Excelsior Correspondent JAMMU, Sept 30: Deciding not to tolerate any more dictatorship of Chief Minister Dr Farooq Abdullah and Power Minister Mr Surjeet Singh Slathia, various business bodies, students organisations and political parties have taken a stand to start wide-spread agitation to send a clear signal to the Government that no more step-motherly treatment would be tolerated especially with regard to increased power curtailment in Jammu region. The resentment and anguish over the Governments additional power cut move ran high among the students community and businessman who feel they were being victimised by the Government and taken for granted. Both (students community and businessmen) said that their patience has exhausted and they will not allow Government to play with the sentiments of Jammuites anymore. President of Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Mr Ram Sahai said that the despite recovering 80 percent revenue from the Jammu province in the shape of power tariff the Government has indulged into shattering the economy of this region instead of providing any succor. "The recovery of merger 20 percent power tariff from the Valley that too after providing electricity without power cuts has exposed Governments height of step-motherly treatment towards Jammu region", he said, adding despite being aware of the fact that resentment was running high among the Jammu people due to increase in power cuts from 5 to seven and half hour, it has enforced 9 hours power curtailment which shows that Government has taken the Jammu people for granted. Launching scathing attack on Chief Minister Dr Farooq Abdullah, he said that on one side he has been asking the people to go in private enterprises for employment and on the other hand he has been forcing the industrialists to close down their industries. "Till today, we could not understand the industrial policy of the State Government which instead of giving boost to industries was creating hurdles in their way of progress due to its wrong policies", he said. "Enough is enough. We will not tolerate any more dictatorship and launch large scale agitation to prove that the Government can not play with the Jammuites", he made it clear and said that within a weeks time Chamber with the active support of all trade bodies and political parties will start wide-spread agitation to protest against the step-motherly treatment being given to Jammu businessmen and students community. President of Bari-Brahamana Industries Association, Mr B M Sharma said that due to the anti-industry policies of the State Government, some industrialists have already left the State and a large number of others are planning to follow the suit. "The Government was seemingly not bothered about the people and making them to cry loudly", he said. He further said that what is the fun of staying here when Government is not bothered about the decreasing trend in our production. "Not even a single industry is able to increase production due to wrong policies of the Government", he said, adding there has been 15 to 20 percent fall in the production of big industries and 50 to 60 percent fall in small scale units. About the future course of action, he made it clear that they have left with two options either to leave the state or stop paying tariff. State Secretary of ABVP Mr Vivek Sharma said that the Chief Minister Dr Farooq Abdullah could not tolerate the progress of Jammu region that is why he is resorting to such steps. He saw the further increase in power-curtailment as a step to victimise the students community and made it clear that to force the Government to reduce the power-cuts ABVP is also planning to launch agitation. Mr Rajinder Singh Jamwal, president of JJSF said that student community is the worst sufferer of the increase in power-cuts as they can not properly study in the absence of electricity. "What Government wants to convey to us by resorting to such steps is out of our knowledge", he said, adding now this Government has crossed all the limits of exploiting Jammuites. "We are discussing the issue with different students organisations and political parties to reach to a common platform to start agitation at a larger scale to make it clear to the Government that Jammuites are not going to tolerate any more dictatorship. Leaders of various political parties like Surinder Singh (PDP), Nirmal Singh (BJP), Raman Bhalla (Congress) and Rajeev Chunni (BJP) expressed resentment over the step of the Government and said that it is high time to prove to Government that Jammu people are not going to tolerate its step-motherly treatment. |

Tarigami views ban on SIMI as dubious Excelsior Correspondent SRINAGAR, Sept. 30: State Secretary of Communist Party of India (Marxist), Mohammad Yusuf Tarigami, has questioned the manner of imposing ban on the Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI). In a statement here today, Tarigami said that the imposition of ban on SIMI had raised a host of doubts among the democratic and secular sections of the Indian polity. He urged the Central Government to signify the reasons with material evidence. Withholding of material, which compelled the Government to invoke ban, had aroused apprehensions that the whole process could be politically-motivated, Tarigami said. According to him, it is significant that the ban has been slapped on SIMI when BJP was deperately looking for stunts to manipulate the UP polls. Tarigami said that killing of three youth in Police firing in Lucknow had further vitiated the atmosphere, creating suspicions in the public mind that the material seized could be manipulated. He said that the action was, prima facie, biased and dubious as, in spite of enough material ban had not been imposed on the communal outfits like Bajrang Dal, which has been blatantly involved in killing members of the minority community. Instead, the Government has gratuitously opted to maintain silence, he said. The CPI(M) leader expressed his apprehensions that the "communal utterances" of the BJP leadership, partcilarly the UP Chief Minister Rajnath Singh, were likely to create genuine apprehensions among the minorities. He feared that the ban in dubious manner would further alienate the people in Kashmir who, according to him, have been watching the anti-minority policies of the BJP-led government at the Centre. |
