Ganguly, Tendulkar put India on top

JOHANNESBURG, Oct 5: Brilliant centuries by captain Saurav Ganguly and Sachin Tendulkar, in contrasting styles and circumstances, saw India make a perfect start in the Triangular one-day series as they scored a commanding 279 for five in the opening match against South Africa here today.

Ganguly and Tendulkar, doubtful for this game till the other day, left their injury worries back and commandeered their team to the highest total at the wanderers.

The decision of the South African captain Shaun Pollock to put India in to bat proved to be a blessing in disguise for the visitors with Ganguly saying he too wanted to make the same choice.

The Indian batsmen showed hardly any discomfort on a hard and bouncy track with five seamers bowling in tandem.

In fact, with the ball coming nicely on to the bat, both Ganguly and Tendulkar found it easy to negotiate an all-pace attack, the quick outfield only helped their cause with balls racing to the boundaries.

Ganguly, who was going through a horrid time with the bat recently, silenced his critics with an emphatic 127 that came off just 125 balls and was studded with 14 fours and five sixes.

In contrast, Tendulkar, returning to international cricket after missing the tour to Sri Lanka due to a toe injury, played a more composed innings and batted almost through the innings for his 30th one-day century. He was out for 101 immediately after reaching the milestone.

In the process, the duo raised their 14th century partnership, just one away from the world record 15 by the West Indian pair of Desmond Haynes and Gordon Greenidge, and also recorded the highest opening wicket stand for India against South Africa bettering their own previous best of 153.

The signs were ominous right from the very first ball which Ganguly elegantly drove through the covers for a four. That just started the run flow with Ganguly unleashing a flurry of boundaries to give india a flying start.

Tendulkar, on the other hand, was content on working the ball around for singles and twos though he too got his mandatory fours in the earlier part of the innings.

Both had their share of luck with Ganguly being dropped once and Tendulkar twice. Tendulkar was let off on 11 by Lance Klusener at first slip when he went for a slash off Jacques Kallis with the total on 45. Later, Andrew Nel grounded a caught and bowled chance of the master batsman when he was on 68.

Ganguly, who looked in an attacking mood, mistimed a hook off Kallis that flew to the third-man area but Justin Kemp was not able to hold on to the catch. He had made just 43 at that time and South Africa, who were hardly at their best in the field, were left rueing their misses.

Ganguly traded in boundaries for the most part of his innings hitting nine of them in his first fifty which came off a gentle tap for a single to the third-man off Kallis. With his aggressive knock, Ganguly also ensured that the scoring rate always hovered around five runs an over.

Ganguly suffered a slight lapse of concentration in the sixties when he tried to hit every ball out of the ground after having already hit a six of Makhaya Ntini in the 22nd over. That period saw him living dangerously but better sense soon prevailed and he restrained his insticts.

He did hit four more sixes though, all of them in the same region to race into his nineties. He glided Klusener to the third man boundary to bring up his 17th one-day hundred. In the same over, Tendulkar reached his fifty with a single.

Ganguly, who scored a number of runs in the third-man region taking full use of the absence of a slip, finally gave a high catch to wicketkeeper Mark Boucher off the bowling of Justin Kemp.

The opening pair had put 193 runs and laid a solid foundation for a huge score. However, though a total of beyond 300 looked quite a possibility at this time, it couldn’t be achieved as India lost some more wickets in quick succession.

Rahul Dravid holed out to Neil McKenzie while attempting a hook shot off Nel after making just one run. Yuvraj Singh (14) and Birendra Sehwag (5) got out trying to accelerate the pace of scoring in the final overs.

However, Tendulkar stuck to his ends with a firm resolve. The maestro, who was quite subdued during Ganguly’s presence, got active after his partner left the scene.

However, he still scored mainly through singles and twos and generally avoided the aerial route. Just eight boundaries in an innings of 101 was quite uncharacteristic of Tendulkar but he did ensure that his team reach a good total and not collapse in a heap.

Tendulkar leg glanced Nel for fours at fine leg boundaries twice in the 44th over to reach 98 and completed his hundred in the next over with a two off Klusener. The very next ball he was out, caught by Herschelle Gibbs, when he went for a big hit but couldn’t time it properly.

Shiv Sunder Das, who has been very consistent as an opener in the test matches, came out to bat for the first time in a one-day international at a critical time when he was required to hit every ball.

He remained unbeaten on five in the company of Ajit Agarkar who was not out on 12. (PTI)

Steve Waugh determined to keep on playing

SYDNEY, Oct 5: Australian cricket captain Steve Waugh said he had no intention of retiring despite being diagnosed with the potentially fatal condition deep vein thrombosis.

"Everyone keeps writing me off with the body and how much longer I am going to last," Waugh told reporters on Friday.

"But the truth of the matter is that while everyone keeps writing that, it makes me more determined to keep playing."

Earlier this week, Waugh confirmed he was receiving daily medication to thin his blood after being diagnosed with "economy class syndrome".

The 36-year-old developed a blood clot in his lower left leg when he tore a calf muscle during the third Ashes test against England, but returned to score a courageous unbeaten century in the fifth match of the series.

Despite his renowned fighting qualities, Waugh’s latest bout of illness has led to speculation he might quit — a suggestion that makes him bristle.

"If you want me to keep playing, keep writing me off because I enjoy that," he said."

The Australians will host New Zealand and South Africa in separate three-test series later this year, with the contest against the proteas likely to determine the number one test ranking.

