No scope for Pak
duplicity
Sir,
Just two days
after the terrorist attack on America's World
Trade Centre and the Pentagon, Secretary of State
Colin L Powell telephoned Pakistan's president
General Parvez Musharraf to present to him with a
list of action the US administration would like
him to take for bringing Osama-bin Laden to
justice.
Sensing the grave
nature of the events which took place in New York
on the 11th September General Musharraf
immediately offered unstinted support to USA to
fight against the terrorists and to assist in its
efforts to track down the most dangerous man in
the world: Osama-bin-Laden. Fearing that Pakistan
itself could become the foremost target of the
welled up wrath of the "wounded lion"
that America today is, the General has agreed to
all the demands including providing basis on Pak
soil, closing its border with Afghanistan and
supplying all the information it has about
Osama-bin Laden.
However, it is
easy said than done for the General. The Islamic
fundamentalist outfits in Pakistan have grown so
strong that despite strict orders from the
government to stop collecting funds for so called
jehad in Kashmir these organisation have
continued there drive openly. The Pakistan
government's order to deposit the unlicensed arms
and stop the public display of even the licensed
ones, were flouted with impunity. Finding himself
helpless in reining in the terrorist
organisations General Musharraf recently moaned
"Pakistan today is the most dangerous
country in the world".
Pakistan today is
an economic wreck. The country is ruled by
narcotic lords. The General is not only faced
with growing heat from the fundamentalists his
government's most powerful intelligence wing the
ISI too is not under his full control. There are
powerful elements in his army that are hostile to
him. But this is the time that General Parvez
Musharraf can not only save his own gaddi he can
also pull out Pakistan from the quagmire all of
which is not of his making.
The United States
of America has vowed to wage a global war to root
out terrorism completely. Pakistan itself has
been a victim of terrorist violence. For two
decades India too has terribly suffered from the
acts of cross border terrorism. The world today
is united in its resolve to wipe out the forces
of terrorism. Pakistan must join the war whole
heartedly to ensure peace and prosperity for its
coming generations and those of its neighbours
General Musharraf may have realised how that
there is no scope for duplicity as is being
indulged by Pakistan in the proxy war against
India, in training and shielding the Talibans, or
while building its nuclear arsenal with the
Chinese help.
It is now or never
for the General.
Yours etc...
