South Africa post a huge total

EAST LONDON (South Africa), Oct 19: Indian bowlers took a hammering as South Africa piled up a huge 282 for four in their allotted 50 overs in a Triangular one-day series match here today.

Electing to bat after captain Shaun Pollock won the toss, the South African batsmen glided along nicely throughout the innings and were never in trouble against some insipid Indian attack.

The only consolation for the Indians was probably that they were able to restrict their opponents within 300-runs which looked a distinct possibility when the South Africans raised 200 in the 38th over.

Some clever bowling by the spinners led by Harbhajan Singh restricted the run-flow somewhat during the middle overs after Herschelle Gibbs and Boeta Dippenaar had given the hosts a flying start, but that was hardly enough to prevent them from reaching a challenging total.

Jonty Rhodes and Lance Klusener did a characteristic brisk-scoring act in the slog overs adding 51 runs in the last five overs to put their team on the top.

Dippenaar, who topscored with 81, and Gibbs, who made a 43-ball 47, gave South Africa a blazing start, scoring at over seven an over initially and the later batsmen did well to capitalise on the solid foundation.

Harbhajan and Kumble went wicketless, conceding 40 and 54 runs respectively in their ten overs while Srinath took two for 55 from his quota. Agarkar was the most expensive giving away 64 runs in eight overs.

Srinath and Agarkar were sent on a leatherhunt in their first spell, both conceding well over six an over, as Gibbs started off in a characteristic attacking style. He hit Agarkar for two fours and a six to take 15 runs from the bowler’s third over.

The Indians heaved a sigh of relief when Gibbs mistimed a drive off Agarkar and gave a simple catch at mid-wicket to Virender Sehwag. South Africa lost their first wicket at 63 in the tenth over.

Nicky Boje was sent up the order to continue the quick scoring and he did that ably, helped by the Indians pathetic ground fielding.

Boje was even dropped, by Rahul Dravid in the slips, in the early part of his knock but thankfully he did not last long, becoming a victim of a mix-up with dippenaar to be run out for 18.

That brought Jacques Kallis together with dippenaar in a 103-run partnership for the third wicket which milked the Indian bowlers. They ran quickly between the wickets, easily converting singles into twos, to keep up the momentum going when the spinners made boundaries a little difficult to come by.

Dippenaar used the cut shot to very effective use, often playing it very late, and took a number of runs in the third man and point region. A single off Sehwag in the 26th over brought up his second consecutive 50 in the series.

Kallis, on the other hand, played a number of sweep shots to counter the spinners. He swept Kumble through the midwicket for two boundaries in the 20th over and gave Sehwag the same treatment in the 30th over.

Restricting South Africa to 231 in the 45th over, India seemed to be doing well. But the last five overs proved very costly. Sehwag went for 15 runs in the 46th over while Agarkar was taken for 20 runs in his two overs. Even though Srinath squeezed in the 48th over conceding just three runs, the South Africans had already put on a challenging total.

When the last report was filled, India was playing at 64 for without loss in 10.5 overs.

Team’s SOS for Laxman

EAST LONDON (South Africa), Oct 19: Rattled by the failure of its middle-order, the Indian team management has asked the cricket board to fly star batsman V V S Laxman straightway to join the team in South Africa for the remaining matches of the Triseries currently on.

"We have requested the cricket board to send Laxman as quickly as possible," said team manager M K Bhargava here today.

"He most probably will join the team before the match against Kenya at Paarl on October 24," said Bhargava, an indication that the go-ahead has already been given on the subject by the board.

Laxman could not make it to the Indian team earlier on this tour because he had still not recovered fully from a knee operation. But his stupendous 148 not out for Rest of India against Baroda in the Irani Trophy has given right signals that everything is good with the ace middle order batsman.

The Hyderabad stalwart hogged the headlines with his exceptional 281 against Austrtlia in the Kolkata test earlier this year which is the highest total ever by an Indian batsman and scripted the most remarkable turnaround in the history of the game, plotting a 2-1 win over the Aussies.

