to chalk out a common strategy to launch agitation", he said.

He appealed to the Government to supply 24 hours power supply during festival season and take necessary steps to provide uninterrupted and quality power which is the responsibility of the Government.

Mr Sahai also appealed to the Government to immediately halt night cuts so that militants do not take advantage of the cover of darkness at night.

Regularisation of employees
Govt move unfinished agenda of ethnic cleansing: PK

Excelsior Correspondent

JAMMU, Oct 25; Political Affairs Committee of Panun Kashmir has assailed the State Government move to regularize the employees appointed in place of Kashmiri Pandit employees who are passing the days of exile outside the Valley.

Castigating the State Government for what he termed as the sinister move the Chairman of the committee, Dr K L Choudhary said that it was aimed at completing the "unfinished agenda" of of total ethnic cleansing of the Kashmiri Pandits from the Valley.

Dr Choudhary while equating the move with "state terrorism"said it is nothing short of that. He ridiculed the State Government for raising the bogey of honorable return and rehabilitation of Kashmiri Pandit community in the Valley.

He said the facts are totally otherwise and Government is engaged in making the return of the community impossible by blocking its economic links and snatching the jobs permanently.

He said it has become evident that the so called employment drive for migrants is not only a big hoax but a criminal joke being played by the State Government on the displaced community. This was an extreme case of violation perpetuated by an elected Government on its own citizens.

Dr Choudhary expressed these views while addressing the members of Committee which was held here today to discuss the implications of the setting up of four member Committee by the State Cabinet to regularize the employees appointed in place of displaced Kashmiri Pandit employees in the Valley. A PK release issued here today said.

It said addressing the meeting Dr Aghnishekhar, convenor PK warned the Government to withdraw the decision failing which the exiled community will be forced to take any extreme step. He said even the organization will knock the doors of state and Central Human Rights Commission.

He said there will be a massive agitation if the move was not at once stalled and appealed the community to be ready for any sacrifices to protect and preserve their interests and rights in their "Homeland".

Pak ruler is walking the tightrope

From B L Kak

NEW DELHI, Oct 25: Pakistan’s military ruler is in the news, mainly because he has never had it so bad. Clearly, Gen. Parvez Musharraf has been forced to back the United States against a friendly regime in Kabul. This apart, he has also to guard against rebellion in his own Government and the military and control rioters growing more violent by the hour in one Pakistani city after another.

He cannot deny yet another fact: He has been forced to take a U-turn over his Afghanistan policy. Indeed, he is now treading a path without much idea where it may lead. And yet, he is adroitly walking the tightrope.

In the first place, Gen. Musharraf made a stirring speech where he justified his support to the US-led bombing operation by distinguishing between the terrorism of Osama bin Laden and the plight of the Afghan people. Lest this be construed as capitulation, the military ruler deemed it necessary to take a few swipes at India .

And for added measure Gen. Musharraf included the mandatory references to the "freedom struggle in Kashmir". In the past, Gen. Musharraf deftly turned adversity to advantage, whether that was in getting better of India at Agra or in seizing his own opportunity in the crisis that developed post-September 11 for the United States.

This time his going is tough, not because he has chosen to simultaneously take on the influential lobby of clerics, sections of the army and the all-powerful ISI. For all this, there was really no option before him. There is no denying that any defiance of the US would have hurtled Pakistan towards economic bankruptcy, with the West imposing sanctions in addition to those already in place.

In that situation, the support of the Taliban and the jehadis would have been of no help. On the other hand, Gen. Musharraf’s co-option into the US war effort has won him handsome rewards in the form of a waived sanctions and economic assistance, the latest on that front being the European Union’s decision to sign a new cooperation treaty with Pakistan.

This notwithstanding, Gen. Musharraf is perturbed and assailed by a fear of something devastating for his stability as days and weeks roll by. His unenviable position is highlighted by his latest habit of blowing hod and cold against India.

The sudden aggravation of tension between India and Pakistan at this crucial juncture when the South Asian region is already struggling with the Afghan crisis is an ominous sign. Gen. Musharraf’s unnecessary threat against India has undoubtedly upped the ante between the two neighbours.

Gen. Musharraf’s open declaration of support for Kashmir terrorism, which he continues to insist on describing as a "freedom struggle", would have been enough, under any circumstances, to send alarm bells ringing across the Indian diaspora. That he chose to take the rhetoric a step further, going so far as to say that Pakistani armed forces were fully prepared to teach a lesson if India tried to launch an adventure against his country, could not but evoke a strong reaction from New Delhi, which it did.

