ICC promises to ‘look into’ BCCI’s demand

NEW DELHI, Nov 21: The International Cricket Council (ICC) today took the position that it could do "very little" about the Indian cricket board’s demand for sacking the ICC match referee Mike Denness, but promised to "look at it".

Malcolm speed, ICC chief executive, told Star News in Mumbai, "we will wait till we get to London and see what the ICC’s position is".

He went on to add, "there is very little we can do. But we will look very hard at the requests from the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India)."

Speed’s comments were the first reaction from the game’s governing body to the demand made by the cricket board chief Jagmohan Dalmiya yesterday that Denness, who has imposed harsh penalties on six Indian players, currently playing in South Africa, be replaced for the third and final India-South Africa test later this week. Alternatively the Indian board wants his decision to be put on hold.

Indicating that the ICC would find it difficult to accept the Indian board’s demands, Speed said, "there are rules, there are regulations. They are very clearly set out. If we make exceptions in every case there is no point in having rules".

At the same time he left open the possibility of finding a way out by stating, "we will look at it (BCCI request) and will do what we can."

Defending Denness against criticism for not answering any questions on his action, Speed said, "he is not to comment on matters in the course of the match. So do not be too critical of him for that. He is not permitted to make comment." (PTI)

UCBSA supports Indian stance against Denness

JOHANNESBURG, Nov 21: India’s stand to seek the removal of match referee Mike Denness for the third and final cricket test against South Africa received a huge boost today with the United Cricket Board of South Africa (UCBSA) announcing its support to the Indian stance.

Stressing it was absolutely vital that the Centurion Park test, beginning on November 23 is not disrupted Bronwyn Wilkinson, the media manager of the UCBSA said it would support virtually any action by India.

He said the UCBSA would not mind supporting the appeal to have match referee Mike Denness removed if that was the only option left to persuade the Indian team to stay back and complete the long tour.

The UCBSA position follows a day of top-level discussions after Denness’ decision to take disciplinary action against six Indian players, including a one-test ban that would prevent Virender Sehwag taking part in the third test. (PTI)

Waugh admonishes Tendulkar over ball-tampering

HOBART, Nov 21: No player was above the laws of cricket and Indian superstar Sachin Tendulkar had to pay the penalty for ball-tampering ("if he has picked the seam"), Australian captain Steve Waugh said today.

"If he’s picked the seam (of the ball) then he has got to pay the penalty like everyone else," Waugh said on the eve of Australia’s second test against New Zealand here.

"There shouldn’t be any favours because of your reputation or the way you play the game.

"If you do something wrong then you have to get pulled up for it", Waugh said.

Waugh, a staunch cricket traditionalist, applauded the decision to punish Tendulkar for ball-tampering, saying it showed the International Cricket Council (ICC) was no longer prepared to tolerate on-field misbehaviour.

He said in the past ICC match referees had been too lenient in handling similar issues.

"I think it’s been going on too long, the ball-tampering, affecting the state of the ball," he said.

"It’s about time people starting paying the penalty. If someone does something wrong they have to be penalised and in the past I think a lot of the players were let off, it wasn’t consistent’’.

"As long as they are consistent, that’s fine by the players."

While the on-field behaviour of his own side has often been questioned, Waugh said he had made his players aware he would not tolerate ball-tampering.

"If they are caught picking the ball they are on their own," he said of his team-mates.

"Everyone knows how you’re supposed to play, you’re not supposed to tamper with the ball and if they do that, they will face the consequences. You play tough but fair", he said.

Tendulkar was fined 75 per cent of his match fee and given a suspended one-match ban by english match referee Mike Denness after being accused of interfering with the ball in the drawn second test against South Africa in Port Elizabeth yesterday.

Sanctions were also taken against five other Indian players for irregularities during the match, including skipper Saurav Ganguly.

Furious Indian officials have demanded that Denness be replaced as referee for the final test which starts in Johannesburg on Saturday, a call supported by the South African authorities. (AFP)

Zimbabwe clinch test series against Bangladesh

CHITTOGONG, Nov 19: Zimbabwe extended Bangladesh’s dismal run in test cricket today by posting an eight-wicket victory in the second and final test here.

Bangladesh were shot out for 301 in their second innings, losing their last six wickets for 74 runs, before lunch on the fifth and final day at the Aziz Stadium.