The Australians are currently number one in the world, but the South Africans could overtake them.

"Their profile hasn’t been as high as ours but they are a side that gets the job done and are really hard to beat," Waugh said.

"If we beat those guys, then I guess we can say to everyone we are the number one side in the world. I think until we beat them, then there’s still a bit of conjecture as to who is number one." (REUTERS)

Hewitt hits back to reach Japan Open semifinals

TOKYO, Oct 5: Top seed Lleyton Hewitt was tested by Spaniard Francisco Clavet today, but the US Open champion came through in three sets to reach the semifinals of the Japan Open Tennis Championships.

In the women’s draw, top seed Monica Seles overcame a sore ankle to beat Japan’s Ai Sugiyama 7-5 6-4 and reach the final, where she will play second seed Tamarine Tanasugarn of Thailand or eighth-seeded South African Joannette Kruger.

Hewitt, who arrived in Japan after leading Australia to a third straight Davis Cup final, came from a set down to beat the eighth-seeded Clavet 4-6 6-4 6-2 in a shade under two hours at Tokyo’s Ariake Colosseum.

It took Hewitt until the final set to find the range on his groundstrokes, but when he did the 20-year-old from Adelaide unleashed some crunching service returns to break Clavet twice.

"I was going for shots that weren’t on in the first set, but then I went back to basics and started going for the right balls," said Hewitt, who completed proceedings with a trademark forehand pass on his second match-point.

The world number three will face unseeded James Blake, his opponent when the Australian allegedly made racist remarks in his second-round match against the American at the U S Open, in Saturday’s semifinal.

Blake upset seventh seed Marcelo Rios with a 4-6 6-4 6-1 victory in the day’s first quarter-final, 24 hours after knocking out fourth seed Jonas Bjorkman.

Rios’s chances of back-to-back titles went up in smoke as the 25-year-old Chilean’s game suddenly deserted him after clinching the first set.

The former world number one, who won the Hong Kong Open on Sunday, committed a string of unforced errors, particularly on his forehand, and was forced to save four match-points on serve to avoid a final-set whitewash.

Blake, currently ranked 109th in the world, eventually sealed victory on his fifth match-point after one hour, 39 minutes to set up the chance of revenge against Hewitt.

Blake insisted, though, that the U S Open controversy was water under the bridge.

"It’s always fun to avenge a loss. It would be unbelievable to beat the U S Champion and a Davis Cup hero," said the 21-year-old New Yorker. "There is no residual feeling. We talked in the locker room and left it all in New York."

Seles called an injury time-out after twisting her right ankle in the first set, which the American took 7-5 after coming back from 5-4 down with Sugiyama on serve.

After trading breaks with the third-seeded Sugiyama in the second set, seles turned up the pressure on her returns and broke to love in the 10th game to take the match in one hour, 43 minutes.

"I turned my ankle over and it worried me at first because I couldn’t put any weight on it. But the trainer did a fantastic job and I was just happy to pull it out in two sets," said the winner of nine Grand Slams. (REUTERS)

Mukesh, Gaurav lead Sher-e-Kashmir Golf

SRINAGAR, Oct 5: Mukesh Kumar moved in to a position of winning back-to-back titles on the Hero Honda Indian Golf tour when he shot a four-under 68 to join overnight leader Gaurav Ghei on top of the leaderboard at the halfway stage of the Rs 15-lakh Sher-e-Kashmir Open, here today.

Ghei added a two-under 70 to his 68 yesterday and was at six-under 138, the same as Mukesh. Jyoti Randhawa shot his second successive two-under 70 to move up to tied third place at four-under 140 along with Jaiveer Virk, who returned a level-par 72 card .

The cut was applied at 14-over 158 and 51 pros made it to the third round.

Mukesh Kumar, played only two bad shots during the entire round and was unlucky to be penalized with bogeys. On the par-5 10th, he hit his second shot into the adjoining Marshy land, and on the par-5 14th, he sent a powerful sand wedge third shot from 70 yards over the green and missed his chip-putt.

It is frustrating to get bogeys where I should have made birdies. But if I forget those two holes, I putted very well and missed nothing that I could put within 12 feet of the pin. Putting was the key today, said the mhow-based player who required 27 putts to complete the round.

There was a stage in the round where Mukesh made six birdies in a stretch of nine holes between the seventh and 15th and all resulting in putts in the range of eight to ten feet.

Ghei, was looking forward to breaking the so called drought at his in-laws town here. My confidence is coming back slowly and the ist round yesterday was a great morale booster. I am feeling good about about my swing after many days, in amateurs section, Ghalib Shah shot a 77 on day-two to take a two-stroke lead over Ashfaq Ahmed.

However, Shah would not be eligible for the top-prize as he is under the one-year notice period of reverting to amateur status.

Scores: (after 36 holes): 138-Mukesh Kumar (70, 68) Gaurav Ghei (68, 70) 140-Jyoti Randhawa (70,70), Jaiveer Virk (68, 72) 141-Digvijay Singh (73, 68), Monish Bindra (72, 69), Rafiq Ali (71, 70), Shamim Khan (71, 70) 142-Rahul Ganapathy (72,70), Feroz Ali (71,71) 143-Vinod Kumar (72, 71), Vijay Kumar (70,73), Rohtas Singh (70,73) 144-Sanjay Kumar (73, 71).
