India beat Kenya by 10 wkts

BLOEMFONTEIN (South Africa), Oct 12: India made Kenya look like a schoolboy side, thrasing them by 10 wickets in a Triangular one-day series match here today.

In a hopelessly one-sided encounter, the Indians skittled out Kenya for a paltry 90 runs in 37.1 overs with Ajit Agarkar and Anil Kumble sharing seven wickets between them.

India then dismissed the Kenyan challenge with contempt, with Virender Sehwag and rookie wicketkeeper Deep Dasgupta notching up the required runs in just 11.3 overs to give their team their second successive win in the tournament.

The win earned India a bonus point in addition to the three points. India are now placed at the top of the table with two wins from three matches. South Africa who also earned a bonus point against Kenya have same points but India have a better run rate than the hosts.

PCB slaps one-year ban on Muhammad Akram

ISLAMABAD, Oct 12: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has slapped a one-year ban on fast bowler Muhammad Akram for serious breach of discipline.

The PCB officials decided to impose the ban on Akram for domestic and international cricket following the recommendations of its disciplinary committee.

The move came after the PCB found Akram’s explanation unsatisfactory regarding his sudden departure to England midway through a national training camp without obtaining permission from the camp commandant and the board, the news, quoting sources, said today.

Akram’s contention was that he had to reach London immediately since his wife was very ill.

He flew to London although the selectors had included him in the national squad for the Asian Test Championship match with Bangladesh in August.

However, the PCB did not implement the full recommendations of the disciplinary committee, which included Iqbal Qasim, Sirajul Islam Bukhari, Abdul Raquib, Maazullah Khan and Major Awan, as it did not impose any financial penalty on the fast bowler.

In fact, the committee had recommended a three-year ban for Akram, the daily added. (UNI)

India score fine victory over Spain, tops the table

HOBART, Oct 12: Riding on Jugraj Singh’s penalty corner strike and field goals by Deepak Thakur and Gagan Ajit Singh, India registered a 3-0 win against Spain to top the table in the seventh Junior Men’s World Cup here today.

India dominated the early part of the game without looking dangerous but a penalty corner in the sixth minute for an obstruction gave India an early opportunity in the match. Jugraj Singh made no mistake as his shot found the left corner of the net.

The early goal stung the Spanish team into action and they slowly started to gain more possession of the ball and move into the Indian circle constantly. The Indian defence was up to the task and admirable battle for supremacy in the mid-field was unfolding in the clearing rain with no team finding it easy to dominate. The Spanish team could not convert either of their two penalty corners in the first half and Indian’s went to half time with a 1-0 lead but with no team seeming to have an upper hand.

Rain continued to fall lightly as the second half started with the Indians trying to force the pace. Once again the Indians made the most of their chances and prolific goal scorer Deepak Thakur scored with a firm hit into the right corner of the goal in the 41st minute.

India’s skipper Gagan Ajit Singh finally got his first goal of the tournament in the 50th minute to put India 3-0 up.

The Spanish team tried its best to come back into the game but the Indian defence held out gamely, even though Jugraj Singh was injured in the 53rd minute.

In the dying minutes of the match, Spain forced two penalty corners - 60th minute and 65th minute, but could not beat the Indian defence.

Umpires took control as the team got involved in several tackles - giving Esteban Alberto of Spain and Viren Rasquinha of India yellow cards for their play.

India emerged 3-0 winners in their first real test at the seventh Junior Men’s World Cup hockey in Hobart. India thus topped Pool C and will play a runner up team in their next round of matches.

"We took most of our chances while the Spaniards fail to convert theirs," said a relieved Indian coach Rajinder Singh after the match.

"We have achieved our first aim of topping the poll and now we enter the tough stage of competing with the best teams," said the Indian coach after the victory.

Earlier Scotland beat Canada 3-1 to finish third in the group with Canada taking the last spot. (UNI)
