Fundamentalism biggest threat to National
Integration: Kamal

Excelsior Correspondent

JAMMU, Nov 24: The Industries and Commerce Minister, Dr. Mustafa Kamal today cautioned the people against the dangers of fundamentalism looming large on the Nation and called for strengthening the bonds of communal harmony and national integration.

"Forces of fundamentalism are still active and always look out for an opportunity to disintegrate the country after 50 years of independence and the onus lies on the youth in particular to rise to the occasion to preserve the hard won freedom", Dr. Kamal said at a function organized in connection with the National Integration Week at New Millennium National College of Education, Sainik Colony near here today.

He said advocates of trifurcation of J&K State are in disguise playing in the hands of fundamentalist forces, which is a biggest threat to the national integration. He said National Conference has always pleaded the cause of secularism and it was keeping pace with this commitment that great visionary leader, Sher-i-Kashmir Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah rejected the 2-Nation theory based on religious lines and acceded to the Indian Union on the basis of ideological cohesion. He said Sher-i-Kashmir kept the candle of communal harmony alight at the time of partition in 1947 when the whole country was burning in the flames of communal frenzy. He said mutual brotherhood and unity in diversity are the hallmark of our 5000 years old civilization and ethos. He stressed the need for uprooting the trends of religious extremism to preserve the unity and integrity of the country.

Dr. Kamal also urged for a strong Central back up support to the nationalist forces in J&K to defeat the evil designs of subversive elements. He said J&K is presently exposed to three biggest challenges posed by the fundamentalism, terrorism and forces hell bent to disintegrate the State on regional basis.

The Minister also paid rich tributes to Late Mrs. Indira Gandhi whose 84th birth anniversary coincides with the National Integration Week. He also lauded the management of the college for opening the educational institute in private sector and said private sector is playing a significant role in the field of education in J&K.

Mr. Ram Paul on this occasion urged for preserving the secular character in the J&K and recounted the efforts made by Sheri Kashmir, Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah and Madr-e-Mehrban, Begum Akbar Jehan in particular for strengthening communal harmony and brotherhood in the, otherwise multi religious, multi lingual and multi regional State. He said need of the hour was to inculcate the spirit of mutual trust, faith, love and tolerance adding these principles would go a long way to preserve the national unity. He called upon the youth to contribute their might in building a strong Nation.

A seminar on the theme of "National Integration and Role of the Youth" was also held on the occasion.

The students of the college and artists of the Cultural Unit of State Information Department presented a variety cultural programme on the occasion, which enthralled the audience. HC directs JU to circulate instructions on admission

Excelsior Correspondent

JAMMU, Nov 24: Justice T S Doabia of the State High Court has directed the University of Jammu to circulate instructions to various private institutions for selection and admission of the candidates in professional courses.

This direction was passed in a writ petition filed by Priya Darshani Institute of Management and Science through Advocate V R Wazir, wherein it was stated that the institution is recognized and imparting training education in the discipline of MBA.

In the petition it was stated it was well within the right of the Institution to admit six students over and above the list of the candidates furnished by the University as the seats were vacant and could be filled by the Institution without reference to the University.

The stand of the University was that the students who have been admitted were those who never took part in the process of the examination. The University Counsel J P Singh referred a judgment of Supreme Court in the case of Unni Krishnan versus State of Andhra Pradesh and further submitted that until the candidate has passed the entrance test with atleast 50 per cent marks, he cannot be admitted. It was further referred to the Supreme Court judgment that no professional College shall call for application for admission separately or individually.

Justice Doabia observed that the University is, however, free to clarify the regulation if any framed in this regard if not already done. It is also clarified that the petitioner-Institute would make no selection of their won. In case they are to do it , they should first refer the matter to the University.

RAJOURI, Nov 24: She could finally express her silence after bearing horrifying experience for about six months. She could have never thought that her disability would give her acute mental tension one day.

This was the tale of a deaf and dumb girl who has been fighting within herself for about six months from the day she was raped by two youths at village Bathera under the jurisdiction of Dharamsal Police Station.