Both Shiv Sunder Das and Jacob Martin, though promising, are still to find their feet in one-day cricket and the team can do with the services of someone like Laxman. (PTI)

India beat Germany 3-2 to enter final

HOBART (Australia), Oct 19: Riding on a brilliant display of slick passing and some classy defending, India overcame a determined fightback by Germany to win 3-2 and storm into the final of the 7th Junior World Cup Hockey Championships here today.

With this remarkable win, India entered the final of the World Cup for the second consecutive time. India reached the final in the last edition in 1997 at Milton Keynes (England) where they lost 2-3 to Australia.

For Germany, this was the second consecutive semifinal defeat in the Junior World Cup final at the hands of India. In the last edition, they had lost 3-4.

India today looked like running away with the match when they led 3-0 at half-time. The Indian goals came through Kanwalpreet Singh (2nd minute), Inderjeet Singh (23rd) and Arjun Halappa (34th minute).

Credit should be given to the Germans who fought back brilliantly in the second half to score through Florian Keller (52nd) and Matthias Witthaus (66th). But the Indian defence held on and did not allow the Germans to score the equaliser.

A beaming Indian coach Rajinder Singh was all praise for the boys. "I had said beforehand that if the fowards score, then you can’t stop India from winning. We had opportunities in the first half and the boys did well to utilise them.

"In the second half, Germany was expected to throw everything to us and we decided to pull one midfielder away and strengthen the defence. It paid off as we kept them away especially in the penalty corners where Devesh Chauhan and Jugraj Singh did a great job."

Within a minute of the start, Bimal Lakra’s scoop from the Indian half found Deepak Thakur in the German circle but the advancing goalkeeper used a body check and the umpire ruled a penalty stroke in favour of India.

Kanwalpreet Singh’s flick was waist high but good enough to beat the German keeper. Two minutes on the board and India were already 1-0 ahead.

India were playing well in the midfield where ignace Tirkey and Bimal Lakra were having a field day, spraying passes for the forwards.

By the 20th minute, Germany had two penalty corners but both were wasted.

India went ahead in the 23rd minute when Deepak Thakur, the tournament’s highest scorer with seven goals, ran all the way into the German half, ducked two defenders and passed superbly to Inderjeet Singh who forced out the German ‘keeper and finished amazingly to give India a 2-0 lead’.

From a midfield move on the left, came India’s third goal. Tejbir Singh trapped the ball a little outside the circle and after going past two German midfielders, gave it to Arjun Hallapa who turned smartly and shot past the shocked German goalkeeper.

At the break, India led 3-0.

After resumption, Germany came back with new tactics and decided to post an extra foward upfront while pulling away one from the midfield. They had to get the goals and a gap in the midfield did not matter much at such a stage. India could have taken advantage of the weakened midfield but they were also pulling men into the defence knowing that Germany will go for an all-out attack.

After wasting a penalty corner in the 47th minute, Germany were on target with their fifth as Florian Keller flicked powerfully to beat Chauhan in goal in the 52nd minute.

Germany were thereon in an attack mode as they kept the ball in the Indian half and really piled on the pressure. They had four consecutive penalty corners in the 55th, 56th, 57th and 58th minutes. But the Indian goalkeeper Chauhan and defender Jugraj Singh saved brilliantly.

After India had wasted an important goal opportunity, coach Rajinder Singh pulled out one man from the midfield and brought him into the defence. At one point of time, there were six players in the defence trying to keep the Germans away.

The Germans consistently fought back and after wasting their 10th penalty corner, they finally scored off a field goal by Matthias Witthaus.

For both the sides nerves were almost at breaking point as the German bench egged on their players to get the equaliser while the Indian bench cheered their defence while keeping an eye on the clock all the time.

Time finally ran out and the ecstatic Indians hugged each other, basked in the glory of victory.

In the final on Sunday, India will meet winners of the second semi-final between Argentina and England. (PTI)

Addressing at the prize distribution function of the Annual Training camp of 2nd J&K Girls Bn. NCC at Nagrota, about 13 kms. from here today, the Chief Minister said that the youth especially the girls have to play a key role for overall peace and prosperity of the country which is passing through a crucial period of global terrorism and violence.

The Chief Minister while referring to the importance of NCC training camps said that the students learn discipline, dedication, team spirit, tolerance, brotherhood and fellow feeling in such get-togethers.
