Centre to make sports facilities mandatory

CHANDIGARH, Oct 21: Union Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Ms Uma Bharti today announced that while each state would have a sports academy for promotion of a single game during the tenth five year plan, a proposal for the same five year plan had been sent to the Union Human Resource Ministry to make it mandatory for the upcoming educational institutes to have a play ground and sports facilities alongwith educational infrastructure.

The Union Minister was addressing a largely attended public meeting after laying the foundation stone of the Ch Devi Lal Northern Regional Centre of Sports Authority of India (SAI) at village Joshi Chauhan in Sonepat district.

She said that it would be the first such regional centre of SAI in the Northern part of the country. She appreciated the gesture of the village Panchayat for making available about one hundred acres of land for this prestigious project.

The Union Minister said that the sports academies to be set up in each state would lay stress on promotion of traditional games like kabaddi and wrestling.

She said that after passing 5th class, the young promising players would be provided opportunities to compete in sports competitions at block and district levels and outstanding players would be absorbed by the academies.

These students would be provided sports facilities of such a kind that would change the general attitude of parents who did not encourage their children to take interest in games.

Ms Uma Bharti was all praise for the incentives being given to sportspersons by Haryana Government and said that the State Government led by Mr Om Prakash Chautala had shown a new direction to others. She hoped that sportspersons of Haryana would get gold in the next Olympics to enhance the dignity of the nation.

Admitting that players in the country were not getting proper facilities, Ms Bharti said she made it clear to various sports federations to desist from indulging in politics and remain confined to promote sports.

She said that while preparations were going on to get gold in the next Olympics in Beijing, her ministry was considering to bid for the 2012 Olympics.

Paying rich tributes to Jan Nayak Ch Devi Lal the Union Minister said for her the departed leader was like her mentor and father. She said that it was he who guided her to treat masses as the symbol of God.

She said that Ch Devi Lal was very simple man whereas now a days the political leaders were getting conscious of their dress and hair style so as to look different in electronic media almost daily. It was difficult to distinguish between such leaders and the characters of any TV serial, she added.

Chief Minister Om Prakash Chautala expressed his gratitude to the Union Minister for fulfilling the promise of setting up a befitting memorial to Ch Devi Lal. He said that the bhumi pujan to start the construction work of the regional centre would be performed on October 27 and the first phase of the project would be ready by the next birthday of Ch Devi Lal falling on September 25. India new Jr Hockey World Champion

HOBART, Oct. 21: Powered by Deepak Thakur’s hat-trick, the Indian colts achieved what their seniors could not by thrashing Argentina 6-1 in the final of the World Junior Hockey Championship here today.

In a one-sided affair, India created history by winning the title for the first time.

Spurred by a brilliant hat-trick by Deepak Thakur in the second half and two excellent penalty corner strikes by Jugraj Singh, India coasted to an easy 6-1 victory over Argentina to clinch the gold medal.

Indian coach Rajinder Singh was overjoyed and said his boys proved today that they also could be world champions if hey got the goals to put pressure on the opposition.

A huge crowd had gathered at the Tasmanian Hockey Centre in perfect weather conditions to watch the grand final, which was expected to be a close encounter. The two teams had played each other in the pool matches and the result had been a 2-2 draw.

As the game unfolded the two teams played a slow possession game and neither seemed to be dominating. However, everything suddenly changed with the Indians making the most from their first entry into the Argentine circle with Prabhjot Singh sending the ball past the keeper after receiving a beautiful cross pass in the 10th minute.

India began to take control of the match and Jugraj Singh gave a glimpse of why he is considered a penalty corner specialist — his drag flick finding the back of the net to give India a 2-0 lead in the 19th minute.

It was only in the 21st minute that Argentina had their first shot when Rey shot wide off the Mark.

The Argentines counter attacks now increased but their forwards Marcelo Del Negro and Vila’s shots were blocked by the Indian defence. The Argentines also failed to convert a penalty corner in the 31st minute and thus India went into half time leading 2-0.

The Indians were well aware of being too defensive and thus started the second half with sustained pressure on the Argentines and earned two penalty corners in the 36th and 38th minutes. They wasted the first when a splendid save by the argentine goalkeeper prevented the Indians from going further ahead.

The famous Argentine counter attack found Lucas Cammerei in a great position in the center of the Indian circle who put the ball past Devesh Chauhan to reduce the margin.

The Indians were quick to respond with Jugraj Singh scoring his second goal through an excellent drag flick of a penalty corner in the 44th minute, which found the top left corner of the net. The Argentines counter attacked for a brief period and earned two penalty corners, which they could not convert.

The Indians regained composure and it was time for the flamboyance of the Indian front line to speak up for themselves. The Indian forwards started to combine well and Deepak Thakur seized a half chance of a shot from prabhjot singh, which he trapped and put past the keeper in one action.

Just two minutes later Deepak Thakur went down the left flank on a long solo run which he finished with an excellent reverse stick shot to put India 5-1 up.

Rey Lucas and Vikrak Pillai were yellow carded in the 57th minute for disagreement but all this could not distract Deepak from completing his hat-trick in the 59th minute. He received a great pass from Kanwalpreet Singh, which he easily finished to give India an invincible 6-1 lead.

Argentina counter attacked in the remaining 10 minutes, earning two penalty corners but could not reduce the margin.

India had won their first Junior World Cup title in its 22-year-old history.

"India was too good today," acknowledged the Argentine coach Alex Verga after the final.

"This was a great performance by the Indian team. We did not let go off the pressure at any moment of the game and thus emerged winners," said an ecstatic Indian coach Rajinder Singh.

"I am glad that I have finally achieved as a coach what I couldn’t do as a player for India — win the World Cup," said a beaming Rajinder Singh.

Korea then beat the Netherlands to be in the seventh position. (UNI)

Excelsior Sports Correspondent

JAMMU, Oct 21: Confident and well balanced side of Punjab will take on host Jammu and Kashmir in the opening one-day tie in the North-Zone under-19 (Cooch Behar) Cricket Tournament at M A Stadium, here tomorrow.

The one-day match, which has been introduced for the first time in the under-19 year group by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), will be followed by the three-day tie, beginning from October 23, at the same venue.

The ill prepared J&K side may not be able to perform upto the expectations in the absence of pre-tournament competitions and the coaching camp. Even the players, who are part of the 20 members selected probables for the one-day and three day competitions, have ‘little’ coordination and are playing as a team for the first time.

While on the other hand, a well build and balanced side of Punjab looked quite confident in view of their preparations for this prestigious tournament. They have played a number of matches before and after their selection for the State team two months ago.

However, the selectors have said that they have picked-up the best talent available in the State from and amongst the boys attended the nets during the four-day long trials.

The selected probables in the under-19 year group are Sandeep, Vimarsh Kaw, Shammi Salaria, Abhishekh Singh, Mayank Goswami, Raman Thaploo, Kulbushan Singh, Mahul, Kapil, Harpreet, Adil, Rayaz Ahmed, Fayeen, Rayeez Ahmed, Omar, Rafiq, Mosin, Innes Ahmed, Nadeem and Mohd Ali.

The selection was done by the three-member committee including Vinod Bakshi, Sudershan Bali, W Amin and Shiban Lal Koul. Shiban Lal has been named as manager of the team.

Meanwhile, the selection for the under-14 group was still going on and the final team will be announced tomorrow, said joint secretary of the Jammu wing, Hardev Singh.

The three-day match in this group will start from October 23 at GGM Science College ground. In this match again Punjab will meet host J&K.
