South Africa cruise to clean sweep HARARE, Sept 30: South Africa juggled their batting order to give fringe players a chance but still cruised to a six-wicket win in the third and final one-day international against Zimbabwe at Harare Sports Club today. It completed a crushing 3-0 series win for South Africa. But stand-in Zimbabwe captain Guy Whittall said he believed his side could lift their game in a five-match series against England which starts at the same venue wednesday. "Weve had a very hard month (against South Africa) but sometimes after playing a very good side you come out better when you play against a weaker side, as in England," said Whittall. Neil McKenzie played an anchor innings of 69 not out as South Africa overhauled a modest Zimbabwe total of 184 for six with nine overs to spare. "They bowled very well and backed it up with superb fielding," said Whittall as he acknowledged that Zimbabwes chances plummetted in the first hour of the match, when they could score only 35 runs in the first 15 overs, while the ball was still hard and fielding restrictions were in place. South Africa made three changes to the side that won the opening two games by 153 and 148 runs. Regular opening batsman Gary Kirsten was rested, while Jacques Kallis and Jonty Rhodes, who both starred in the first two games, were pushed down the batting order. Herschelle Gibbs, who was named man of the series, gave South Africa another flying start, hammering nine fours in an innings of 39 off 31 balls. Gibbs and Boeta Dippenaar put on 64 in 10 overs for the first wicket but three wickets fell in quick succession, all to dubious LBW decisions. Mckenzie and the inexperienced Justin Ontong scored slowly as they restored South Africas equilibrium and McKenzie took 33 balls to make his first four runs. The pair put on 64, with ontong playing some fine strokes before he was out for 32. After his slow start, McKenzies 69 was made off 86 balls with 10 fours. He finished the match in style by hitting four boundaries in an over from leg-spinner Paul Strang. Zimbabwe batted first for the only time in the series after Whittall won the toss. But the home side found scoring difficult on a slow, dry pitch against accurate bowling and outstanding ground fielding. Stuart Carlisle and Alistair Campbell put on 67 for the second wicket but used up more than 21 overs. The match was played on a newly-prepared pitch after it was decided that the surface used for the second international yesterday was not suitable. The new pitch, though, showed many of the same charactristics with the ball bouncing awkwardly and slowly. South Africas new ball bowlers, skipper Shaun Pollock and Justin Kemp, gave the Zimbabwe batsmen virtually nothing to hit. Carlisle made 51 off 100 balls with four boundaries, while Campbell took 77 balls to make 40. Dion Ebrahim and Grant Flower were able to lift the tempo in a fifth wicket stand of 54 in 10.5 overs but were unable to take full command. Dippenaar was outstanding in the field, making a sensational diving save, pulling off a run-out and holding a catch in the deep off the last ball of the innings. (AFP) |
Indians ready for tours first test JOHANNESBURG, Sept 30: Almost sure of a victory, the visiting Indian cricketers would nevertheless be wary of drawing too many conclusions from their tour opening match against Nicky Oppenheimer XI set at Mining Families private ground at Randjesfontein tomorrow. This traditional opening fixture of the South African season is more of a social rather than a cricketing occasion, full of niceties and laced with old-world charm, where a handful of select invitees are treated to a private show of skills by the visiting team. It is easy to see how this fixture of unfurling the cricket season has become a tradition in South Africa. Much of it is inspired by practice in England and Australia, who stage their own versions of such games in Norfolk XI and Prime Ministers XI respectively, and who along with South Africa are three oldest test playing nations. The choice for India in this match is to either try out their possible eleven ahead of the sterner battles or to give the fringe players a chance to get into the swing of things. There should be little doubt about Indias chances to win the game even with reserves, though the desire to check out on the form and fitness of the main stars would be too tempting for skipper Saurav Ganguly to ignore. Sharjah series planned with higher prize money SHARJAH, Sept 30: New Zealand, Pakistan and Sri Lanka are to feature in a Triangular series with increased prize money at the desert venue, tentatively scheduled for April 10-19 next year. Cricketers Benefit Fund Series (CBFS), the organisers of bi-annual tournaments in Sharjah, are also planning to invite a fourth team "to make the event more interesting and exciting", chief executive Zahid Noorani said. "The fourth team is on our mind. Lets see how things take shape," Noorani said. The CBFS has already raised the prize money from 100,000 dollars to 250,000 dollars for a tri-nation event next month between Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe. "The prize money will remain the same for the April tournament," Noorani said. "If the fourth team is confirmed then it will be different." Noorani congratulated Jagmohan Dalmiya on his election as president of the Indian Cricket Board yesterday. "It is good for both world and Asian cricket. "Dalmiya is a great administrator and we appreciate his efforts in globalising the game during his tenure as the ICC (International Cricket Council) chief," Noorani said. Noorani, however, side-stepped a query regarding Indias participation in the Sharjah events. "All I can say is that CBFS have had enjoyed a great relationship with Dalmiya and its bound to grow further with his election." India were refused permission by their Government to play in a series in Sharjah last April involving Pakistan. Relations between the two countries have been strained by a long-running dispute over the Himalayan region of Kashmir. (REUTERS) |
