Pluralistic spirit in Kashmir

Sir,

Refer to Mr. J L Koul Jalali's write up "Let Pluralistic Spirit flower in Kashmir" dated 17th November 2001.

The learned writer has missed the role of some leading central Asian Sufis in forcible proselytisation, harsh treatment of non-Muslims and promotion of Islamisation to effect religious changes in Kashmir. To buttress what I say the writer's attention is drawn to the standard chronicles of Zakhiratulmaluk, Tohfatul Ahbab and Baharistani Shahi by Muslim authors. The rishis of Kashmir vintage were a lot entirely different from the sufis of Central Asian brand. If the boundaries of distinction are not explicitly defined, the evaluation of cultural moorings as prevalent in Lalla's historical times will suffer impairment. The rishis of Kashmir were bed rocked in the vedic ethos of Kashmir and pursued the ideals of contemplation, truthfulness, asceticism and self knowledge. Lalla as a Shaiva Yogini upheld and disseminated the same ideals at a time when there was total deluge and Nand Rishi despite lot many aberrations throve on the preservation of the same indigenous ethos.

It is a misnomer that the influx of Central Asian Sufis including the one the learned writer has named paved the path for conflation of cultures and civilisational moves.

Instead it led to confrontation with the well founded cultural pattern and world view of indigenous variety. The vedantic and Buddhist influences on the sufis of central Asian variety by and large failed to moderate their views on Kufra and Religious conversions and their subsequent responses to men of other faiths and their cultural and civilisational motifs.

In his doctoral thesis, 'Sufism in Kashmir, Dr. Qayoom Rafiqi candidly observes that the sufis in general were politics oriented and avidly keen to find a niche in the courts of Sultans and nobles and enjoy positions of power and panoply. In sharp contrast to them the Kashmiri rishis permeated with the spirit of hermitages (ashrams) were quietists, pacifists and even in spiritual quest and detested politics as an activity repugnant to a love affair with God.

An officer for JK Cements

Sir,

J&K Cements Limited, a prestigious Public Sector Undertaking uptil now has become an abode for the retiring Chief Engineers, who from time to time have been deputed to this company almost at the fag end of their retirement. With the result, they are unable to deliver the goods. Till the time they get acquainted with the working of the company, they attain the age of superannuation. As a result, the company remains bereft of their valuable contribution towards the development and welfare.

Therefore, in the fitness of the things, it becomes incumbent upon the Government of the day especially the chairman of J&K Cements Ltd. viz. Dr. Mustafa Kamal, Minister for Industries and Commerce to search and elevate any suitable officer amongst the existing top management of the company, who really is well versed with the day to day working of the company, to man this prestigious undertaking, so that it retains its glory and remains the jewel in the crown amongst the state public sector undertakings.

Brick-kiln owners fleece public

Sir,

I want to draw the attention of the authorities to unfair trade practice, open loot and black-marketing indulged in by the brickkiln owners. For the last few days, I have been visiting various brick kilns with a relative of mine for the construction of his house. Before Diwali they used to tell that they were not to sell bricks of fresh stocks until they finish the old one. This stock consisted of bricks of first and 2nd class piled together. Previously they were selling bricks @ Rs. 1470/- thousand or Rs. 5100/- truck load of 3000 inclusive carriage. Persently they are demanding Rs. 1600 -1700/- thousand at the Kiln itself & Rs. 5800 for 3000 bricks. There is no grading, baked & semi-baked bricks and being sold at the same rate, whereas the first and 2nd class bricks should be stocked separately as they have different rates.

Without any Govt. order a hike of Rs. 400-700 truck load has been done. It is learnt that sometimes back the authorities had seized the records of some bricks kilns but the matter was hushed up for the reasons best known to the authorities.

An artificial scarcity is being created. The owners are not loading the kilns this season as they want to get rid of old Stocks and effect a price hike which they have very cleverly done in connivance with the concerned authorities. It seems that the union of brick kiln owners is more powerful then the Govt. or the Govt. is also with their union, will any one from the Govt. from chief Minister, concerned Minister, Chief Secretary, concerned Commissioner/Secretary, Divisional Commissioner to D.C. look into the matter and save the public from the clutches of these greedy brick kiln owners who are fleecing the public in broad day light.

I also appeal to the genuine consumer organisation to come to the rescue of harassed public and take up the matter with the Govt. and get a clarification issued as to what actually is the Govt. approved rate of Ist and 2nd class bricks and also persuade the authorities to take action against those who violate law and indulge in black market & loot.
