Speed merchants lined up against Indians

BENONI (Johannesburg), Oct 2: The visiting Indians would face their first real test of strength when they take on a battery of fast bowlers in the match against South Africa ‘A’ here tomorrow.

With almost all the Indian batsmen getting a decent hit in the carnival match against Nicky Oppenheimer XI at Randjesfontein yesterday, the visitors would obviously be in a positive frame of mind.

Tomorrow’s game would give the Indians an opportunity to test their skills on a fast and bouncy turf against some quality fast bowling of up-and-coming South African stars. Even with the late withdrawal of Eastern Province’s Mfuneko Ngam, the band of Northern’s captain Gerald Dros, Jon Kent, Boland swing bowler Charl Langeveld and international reject Roger Telemachus is expected to scrutinise Indian batsmen closely.

Having already seen Mornantu Hayward, Albie Morkel and Garnett Krugger in yesterday’s match, the Indians would thus have seen almost the entire crop of South Africa reserve pace talent ahead of the Triangular one-day series starting on Friday.

For the Indians, the inclusion of Shiv Sunder Das in the one-day squad should be a healthy proposition. The diminutive Orissa youngster played a fine innings of 59 yesterday before retiring and it is a tribute to his relentless quest for improvement that he has eased into the one-day format too. Another good knock tomorrow could see him making his one-day debut in the tri-series.

It was nice to see every Indian batsman having a profitable stay in the middle yesterday. Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid, two of the most successful Indian batsmen on South Africa pitches, helped themselves to good scores and even captain Saurav Ganguly, who has been woefully short of runs for some time, timed the ball well in his 34-run knock.

The Indian bowlers, who went for a hammering on the batsmen friendly track yesterday, would get a more helpful pitch tomorrow and they would surely like to get into a rhythm before the one-dayers.

Anil Kumble yesterday showed the long lay-off from international cricket had not rusted his talent at all and the exciting prospect of his bowling in tandem with off-spinner Harbhajan Singh might be opted for tomorrow.

The hosts have suffered a setback with the pull-out of Ngam who made his debut against New Zealand last year. He had a shoulder surgery earlier this year and was wrapped in the proverbial cotton wool ever since. Ngam bowls with great pace, on occasions clocking 150 kmph, and also has the ability to swing the ball both ways.

It is understood that Ngam, who has fought his way back from leg and back stress fractures, and a damaged shoulder in recent years, was included in tomorrow’s team by the national selectors without sufficient consultation with the medical team supervising his rehabilitation.

South African national squad physiotherapist Craig Smith would not confirm this, but said he was keen that Ngam should play a few four-day games for his province before returning to the top level.

"It makes no sense to risk him in a one-day game now, when his future is pretty much seen in the test arena. He might be fit, but there is the matter of confidence and comfort, which he can get by coming through a couple of four-day provincial games first," said Smith.

The array of fast bowlers thrown at the Indians is aimed at checking the nuts and bolts of visitors’ batting machine ahead of the Triangular series.

Viewed from another perspective, it is also aimed at giving critical exposure to several players trying to break into what has looked like an impregnable national squad.

Boeta Dippenaar, Justin Kemp and Justin Ontong, all part of the national squad, are also in the team. "We not only want the players to remain match-fit, we also want to ensure that South Africa field its strongest possible `A’ side against India," declared Rushdie Magiet, the convenor of national selectors.

Kemp has battled to establish a regular place in a team which already has three world class allrounders in Shaun Pollock, Jacques Kallis and Lance Klusener. Bowling at a useful pace and landing the ball on the spot just about every time, kemp - a big man who also hits the ball a long way - is said to be the one who is keeping Klusener on his toes.

