India records facile 5-0 win over Canada in the opener

HOBART, Oct 9: Runners up India opened their campaign in a style with a authoritative 5-0 win over Canada in the 7th Junior World Cup Hockey Championship here today.

For the winners, who led 3-0 at half time, Prabhjot Singh, Jugraj Singh struck twice while Deepak Thakur scored one.

Earlier in the morning favourite and defending champion Australia were made to struggle by unheralded Ireland and were forced to share the points as they were held to a 1-1 draw,

England routed Chile 5-2 and Spain thrashed Scotland 8-0 in other matches of the day.

The Indian forwards converted most of the chances that came their way, scoring four field goals.

"All our systems - defence, mid-field and forwards functioned very well but we still have to improve upon our penalty corner conversions," said Indian coach Rajinder Singh after the match.

The Indian team started on a cautious note, accessing the strength of the Canadian team in the first ten minutes. After that it was all India in the first half with their forwards going on a rampage and the Canadian defence was hard pressed to stop the onslaught.

The first goal came off a scramble in the circle with Deepak Sonkhla making the most of the opportunity by slamming the ball past an unsighted goalkeeper in the 12th minute.

Immediately after the restart, Prabhjit Singh made a great individual run down the left side and as soon as he entered the circle, he surprised the Canadian goalkeeper with a reverse shot -this was vintage Indian hockey at its best.

Prabhjot Singh was in the act again and in the 25th minute he received a pass in the top left corner of the circle and flicked it in with a reverse stick to make it 3-0.

Indians could have been five goals up by the end of the first half but they missed out on the two penalty corners they gained - one in the 28th minute and one on the stroke of half-time. Both were very feeble attempts and easily saved by the goalkeeper.

Much was expected of the Indian penalty corner specialist Jugraj Singh and he responded to his critics by coming back with a bang in the 42nd minute of the second half. After missing a 3rd penalty corner in the 6th minute Jugraj came up with a fabulous drag flick all along the ground which beat the goalkeeper all ends up for India’s fourth goal.

While India gained 2 more penalty corners which they could not convert, Jugraj showed his versatility by scoring and elegant field goal in the 55th minute to put Indian five goals in front.

Canada fought back off counter attacks and won themselves 3 penalty corners, which the Indian defenders easily defended.

"Penalty corner conversions was our only grey area today as we managed to convert only one out of five," said the Indian coach.

"Spain is the team we will have to beat to top our group," said Singh having earlier watched them beat Scotland 8 - 0.

The Aussie-Ireland match was a defence dominated match with both sides effective in their markings. There were a total of 12 penalty corners in the match. The Aussie team earned 7 to Ireland’s five.

The Aussies struck on their first penalty corner in the 12th minute. Nathan Eglington was the scorer with a slapin along the ground off a pass to the left of the goal.

Early in the second half the Aussies were a bit too aggressive which resulted in two of their players - Joshua Hawes and David Gust being shown the green card by the portuguese umpire Pedro Tixeira.

The Irish got the equaliser off their second penalty corner, with David Hobbs scoring from deflection from the left side.

England started in style, scoring four field goals in a tally of five against underdogs Chile who pulled back one goal in each half.

The first five minutes for England forwards saw them go up 2-0 to set the pattern for their dominance in the opener. Jonty Clark put England one up in the second minute and Marion Jones made no mistake on a stroke in the fourth minute to consolidate the lead.

Chile struck back and got a goal on the first short corner in the 10th minute.

The fast early pace soon started to tell on both the teams and the game slowed down in the remainder of the first half. The match tended to get a bit rough too with green cards being shown to Christobal Rodrigues of chile and Martin Jones of England in the 20th minute.

England began the second half in style with a great individual effort by Martin Jones. Martin received the ball at the 25 yard line and scored with a great flick aimed at an acute angle on the right side of the goalkeeper.

England went further ahead with another field goal in the 49th minute by Richard Mantell and James Webeer’s reverse flick off a pass from Jon Peckett made it 5-1.

Underdogs Chile made the most of a complacent english team in the dying minutes of the game, scoring a field goal through Alan Stein.

Spain toyed with Scotland, scoring at will. Quemade Pablo scored three goals while Eduard Tabau and Freixa Santiago scored two each to lead the 8-0 rout of Scotland.

Spain scored 5 field goals and 3 penalty corner goals in their win. However, like India, their penalty corner conversions left much to be desired as they could only score three out of a total of eight penalty corners they earned.

