No scope for Pak duplicity

Sir,

Just two days after the terrorist attack on America's World Trade Centre and the Pentagon, Secretary of State Colin L Powell telephoned Pakistan's president General Parvez Musharraf to present to him with a list of action the US administration would like him to take for bringing Osama-bin Laden to justice.

Sensing the grave nature of the events which took place in New York on the 11th September General Musharraf immediately offered unstinted support to USA to fight against the terrorists and to assist in its efforts to track down the most dangerous man in the world: Osama-bin-Laden. Fearing that Pakistan itself could become the foremost target of the welled up wrath of the "wounded lion" that America today is, the General has agreed to all the demands including providing basis on Pak soil, closing its border with Afghanistan and supplying all the information it has about Osama-bin Laden.

However, it is easy said than done for the General. The Islamic fundamentalist outfits in Pakistan have grown so strong that despite strict orders from the government to stop collecting funds for so called jehad in Kashmir these organisation have continued there drive openly. The Pakistan government's order to deposit the unlicensed arms and stop the public display of even the licensed ones, were flouted with impunity. Finding himself helpless in reining in the terrorist organisations General Musharraf recently moaned "Pakistan today is the most dangerous country in the world".

Pakistan today is an economic wreck. The country is ruled by narcotic lords. The General is not only faced with growing heat from the fundamentalists his government's most powerful intelligence wing the ISI too is not under his full control. There are powerful elements in his army that are hostile to him. But this is the time that General Parvez Musharraf can not only save his own gaddi he can also pull out Pakistan from the quagmire all of which is not of his making.

The United States of America has vowed to wage a global war to root out terrorism completely. Pakistan itself has been a victim of terrorist violence. For two decades India too has terribly suffered from the acts of cross border terrorism. The world today is united in its resolve to wipe out the forces of terrorism. Pakistan must join the war whole heartedly to ensure peace and prosperity for its coming generations and those of its neighbours General Musharraf may have realised how that there is no scope for duplicity as is being indulged by Pakistan in the proxy war against India, in training and shielding the Talibans, or while building its nuclear arsenal with the Chinese help.

It is now or never for the General.

Construct Nallah, culverts

Sir,

We the inhabitants of Laxami Nagar Sector No: 1 Muthi Jammu are facing acute hardships for want of Road, Nallah, & Culverts. We have been pursuing our just cause from one office to another way back since 1997. And it was in the year 1998 that Ex. Eng PWD (R&B) recommended for construction of Road, Drain & culverts vide his letter no: 10309-11 dated 10.3.98. The total estimate which was recommended was to the tune of Rs. 7. 63 Lakhs. Upon the mentioned recommendation Chief Eng. PWD (R&B) sanctioned an amount of Rs. 6.90 Lakhs for this project vide his letter no: 10673-78 dated 12.9.98.

At this end the Department mismanaged the whole thing. First, till date these funds have not been utilized. Second what ever funds have been utilized have been mismanaged and utilized in very unprofessional manner. Instead of constructing complete drain only 1/3rd of Drain was constructed. Then 1/3rd of Road was constructed. The incomplete drain washed away our road & Drain during last rains.

Now uptil dated neither the Funds have been utilized and work completed even after three years nor any officer of the Department has even cared to see the site, thereby the difficulties of in habitants of Laxami Nagar Sector No: 1 Muthi Jammu are increasing day by day. We, now request Chief Eng. PWD (R&B) to personally look into the matter and order to complete the unfinished job immediately.

Change school timing

Sir,

We, the students of the Girls Govt. Hr. Secondary School Mubarik Mandi Jammu want to draw the attention of the concerned authorities towards the problems beign faced by us.

Our main problem is that of school timing. Our school starts at 9.00 AM and closes at 3 PM (during practicals), otherwise at 1.30. During this period, 1 hour and 45 minutes are lost in attending morning assembly and taking lunch. We request the school authorities to change the timing, so as to enable us to take tuitions after school closes. Otherwise, we suffer very badly.

Staging of 'Dhak Ghar'

Sir,

This is with reference to your News Item appearing on Page 12 of October 3 , issue of your esteemed paper, "Samooh Theatre to stage play on R N Tagore". Your correspondent says that Rabindra Nath Tagore's play "Dhak Ghar" is being staged in J&K as well as in India for the first time by the children. This is totally expression of ignorance and mis-information.

Dhak Ghar in Hindi was produced and presented by me in 1959 through Abhinova Bharati at the Samaj Sudhar Samiti Hall, Chottabazar, and all the performers were children of 9-16 years age-groups. The present Asst. Director, DD Kendra Jammu, Mr. P L Handu was acting the role of Vaid in the play. The play was repeated during the Tagore Centenary Celebrations at Srinagar during 1961-62, and the play was then directed by Dr. R L Shant.

Mr. R N Tagore himself presented the play in Bengali. The role of Amal and Sadhu have to be acted by children. A number of performances of this play by children have been given by different groups in different regional languages in India.

I have been reading your esteemed paper for the last ten years now and find that it has become a habit with some Cultural Institutions to add words 'For the First Time' while issuing Press Notes concerning their activities. Unfortunately such news in floated without going through the Annual Reports of their Institutions. One of the Institutions being State Cultural Academy which has been published its Annual Reports annually since 1961 and gave up the practice after 1986-87 after its autonomous character came under a dark shadow.