The tourists, needing 11 to win, lost opener Dion Ebrahim and skipper Stuart Carlisle off successive balls in seamer Mashrafe Bin Mortaza’s opening over, but the target was too small to deny them victory.

Bangladesh have lost six of their seven matches since gaining test status last year, salvaging the lone draw in the first test at Dhaka last week when rain washed out play on the last two days.

Zimbabwe, denied a victory at Dhaka, clinched the two-test series for their third win in four matches against the cricketing minnows.

Bangladesh, made to follow-on 291 runs behind, suffered a blow when opener Javed Omar (80) was trapped leg-before by seamer Travis Friend off the day’s first ball.

The remaining Bangladeshi batsmen failed to put up any resistance as the lower order tumbled after the hosts had begun the final day on a promising 227-4.

Off-spinner Douglas Marillier did most of the damage, bagging four of the six wickets to fall on the final day to finish with a career-best 4-57.

The 23-year-old spinner, with just one wicket in his previous two tests, began by removing Mohammad Ashraful for 10.

Ashraful was involved in a 37-run stand for the sixth wicket with skipper Naimur Rahman.

The Bangladesh captain contributed a defiant 28 before being trapped leg-before by Marillier, who was well supported by part-time left-arm spinner Grant Flower.

Flower kept the pressure from the other end and finished the innings with his fourth wicket when he had wicket-keeper Khaled Mashud caught by Ebrahim for 12.

The rival teams now begin a three-match one-day series with the first international here on Friday. (AFP)

Kanvaljeet helps J&K draw against Punjab
*J&K opens account getting five points for historical first
innings lead over Punjab

Excelsior Sports Correspondent

JAMMU, Nov 21: After contributing valuable 62 runs in the first innings, senior cricketer and all-rounder Kanvaljeet Singh today helped Jammu and Kashmir in leveling draw against Punjab in the North-Zone Ranji Trophy league tie which played at M A Stadium, here today.

Before he lost the wicket at 89, Kanvaljeet had two crucial partnerships with Dhruv Mahajan and later with Ashwani Gupta which not only saved the hosts from a defeat, but helped leveling draw against star-studded side of Punjab.

At the end of the day, Jammu and Kashmir were at 211 for six with skipper Vijay Sharma (8) and Arshad Bhat (8) at the crease.

Although, J&K lost their first two wickets at a score of just 37 runs, the timely patient innings played by Kanvaljeet Singh and Dhruv Mahajan added 82 runs for the fourth wicket partnership. However, Dhruv Mahajan, who was playing comparatively fast innings, went to the pavilion just before lunch adding 46 runs to the total facing 107 balls hitting six fours.

Thereafter, another experienced batsman Ashwani Gupta, who hit the only century of the match, joined Kanvaljeet Singh and pushed the innings steadily. Ashwani too lost his wicket when he was caught behind by Ankur Sondhi off Ankur Kakkar at 18. He faced 63 deliveries and made two hits to the fence contributing 54 runs for the fifth wicket partnership.

For some moments things were seen taking the side of Punjab after the dismissal of another recognised batsman, Guru Partap Singh, who followed Ashwani, adding just five wickets to the total.

Kanvaljeet, who played throughout the day for the team thinking little of his personal score, tried a big shot, lacking proper timing, straight in the hands of Reetender Singh Sodhi. Kanvaljeet scored 89 runs off 263 deliveries with the help of six boundaries.

A big crowd witnessed the climax of Punjab’s bowlers struggle for the early dismissal of J&K innings, which they could not do and came empty handed after umpires called-off the day’s play of 94 overs.

However, the depressed young side of Punjab was greeted by a big crowd of Jammu fans, who had filled the complete pavilion, besides lining over the fence waiting for a glimpse of stars, Yuvraj Singh, Reetender Singh Sodhi. The crowd was so big that the police personnel deputed for the security of the players, had to escort the Punjab stars to the dressing room.

With today’s draw, J&K has got five points by vertue of their seven runs first innings lead, while guests Punjab added to their tally three more points. It was J&K’s third match and the earlier two were lost to Himachal and Haryana.

Now, J&K will meet Delhi in Delhi on November 24, followed by their last league tie against Services on November 30 to December 3 again at Delhi.