Sheela Devi, daughter of Ram Singh, who even had failed to convey to her mother that she was raped by youths of the same village when she had gone to attend nature’s call. She made hectic efforts to convey horrifying experience to her mother and invite her attention but her disability came in her way and forced her to bear all that for about six months when her family members came to know about her pregnancy.

During all these six months she passed all days and nights while fighting with herself and it was during this period she had realised that how much disabled she was. She could have never thought that those who gave her birth would not understand her tale of woes one day.

Had she not been disabled the accused could have not been at large for about six months and booked much earlier. The unfortunate parents of Sheela even felt themselves guilty conscious when they came to know that their daughter had tolerated horrying experience for about six months.

After her parents came to know about her pregnancy, they approached Block Medical Officer Sunderbani who aborted her.

Earlier, the police tried to hush up the matter but after the intervention of SDPO IPS Nitish Kumar the accused were arrested. The accused have been identified as Bhagwan Singh and Baldev Singh.

Further investigation were on in this regard and it has been apprehended that lots of other sensational details would come to light after thorough investigation of the incident.

Migration of Pandits a setback: Prof Rahi
No unanimity among Kashmiri writers on
adoption of script

Excelsior Correspondent

JAMMU, Nov 24: Divergent views were expressed by the various Kashmiri writers and poets regarding the adoption of script for Kashmiri language on the first day of two day long seminar organised by Sahitya Akademi in collaboration with Kashmiri Bhasha Evam Sampriti and J&K Academy of Art Culture and Languages at Abhinav Theatre here today.

The topic of the Seminar was "Kashir Zaban Tu Adab: Maslu Tu Hal" (Kashmiri language and literature, problems and solutions). Though the Kashmiri writers and poets in exile for last 12 years strongly advocated for the adoption of "Devnagri" as a script for the Kashmiri language, those from Valley expressed strong reservations against it.

Baring Prof Naseem Shifai from Kashmir University majority of the speakers from the Valley outrightly rejected the adoption of any script other than the "Nastaleek" for Kashmiri language in which a premier was recently released by the Chief Minister,Dr Farooq Abdullah at Srinagar.

Those who strongly opposed the introduction of the Devnagri also include Prof Zaman Azarda and G R Hasrat Gadha.

However, Prof Shifai was of the view that both scripts be adopted for the promotion of the Kashmiri language and literature.

She while participating in the discussion on the paper of Prof Shafi Shauq, Hod University of Kashmir said language is the identity of a nation.

Disagreeing that Kashmiri language was not progressive she said that it is because of its progressive character that the language survived for thousands of years.

She stressed that efforts be made that the younger generations be made aware of Kashmiri culture and history as they are not familiar with the same. She also made a dig at Kashir Channel saying that it is not representing the culture and language in a right perspective.

While reading his paper earlier, Prof Shauq said Kashmiri language has a history o thousands of years and it has a bright future ahead.

He said the decision regarding the language can not be taken by few intellectuals as Kashmiri is the language of villagers where 80 percent of the population reside.

Showing total optimism about the bright future of this language he said no body can deprive the people of it.

Rejecting that there is any contribution of the Kashmiri writers in upliftment and popularization of the language, Prof Shauq said their contribution is equallent to nil as no common Kashmiri reads these books.

He said the language is not intact because of few teachers and students of Kashmiri. He maintained that the language will not progress till fate of the people is not changed who have been supressed for years together.

He said thousands and crores of rupees spent on seminars will be useless till problems of people are not solved.

Showing no favour for the Devnagri script he said , it (script) is not anything to be worshiped and hence should not be made a bone of contention.

In his key note address Prof Rehman Rahi a renowned Kashmiri writer stressed on joining hands by the writers from Kashmir Valley and those who are in exile to find the solutions.

He said the language is a common and we should not create problems as the situation is critical at present.

He while stressing on promotion of regional languages said they are being dominated by English and even in the programmes on Radio and TV english words are being used.

He said in past the Kashmri language flourished by using the Sanskrit and Persian words and world has acknowledged it. He however, regretted that the Kashmiri writers are in deep slumber and not ready to fight the invasion of foreign languages against which the writers of other regional languages have started a crusade.

