Kapil has lost interest in cricket

CHANDIGARH, Oct 7: Cricket, which was a passion to the hilt with Kapil Dev, world’s one of the best all rounders, has now lost its interest with him.

He had stopped talking about the game which took him to the dizzy heights— from the "baby of the team" during his very first itinerary to Pakistan, to become an icon. Dejected at the media hype over dragging his name in the match fixing, even though, having come out unscathed in investigations by the CBI, Kapil had been avoiding the press.

He has no rancour against those who indulged in mud sligning against him.

Although, he avoided speaking at length on the dismal performance of the Indian cricket in recent year, during a chat with this reporter at a private function here, Kapil could not hide his concern.

To pressing questions, he ultimately gave in and answer varying questions including degradation of sports and coaching of the Indian cricket team by John Write, fitness test and selection of players.

To a pointed question, the former coach preferred making no comments on the performance of individual players. "The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is the best judge. It is for the BCCI to see what changes have been brought about in the team’s performance."

He said, these days every one wants to become a cricketer. But merely holding a bat or watching a match on the TV, can not make any body a Sachin or Gavaskar. It required hard work, determination and self confidence to become a Sachin or a Gavaskar.

Kapil, however, saw no harm and as a matter of fact described it "a good beginning" when asked how he felt about the fitness test introduced by the BCCI.

According to him there were no two opinion that some of the players were selected merely on ‘sifarish’ but they fail to deliver the goods while on field. Such players don’t last for long.

He said players should not feel discouraged over their non-inclusion in the teams. The good players should concentrate on hard work and determination which ultimately paid dividends.

The sector 16 Cricket Stadium in the city, where he learnt the abc of the game, under the coaching of Daronachayara Desh Prem Azad no more attracts him. Earlier it was a "Mecca" for him. Whenever, the Haryana hurrican visited the city, he made it a point to visit the stadium and teach the intracacies of the game to the hordes of youngsters.

Even during his current stay in the city, for participation in the Samarvir Sahi Golf Tournament commencing Tuesday, he avoided talking cricket to the students of a school which he visited to meet the son of a Kargil martyr, adopted by him for his education. All he told the students was to concentrate on what they wish to achieve.

When told how the youngsters feel dejected over his hanging the gloves, Kapil said I am like a student, who after saying goodbye to a school never looked back at it again. Whatever I did or achieved for the game of cricket is well known and I am fully satisfied.

The former skipper, presently concentrating his attention on the golf which, according him, was his second innings. "Golf is now a passion for me. How, I come out in this game only time will tell", he quipped when asked about his performance in his new venture.

Kapil, however, came out openly on the degradation of sports in the country. When asked how he felt about different sport bodies and organisations being surrounding by controversies, he shot back: if you make a person, without a law degree, to sit on the chair of a judge, what else you can exepct from him?

Kapil, on the poor performance of players at the international events, said: Every one wants the players to win gold medals but no one has ever thought of the facilities to be provided to them. The sports authorities, that be, were little concerned towards development of the sports and problems of the sportspersons, he added.

"It is for the Sports Ministry to answer when asked whether the country lacked talented teachers in imparting coaching to the players? according to him, India instead of becoming a country of the sports, had become a country of literates, doctors and engineers. More attention, he bemoaned, was being paid to the education than the sports. The children in this country, despite having a talent, had no right to chose sports as their career. They are forced to take to careers, even though those might not be of their liking.

He expressed his serious concern over total absence of medical experts in sports in India. "This is very unfortunate that a country like England which is of the size of punjab had more than 2,000 specialists, India does not have even two such doctors."

He said it was really unfortunate that if a player gets hurt while in action, even for small treatment he had to go abroad.

He said that it took minimum three weeks for a player to recover from his injuries whereas in foreign countries injured players return to the game within three to four days of medical treatment.

Kapil’s advice to the upcoming players was "not to take to sports as a commercial aspect. Instead they should work for the country’s honour."

The uncrowned king of cricket when asked about the dream team as enunciated by late Sir Bradman in his book said: is it necessary that whatever he(Bradman) did or any other player did, I too copy him.

Kapil, for the present has no intention to join politics. According to him even while staying away from the politics, much could be done for the country. I have kept the country’s interests and honour above every thing else. "Whatever, I did in the past, doing at present or would be doing in future would be in the larger interests of my motherland and its honour."

Asked whether he intended to write any book on his past and present experiences, Kapil smilingly said he would prefer not to say anything at present. What I do or write, will be before the people of the country. (UNI)