The concern for higher honours is no less genuine for batsmen. Western Province left-hander Graeme smith who made 54 against tourists yesterday has started to wonder if he would ever get a chance given the exploits of Gary Kirsten. (PTI)

Tendulkar, Ganguly to miss today’s match

BENONI (Johannesburg), Oct 2: India’s two top batsmen Sachin Tendulkar and captain Saurav Ganguly have pulled out of tomorrow’s day-night encounter against South Africa ‘A’ here with injuries.

While Ganguly is recovering from a swollen index finger in his right hand, Tendulkar was apparently having a " hint of discomfort" in his right foot after six-seven hours on the field, team manager Mahendra Bhargava said tonight.

Tendulkar went to his pysiotherapist Mark Fergusson to have the inner sole of his right shoe readjusted.

However, both will be available for the opening one-day international against South Africa at the Wanderers on Friday, team sources said.

"The inner sole of Tendulkar’s shoe has been readjusted. He has been advised to practice with it before going into a match. But he should be alright for Friday’s game," Bhargava said.

Tendulkar himself allayed any fear, stating that he just wanted to make sure that nothing untoward happened to him on the tour in the coming days.

"It was a kind of precautionary visit (to the physiotherapist), nothing to worry about," Tendulkar said before joining the team’s practice session mid-way at the Wanderers this afternoon.

The master batsman looked in terrific form against Nicky Oppenheimer XI at Randjesfontein yesterday before being adjudged leg-before in a doubtful decision.

Ganguly was hit by a lifting delivery during the game. Although he did not have any problems during the match, his right index finger swelled up by night. An X-ray was taken today morning.

"There is nothing to be scared of," Ganguly said.

Confirming this, team physio Andrew Leipus said "Ganguly should be alright by Friday."

"He will be given treatment for the swelling to subside," he said. (PTI)

Laloo to move court if BCCI derecognises BCA

PATNA, Oct 2: Bihar Cricket Association president, Laloo Prasad Yadav today said he would seek legal options if there was any move to derecognise his organisation by the newly elected Board of Control for Cricket in India.

Yadav however said he had not received any official communique from BCCI president Jagmohan Dalmiya reversing the decision of his predecessor A C Muthiah, who had allowed the Laloo Prasad led BCA to cast its vote in the election to the members of BCCI on September 29.

"It is indeed ridiculous that first you give recognition to an association, allow it to cast vote and then derecognise the association if it doesn’t cast lot in favour of somebody", Yadav, also RJD chief, told reporters here.

"There is a sinister campaign to oust me from the BCA panel... It will be an insult to BCA and also to the people of Bihar if the decision with regard to affiliation of Bihar Cricket Association is reversed", Yadav told reporters here.

The BCCI president Dalmiya had yesterday announced to set up two committees within a couple of days to oversee and organise cricket matches in Bihar. One committee would organise matches while the other would be formed for team selection so that cricketing activities were not affected, Dalmiya had said.

Yadav said if BCA was derecognised then Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh Cricket Associations would also have to be derecognised as the two states too were bifurcated. (PTI)

Donald left out of SA squad

JOHANNESBURG, Oct 2: Speedster Allan Donald has been left out of the 12-member South African squad, announced today, for the first two matches of the Triangular one-day series with India and Kenya starting here on Friday.

All the 12 players were part of the South African team that blanked Zimbabwe 3-0 in a one-day series recently.

Nicky Boje is the another notable exclusion from the side that will play against India here on Friday and Kenya in Benoni on Sunday.

Both Donald and Boje missed the Zimbabwe tour due to injuries and convenor of national selectors Rushdi Magiet said they had been left out because they were short of match practice. Boje is also yet to recover completely from a knee injury.

Boeta Dippenaar too failed to make it to the squad after a disappointing tour of Zimbabwe.

The squad: Shaun Pollock (captain), Gary Kirsten, Herschelle Gibbs, Jacques Kallis, Neil McKenzie, Jonty Rhodes, Lance Klusener, Mark Boucher, Justin Kemp, Claude Hendersdon, Makhaya Ntini, Andre Nel. (PTI)