"Stop hurling threats on us. Pakistan is not a country which can be browbeaten. We are not wearing bangles, and they will be paid back in the same coin if they resort to any adventurism", declared Gen. Musharraf, showing a totally senseless bravado at a time when all his attention should be concentrated on tackling the situation along Pakistan’s other border front with Afghanistan. Going by the developments at the Pak-Afghan border, the issue is fast becoming a flash-point for Islamabad.

Gen. Musharraf would do well to putting all his energy into easing the tension at that border, rather than opening a similar front on the Indian side. But then, experience also tells us that Islamabad has for long followed the practice of India-bashing to hide its own weaknesses. All the more reason for the Pak military ruler to divert the attention of his people from burning problems with his own country.

While one can understand Gen. Musharraf’s compulsions, it is difficult to understand his statement on India’s role in the current crisis in Afghanistan. His loaded comment: "We have separated India from the international coalition, and that was our biggest success".

Faced with such provocative statements, it was but natural that the Indian leadership, led by Mr Atal Behari Vajpayee himself, reacted with such intensity as they did. One hopes that the rhetoric will stop here and will not be taken further by either side. Neither India nor Pakistan can afford to let the tension between them reach such a high that they end up pushing each other to the brink.

Religious function held at Swami Pual’s Mediation Home
Knowing whole world without knowledge of self is meaningless: Swami Paul

Excelsior Correspondent

JAMMU, Oct 25: A function to mark the conclusion of Navratras Yagnas undertaken by Swami Paul Ji was held at Swami Paul’s Mediation Home Jammu which was attended by a large number of devotees and disciples on the auspicious Mahanavmi day.

Addressing the gathering, Swami Paul Ji brought out the significance of self realisation and said that man must endeavour to know the self as realisation of self is the only source to real joy and contentment. Man wanders to know more and more about surrounding environment without knowing about the self as to what he is and what is the object of his life. Man can control the environment in a better way and steer his life towards the peace and happiness. If the knowledge of self is gained. The material progress of whatsoever magnitude achieved and harnessing of the knowledge of entire world together can not bring the satisfaction in life which the realisation of can bless with, said Swami Ji.

Swami Ji said that through self realisation we can experience the bliss that comes from the union with God in a life span in harmony with the infinite. Everything in this world and every relation between human beings is temporary and perishable by lapse of time and it is only the relation of soul-the divine force in us with the almighty, the supreme power which runs the entire that remains for ever. To recognise this joyous and divinely unique relation between soul and the God, man must first seek the knowledge of self through spiritual practice which in itself paves the way to connect it to the ultimate. As one achieves this union, all the worldly relations and material desires are forgotten and man is blessed with the real joy and peace in life. Infact it is this ultimate success which man can achieve by fulfilling the real object and purpose of human life, Swamiji added.

He said that the process of realisation of self involves the spiritual development through the practice of spiritual and religious values and disciplines. Spiritual enlightenment brings in the real transformation of one’s attitudes towards self, other fellow humans, happiness, sufferings, peace and success in life and as a result of which the thoughts, words and actions are influenced by the spirituality to induce the sense of sacrifice of self and render service and welfare for others. It helps to recognise the divine sparks in every living being towards which we all owe the obligation in one way or the other. No progress, on achievement is complete unless it is shared by others. This is how we worship God in every being. For achieving, such spiritual growth, man has to maintain purity of body and mind and practice mediation. Mediation requires man to ceaselessly place the mind in God and through concentration have a direct contact with God. Mediation drives away the madness for worldly things and pleasures and helps man to distinguish correctly between wrong and right and inspire to do the virtuous and noble deeds. Once the man succeeds in concentrating fully in God during mediation, the experience of divine glory starts and miseries and disappointments become the things of past, Swamiji said.

Calling upon the devotees and disciples to work hard on this line of spiritual elevation Swamiji said that the years to the credit of every one’s life are fixed and we must realise that the life is getting reduced by every passing moment. Man, while leading the life must not feel engrossed in the worldly activities of amassing wealth and fulfilling material ambitions as this is not the real goal of life. Make the path of God pursuit of spirituality and mediation a part of daily life, exhorted Swami Ji.

He further said that we would be failing in discharge of duties of a responsible human beings if we do not inculcate the spiritual and religious values in our children. "To make the childhood free from stress, strains and conflicts we should encourage children to rejoice the natural things like flowers, rivers, mountains etc. We should endeavour to make out children spiritually and religiously responsible as they grow so that the entire outlook of the future generation could be made positive, constructive and perfectly human", he said.
