Dalit conversions

Sir,

This is in reference to conversion of Hindu Dalits to Buddhism on 4th instant at Ambedkar Bhawan, New Delhi. This was an attempt of conversion similar to that of Dr. Ambedkar's exercise on October, 14, 1956 when half a million Dalits embraced Buddhism in Nagpur. Similar incidents of conversions had taken place number of times during recent past. Even during last year (December, 2000) about 400 Dalit families threatened mass conversion to Christianity at Pharal (Kaithal) in Haryana due to harassment at the hands of high caste people. There was lot of hue and cry over this issue of conversion by various Hindu organisations. Ultimately after great persuasion and assurances the conversions could be stopped. I personally feel that instead of making hue and cry by such organisations they should ensure social justice security and honour of the Hindu Dalits. After all how long the harassment and high handedness at the hands of high caste people will continue? The laws pertaining to social justice to Dalits should be earnestly and strictly implemented to minimise such conversions in the future.

Meditation for peace

Sir,

I want to congratulate Prof. K L Bhalla for his article 'Meditation for Peace' published in Daily Excelsior dated 21st October 2001. He has brought out very rightly, the real need of meditation specially under the present crises in the minds of the common masses, which are disturbing their peace of mind and very badly effecting their physical health. I am quite sure, meditation can cure many physical and mental ailments. From the ancient times to the present age people have been meditating in one shape or the other. Swami Yoga Nanda and others masters popularised this technique in Western countries. Today many Gurus like Maha Rishi, Mahesh Yogi and Shri Ravi Shankar are guiding the devotees for their spiritual upliftment. I personally feel, for meditation we can definitely spare a few moments every day and 'still' our minds. By the grace of our God and with faith in the efficacy of meditation, our life style will change. The only condition is a regular practice.

Let peace prevail

Sir,

I have been reading the various statements of APHC on the issue of accession of J&K to India in 1947.

I want to ask the APHC leaders that why most of them fought and won elections under Indian constitution, swore allegiance to the Indian constitution, became MLAs and Ministers, reaped the benefits and are still taking pension for being the MLAs when they did not believe that the accession was valid and elections held were fair. Why at the fag end of their life is this sudden awakening? Why for 40 years there was no militancy or insurgency or proxy war in J&K. Why the situation started in 1988 and not prior to this? Is it because that these leaders in the prime of their youth had no courage, physical or moral? Is it because that they wanted to reap the benefits till the going was good? Is it because there was no money flowing from Pakistan earlier? Lastly, why have these leaders’ children not joined the militancy even after their awakening. As everyone knows there children are still swearing allegiance to the Indian Constitution, getting, paid by the Government and cheek of all being, that they are being promoted in the hierarchy.

Coming to the accession of J&K firstly there was no such thing as provisional accession in the Instrument of Accession agreed to by Jinnah, Nehru and the Chambers of the Princely States including J&K. So once the King of the Princely State signed the accession (under whatever State) it was taken as legal and binding. Jinnah manipulated and got NWFP accession despite it being ruled by the Congress Government and wanting to accede to India (Read Mountbatten’s Memoirs). So why misrepresent the issue and instigate the people except for self gains which these people want to achieve. As per Mountbatten, the whole J&K problem started when Maharaja Hari Singh refused Jinnah to spend his holidays in Srinagar in September 1947, which annoyed him and the cycle of accession and war started, The accession of J&K was accepted by Indian Government on Sheikh Abdullah’s (leader of the masses of J&K) insistence. Regarding Pakistan raising the issue, it is very well known that Nehru went to UN to secure the balance of J&K (POK and Northern Areas) as per the legal aspects of Instrument of Accession. For first five years after the 1947-48 conflict, Pakistan avoided plebiscite as it felt it will lose due to the brutal and ruthless means it had used to secure J&K.

Today the situation in J&K created by Pakistan Army and ISI is not because of any love for Kashmiris but in words of Javed Nasir, former ISI Chief, "It offers Pakistan Army the opportunity of the century to redeem its honour and take revenge of Dhaka. Kargil , Kashmir, Punjab are all about paying India back for Pakistan’s 1971 defeat". See Kashmir is a battleground for Pakistan Army and ISI with Indian Army, hence the aspect of all is fair in love and war".

Now it is for the Kashmiris to understand the nefarious designs of Pakistan and one hopes its leaders instead of instigating people on superfluous aspects as accession, work for upliftment of the poor and improving the conditions of the people of J&K. Time is running out, if J&K does not get industry or foreign investment now it will be too late and too little thereafter. For this immediate requirement is for the people to fight and send these Pakistanis and Afghans back from where they came from as they have no place in Kashmir and let peace and prosperity prevail.