Pablo started the scoring of a penalty corner in the 7th minute and rounded it off scoring the 8th goal in the 67th minute again off a penalty corner. Tabau scored 2 field goals in the 14th and 32nd minute and Santiago in the 26th minute and 50th minute.

Indians have a rest day tomorrow before they take on Scotland on the 11th and Spain in their final and most crucial match to end their first round Pool C matches. (UNI)

J&K’s cricketer finds berth in ‘Rest of India’ team

By Sanjeev Sharma

JAMMU, Oct 9: After finding berth in India-A, which played against Australia in Mumbai in March this year, Surinder Singh Bagal has made another first from Jammu and Kashmir by getting his name included in prestigious ‘Rest of India’ side, which was announced recently at Mumbai.

It was for the second time that Surinder Singh has created history for Jammu and Kashmir. Earlier, he was selected for the India camp, but his performance was not considered "upto the mark" and was dropped from the final Indian team which played against Australia in the home series.

However, this time Surinder is confident enough of a good show in the Irani Trophy, which could help him in getting the attention of the selectors.

Talking to EXCELSIOR here today, a day before his departure for the venue for the Irani Trophy, Surinder said, " I am eagerly waiting for a break at the international level which I visualise through the Irani Trophy. I will give my best this time for which I have been working hard".

"Since India has three left hand medium-pacers and myself being one of them, I must be given a chance, because the other two have already been looked into", he wished.

At present Surinder is occupying third position in the country in the list of lefty medium pacers after Ashish Nehra and Zaheer Khan. After the ouster of the duo from the ongoing South African tour, hardworking and dedicated Surinder hopes that there is every likelihood that he shall be invited to join the team in their next visit abroad.

Stepping right towards his ultimate goal of playing for India, Surinder, during the last one year time, played in Daleep Trophy, Deodhar Trophy, attended the India camp and played for the India-A. And now, has been included in the Rest of India team for Irani Trophy.

In his first ever exclusive interview to EXCELSIOR in December 2000, Surinder had said, "it was my first step towards an ultimate goal of becoming an International cricketer which every Jammuite dreams of".

However, upset, but positive towards his goal, Surinder said, "It is a bitter truth which every body knows in this part of the world that J&K has no good rapport with the Board of Cricket Control in India (BCCI) resulting into the players getting little push at the time of crucial phases of selections", adding, "I would have definitely got a chance in the Indian team had I been representing Department or some other state".

Before being invited for the Irani trophy, Surinder played in the Challenger Trophy and later attended the camp which held before the Indian team’s tour to Zimbabwe.

However, Surinder’s performance during the last one year, has put him into the list of most promising players of the country, thus attracting the sponsors. He has got an offer for the sponsorship from an international sports goods company Reebok’s Delhi based office.

"After my selection in the Rest of India, Reebok called me up for the sponsorship and soon I will be in Delhi to finalise the contract, which may be for an year", said Surinder.

Hailing from village Raya in Samba, he is the first ever cricketer from Jammu and Kashmir State, who has attained this distinction. Surinder used to practice at University of Jammu and M A Stadium.

The budding bowler felt concerned for the Jammu cricketers, who despite having a lot of talent, get little chance to explore it at the national hook-up.

Quoting an item published in EXCELSIOR, Surinder said, Raju Sharma, who recently found berth in the Delhi team for the Ranji Trophy, which clearly indicated the talent J&K possess. Surinder, who too played for Delhi in the U-19 group, preferred to play for J&K during all these years as Raju desired.

After becoming the first cricketer from J&K to attend the India camp in March this year, Surinder Singh was assured of a job by the Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association president, Ajatshatru Singh, who is also a cabinet Minister in the J&K Government. But still having been unemployed, Surinder is now being offered employment by the Railways Indian Airlines and Air India, but still his most preferred place is J&K.

"I want to play for J&K for my berth place for the rest of my career, but if no one will care for me, I will be forced to join some department outside the State", said visibly dejected Surinder.

The Rest of India team, led by stylist batsman V V S Laxman, will take on Ranji Trophy champion Baroda in the five-day Irani Trophy at Pune from October 12 to 16.

The team: V V S Laxman (captain-Hyderabad), Akash Chopra and Rahul Sanghvi (both from Delhi), Dinesh Mongia and Sharandeep Singh (both from Punjab), Vinayak Mane (Mumbai), Yere Gowd (Railways), Hrishikesh Kanitkar (Maharashtra), R Parida and D Mohanty (both from Orissa), Ajay Rathra (Haryana), Surinder Singh (J&K), S Srivastava (UP) and T Yohannan (Kerala).