Terming the migration of the Kashmiri Pandits a great tragedy he said as they have played a great role in development of Kashmiri language, their separation has given a setback to literature and language.

He said the writers translators, musicians left the Kashmir creating a void in literary circles.

Prof Amin Kamli who presided the second session while stressing on creating a consensus on adoption of script maintaining that Devnagri script is not so simple in Kashmir as it is outside.

He said Kashmiri writers should not thrust on the problems being faced by them only but fight the cultural onslaught which is being faced at present.

However, Prof Mishal Sultanpuri, convenor Kashmiri Advisory Board Sahitya Akademi said we should not touch the contentious issues at this juncture. He blamed the bureaucrats for creating hurdles in organising seminars and other functions for the promotion of language.

He warned once they come to know that such a controversy has emerged among the literary circles they will create problems in our efforts .

He said some reservations were there on the recent decision regarding adoption of script for Kashmiri but for the better interests of language we burried them.

However the highlight of the day long seminar was the paper read by Prof Amar Malmohi on the topic problems being faced in translation of Kashmiri literature.

Prof Malmohi whose paper was full of technicalities while speaking in his usual articulate manner highlighted in detail the problems faced by the Kashmiri translators.

He regretted that being Kashmiri we do not know the Kashmiri words properly and the words being used by our elders have been discarded now.

He stressed that Kashmiri language be spoken in all the Kashmiri families by using the basic and original words of the language. He criticised the use of the words of foreign languages.

However, Prof R L Shant a renowned writer strongly advocated for the adoption of the Devnagri script for Kashmiri language saying that this is more suitable and appropriate script for the Kashmiri language than "Nastaliq".

He while maintaining that Nastaliq Script is a big handicap said that many words can not be pronounced properly while written in this script and unlike Devnagri it has many technical problems.

While taking part in discussions Mr Arjan Dev Majboor stressed on involvement of people in finding a solution to the language problem.

Mr Amin Kamli a senior poet form Kashmir who presided the second session said that the language has a link with the land and its culture and if this link cuts the language does not flourish.

He said the problem of script also started since the turmoil in Kashmir and this has happened in past when the great civilization of Egypt and Syria were dominated with the advent of Islam in Arab. However, when the Islam reached, Iran the influence of Arbic decreased and that of Persian started.

He warned that if we can not save the language from the invasion of foreign influence we will face the situation which have been faced by Egypt and Syria.

In her welcome address Mrs Rainu Mohan Bhan, Deputy Secretary Sahitya Akademi stressed on saving the mother tongue while cautioning against shifting to english.

She said the Akademi is paying good attention for upliftment of Kashmiri language but regretted that good books of the other languages are not translated in Kashmiri. She stressed on promotion of such more programmes.

During the third session seven books of Kashmiri writers were released. The "Yad Watur" of M L Aash was released by Mr Moti Lal Kemo while Dr Premi Romani’s Sangh-e-Mail" was released by Prof Rehman Rahi. Dr Shant’s book "Kashir Afsaneh Aaz teh Pageh" was released by Amin Kamli and Premnath Shad’s book "Sarav Shihool" was released by Mr Kashi Nath Baghwan.

J L Saror’s book "Pinning for Morrow"was released by Mohammed Zaman Azarda. This book has been translated by Mr R K Bharti, journalist. "Shehz Send " a book written by Makhan Lal Kanwal was released by Amin Kamli while Dr Amar Malmohi’s book "Wakhnai the Vesnai" was released by Rehman Rahi.

Dr R L Bhat a renowned writer and journalist was the comperor in the first session while Mr Makhan Lal Kanwal compered the programme in second session and Premi Romani in third session. During the third session Mrs Bimla Raina a mystic poetess of Kashmir and Prof Naseem Shifai were on dias.

Earlier Dr R L Bhat eulogized the role of Pir Panchal a social and cultural organisation headed by Ramesh Hangloo, Sanjeevani Sharda Kendra and Harmukh in promotion of Kashmiri language and literature.

The vote of thanks was presented by Mr R L Jawhar. During the second day of seminar tomorrow a Kashmir drama will be staged by national band Theatre of Vahthoora.
