Select candidates from Dachhan

Sir,

Illaqa Dachhan is the remotest area of District Doda. After independence, India made a rapid socio ecnomic development. But it is very pity that people who dwell in this area still remain cut of from rest of the country. Every now and then our cry for redressal of our problems fell on deaf ears of the Government authorities. Government is silent and ever neglecting the area.

Despite backwardness and hardships the youth of this far flung area are well qualified and have a keen desire to serve as teachers in their localities. But at the time of selection we are discriminated. Not a single candidate from this area has found place in the teachers list that was released some one month ago.

It seems that government is playing with the aspirations of educated youth. On the other hand candidates appointed as teachers from other areas never perform their duties in this remotest area due to terror of militancy.

So, the Chief Minister Dr. Farooq Abdullah and his cabinet is requested to consider candidates from this area for teachers posts, so that the educated youth can get a chance to serve the people of this area is particular and candidates hailing from other remote areas can also get their share in general.

Raise speed breakers

Sir,

In Jammu city traffic has been tamed for the last few days. Traffic Department deserves praise from the public of Jammu. But it may be essential to point out here that Gandhi Nagar and Shastri Nagar seem to be immune to these traffic rules and that is why there is no system of Matador driving, barring a few excellent drivers, as one Matador rushes behind the other in pursuit of one passenger and in the process the scooter drivers or pedestrians suffer injuries. These Matador drivers ply their vehicles at break-neck speed with music on at the pitch of its voice thus polluting the atmosphere and thus also making it inconvenient for the old and the infirm passengers to gasp for breath. They cannot make their voice heard by the drivers on a number of occasions because of loud music.

Every day almost at Last Morh Gandhi Nagar or near about there are two or three accidents causing injuries to either Scooter driver or pedestrain. Therefore, I would request the concerned authorities to bring Gandhi Nagar as well as Shastri Nagar also under rules like city and Post Some Effective Traffic Persons to man the last Morh Road and see for themselves the way matadors are plied thereon especially from Baba Dudhadhari Temple upto Mahajan Medical Shop. From the place onward, there are speed breakers mounted on the bringing the rushing matadors and other vehicles almost to a grinding halt.

Therefore, there is no need to traffic persons on the back side of Apsara road, Speed breakers also need to be mounted right from Dudhadhari Temple upto the Mahajan Medical Shop in order to avoid accidents or mishappenings which have almost become a routine affair.

It is only when incidents begin to form a pattern and likely to have repercussions beyond the immediate scene that we pay special attention to them and are watchful of the consequences. Therefore, Speed Breakers need be raised/mounted on the road from Dudhadhari Temple upto Mahajan Medical shop to avoid mishappenings/accidents.

Hurriyat and elections

Sir,

Mr. Fazal Mehmood in his article "Hurriyat leaders have to prove their bonafides" (Daily Excelsior 23) has advised the Hurriyat leaders to take part in the State Assembly elections due next year. The advice is sound but addressed to wrong quarters.

Hurriyat conference is a conglomerate of 23 parties. Of them nearly eight are political ones while the rest are militant outfits. Of the eight political groups only two leaders Syed Geelani and Abdul Lone have taken part in the assembly elections till 1987. While Mr. Geelani took part in the elections as Jammat Islami candidate from Sopore, Mr. Lone changed parties but contested only from either Handwara or Karnah constituency. These leaders do not enjoy any electoral support beyond these constituencies.

Another Hurriyat leader Moulvi Omar Farooq become leader due to circumstances. His party Awami Action Committee never participated in the elections though his father late Moulvi Farooq extended his party's support to Janta Party in 1977.

Since the eruption of militancy in the Valley these leaders have been per force dancing to the tune of the militants and the ISI. This occupation has proved to be lucrative for them as they are handsomely awarded by Pakistan's ISI for drum beating the slogan of ''liberation of Kashmir" with the result they have become financially rich. These facts are well known to the people. These leaders know that participation in the electoral battle in defiance to the wishes of their masters would be fatal for them.
