Indians bowled out for 233

CENTURION PARK (Pretoria), Oct 10: It was once again a case of missed opportunities for India who were bowled out for 233 inside their quota of overs after a reasonably good start in a Triangular one-day series match against South Africa here today.

On quite a few occasions after captain Saurav Ganguly elected to bat on winning the toss, the Indians had partnerships going. However, just when the batsmen looked set for a big knock, the South Africans struck back effecting a breakthrough.

Five Indian batsmen got off to good starts but only Rahul Dravid, who top scored with 54, was able to cross the fifty run mark. Yuveraj Singh (42), Sachin Tendulkar (38), Virender Sehwag (33) and Ganguly (27), who was unfortunate to be given out, saw their knocks abruptly ended at crucial junctures.

For the hosts, captain Shaun Pollock led from the front bagging a five-wicket haul, his last wicket bringing up his 200th wicket in one-day internationals.

The Indians probably started accelerating a bit too early and lost too many wickets in the process. In the end, they ran out of batsmen with the tailenders having to negotiate the slog overs. Bowled out in 48.4 overs, it once again looks that the Indians had settled for 20-30 runs too few.

Unlike the first one-dayer where India had started with a flourish, Ganguly and Tendulkar began on a more cautious note today, preferring to have a good look at the bowlers before going on the attack.

With the pitch slightly more difficult for the batsmen than the one at Johannesburg, where India suffered a six wicket loss to the same opponents last Friday, only 18 runs could be scored in the first six overs.

However, Ganguly, who returned to form with a brilliant 127 in the previous match, decided to up the ante and hoisted Pollock for two sixes in the bowler’s fourth over. On both occasions, the left-hander came out to make room and lofted the ball over the cover region.

Tendulkar also took the cue and hit Andre Nel for two successive boundaries in the next over. The two overs produced 25 runs for the Indians before disaster struck.

Pollock, in his fifth over, decided to come round the wicket to Ganguly who snicked to second slip where Jacques Kallis looked to have taken a brilliant reflex catch. However, tv replays showed the ball had touched the ground while in the fielder’s hand and clearly Ganguly should not have been given out. Ganguly’s 24 came off 24 balls and contained two sixes and a four.

Shiv Sunder Das, who is trying to get a foothold in limited overs cricket, could not stay long and gave a regulation catch to Lance Klusener at second slip in the South African captain’s next over after making just two runs. (PTI)

With love from Udayan to Waugh

KOLKATA, Oct 10: It has been love from ‘Udayan’, a home for children of the leprosy afflicted, to their ‘Uncle Steve’ since he was diagnosed with a life threatening blood clot in a calf muscle.

Get well cards hand-painted by the children have been sent to Steve Waugh, a patron of the home. Special prayers are being held every day for the Aussie skipper in danger of suffering a deep vein thrombosis because of the blood clot.

A day after Waugh confirmed his condition on October 3, Rev J J Stevens, one of the founder-members of Udayan, conveyed it to the office-bearers.

"We broke the news to the children during the evening prayers. They all were extremely concerned. We held special prayers for his speedy recovery. And we are praying every day," Udayan’s Administrative Committee member Promod Mahapatra told PTI here.

The children had played ‘Holi’, the festival of colours, with Waugh and posed for a photo session with their ‘Uncle’ on March 9 this year.

An Udayan patron spoke over telephone to the Australian skipper to convey to him the distresss of the children.

"Waugh, however, said that there was nothing to worry about and he was under treatment," Udayan’s governing body member Dr D P Sen said.

The 36-year-old veteran of 139 tests will miss the start of Australia’s domestic season this weekend because of his condition, also called economy class syndrome, but hoped to be back in the national squad for the first test against New Zealand in five weeks.

Waugh’s sentimental bond with the children of Udayan dates back to 1998, when he became interested in the home during Australia’s tour of India.

The Australians had played a test match here which gave him the opportunity to see the project for himself.

Waugh had returned to the metropolis shortly after the completion of the tour to lay the foundation stone of ‘Nivedita Bhavan’, the girls’ wing of Udayan.

He also raised funds for the project and sent a shipment of folding cots for the home.

Waugh paid his third visit to the home last year when he flew in from Johannesburg and inaugurated ‘Nivedita Bhavan’. Continuing the good work, he also raised Rs 20.25 lakh through an auction-cum-charity dinner. (PTI)

Reigning champs Australia score big, England
post their 2nd win

HOBART, Oct 10: Reigning champions Australia displayed their title-winning form as they thrashed Chile 7-1 in their second outing in the 7th Junior World Cup Hockey Tournament here today.

Yesterday, Australia were held to a 1-1 draw by Ireland. South Africa began their campaign in Pool B with a narrow 3-2 win over an unfancied French team while England stayed on top of Pool A scoring their second successive win beating Ireland 1-0.

In the morning session bronze medallist in the last edition of the tournament Germany waged a grim battle to down Argentina 2-1 while South Korea snatched a point as they held Holland to a 1-1 draw.

New Zealand also had to battle it out and overcame a 1-2 deficit to beat spirited Malaysia 3-2.

Australian forwards Craig victory and Steven Bullion combined brilliantly to give their team a handsome 5-0 lead in the first half of their match against Chile.

Craig started the goal glut in the seventh minute when he stole the ball from a lax Chile defender at the top left of the circle and hit a clean shot into the right hand corner. A brilliant one two with Bullion on the right side gave Craig Victory his second goal in 11th minute.

Two minutes later it was Steven Bullion’s chance as he received a pass and scored off a reverse stick shot from near the penalty spot. Another mistake by the Chilean defence - this time the goalkeeper who could only pad the ball for Nathan Eglingston to gleefully avail the chance to score Australia’s fourth goal.

Steven Bullion followed this up in the next minute with another brilliant field goal. He received a pass at the top of the penalty circle and hit a superbly placed shot to the bottom left corner for Australian’s fifth goal.

Australia could have gone further ahead but a brilliant save by Chilean goalkeeper denied Travis Brooks a goal with the first half ending 5-0 in favour of the hosts.

The Aussies came back after the breather and continued in their attacking mode, when local lad Philip Marshall gained control in a scramble and shot the ball past the keeper. The Chileans then made the most of a slightly relaxed Aussie side to pull on back of a penalty corner goal by Pablo Kushlenthal off a brilliant variation.

Chile wasted three more penalty corners before Robert Hammond rounded off the scoring in the 69th minute to give the Aussies a well deserved 7-1 win in their second Pool A match.

Ian Hayley’s deflection of a hard centre from the left with a few seconds on the clock gave South Africa a last minute 3-2 victory over unfancied France in a Pool B match.

South Africa were definitely the superior team throughout but the dogged French team gave them a good fight for the entire duration of the match. In fact France neutralised South Africa’s 20th minute penalty corner strike with 2 strikes of penalty corners - one in the 21st minute and the other in the 47th minute which put them 2-1 ahead.

It was at this stage of the match that the South African started to assert their superiority and struck two field goals through Reece Basson and the final strike by Ian Heyley to clinch a narrow victory.

The team from Ireland played another good game of hockey today to prove that their draw against reigning champions Australia yesterday was not a freak performance. They lost out 0-1 to England with the english team having to wait till the 65th minute for the winner.

Ireland started the game keeping possession of the ball and holding out against the pace of the english forwards and mid-field. The Irish pressure resulted in two penalty corners early in the first half both of which were brilliantly saved by english goalkeeper.

The Irish team kept up the pressure and came close to scoring in the 26th minute. England fought back towards the final stages of the first half when both teams traded fast-breaks as half time approached. There was no score at half time.

Early in the second half two fouls resulted in Stephen Symington of Ireland and Jon Peckett of England receiving yellow cards. The english team dominated proceedings in the second half but they too found it difficult to find the net.

They failed to convert five penalty corners and just as it looked that the Irish would earn another draw, Martin Jones scored off a superb reverse stick from the top left of the circle to give England a narrow 1-0 victory.

England thus stayed ahead of Australia in Pool A with two successive victories at the Tasmanian Hockey Centre in Hobart. (UNI)

Seles marches into Shanghai Open QFs

SHANGHAI, Oct 10: Top seed Monica Seles overcame a sluggish start to reach the Shanghai Open quarter-finals with a 6-4 6-2 win over Saori Obata of Japan today.

Seles had a difficult time finding her rhythm in the first set, spraying groundstrokes wide and double-faulting five times — twice in a row while serving at 3-2, deuce — to lose her serve.

However, the American broke back in the next game and cruised through the remainder of the second-round match.

"It was really tough conditions out there. It was very windy, and for me it’s always tough playing a left-handed player," Seles said.

Seventh-seeded Rita Grande of Italy also moved into the quarter-finals today with a 6-2 6-4 victory over Ludmila Cervanova of Slovakia.

In the tournament’s last first-round match, fourth-seeded Ai Sugiyama of Japan beat Hungarian Zsofia Gubacsi 7-5 6-2.(REUTERS)

In the second quarter-final of the day, Degree College, Kathua had no body to play against thus getting walkover to reach the semi-finals. ‘JKCA is inactive not the clubs’

Excelsior Sports Correspondent

JAMMU, Oct 10: The three clubs of WCC, KCC and RCC have categorically denied that they were ‘inactive’ from the last 12 years and alleged that it was Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association (JKCA) which remained ‘defunct and inactive’ all these years in the State.

Reacting sharply to a statement issued by the Srinagar based Jammu and Kashmir Cricketers’ Forum, president of two of these clubs, told EXCELSIOR that the allegations of ‘inactiveness’ levelled against them were ‘false and cooked’ and given on the behest of some JKCA members.

President of the WCC, Chaman Lal said, "the way things were mentioned in the Forum’s statement, showed no concern for the cricketers but were inclined toward the Association, so we challenged the credibility of the Forum". In fact, JKCA itself did not exist in Kashmir for the last over 12 years, he added.

He further said that if JKCA wants to once again come on its rails, why such forums are disrupting the process thereby harming its unity.

Justifying their point, they said that from the last one decade, the JKCA could not organise any tournament mobilising the affiliated clubs. And when these clubs took part in the Junior level tournament organised by the JKCA last year at University of Jammu, the competitions were stopped in between.

Pointing out at a specific allegation of club subsidy and perks already obtained by the clubs, KCC president and one time general secretary of JKCA, M L Nehru said that subsidy was demanded by Kashmir clubs coming out of long hybernation in 1998 in which their clubs were not a party. However, later it was with great difficulty that JKCA agreed to pay them the same, he added.

It was alleged by the heads of WCC and KCC that during all these years they were taken for granted by the JKCA and were never invited in any of its meeting during all these years. Moreover, the JKCA never held the working committee meeting during the last one decade, which is as per the JKCA constitution, mandatory twice in a year, so the question of clubs activeness and inactiveness does not arise, they continued.
