Arrangements for Diwali reviewed by Fire Services Excelsior Correspondent JAMMU, Nov 13: Elaborate arrangements have been made by the J&K Fire Services department for people to celebrate Diwali safely in Jammu and other major towns of the region. According to a release, a meeting in this connection was held here today in the office chamber of Joint Director Fire Services at Trikuta Nagar in which several senior officers participated. Fire Services claimed to have launched awareness campaign on the eve of Diwali in which people were demonstrated how to celebrate the festival of crackers and were asked to adopt the fire precautions strictly. It may be recalled that as per the Supreme Court order dated Sept 27, 2001, the crackers will be exploded between 6 pm and 10 pm on Diwali day the police authorities have been directed to set up control rooms in various localities to check the nuisance/ or violation on the day. As per Fire Service directions, the people should not wear Terricot, synthetic and nylon clothes, burn crackers in the open places and keep a bucket of water and sand nearby while bursting crackers. The children should not be left alone to burst crackers. In case of any fire incident, people should dial Gandhinagar Fire Station at Ph 101, Fire Station City544263/ Gangyal480026, Katra 32451 and Udhampur 70897. At Fire markets, all the necessary precautions have been taken and fire tenders are installed there for emergency purpose. |
JK Paryavaran Sanstha for water conservation Excelsior Correspondent JAMMU, Nov 13: President J&K Paryavaran ( Environment) Sanstha Maj Gen Goverdhan Singh Jamwal ( retd) has urged upon the state government to approach Central Government and the World Bank to sanction projects to harness the tributaries of river Chenab as provided in the Indus Water Treaty to deal with the water famine in the region. Addressing general body meeting of the of the Sanstha at Badhori , 20 kms from here on Monday said that Indus Water Treaty provided additional irrigation of 1.75 lakh acres of land in Jammu province in the Chenab basin. He said with the water impounded in Neru Nullah in Bhaderwah, and other tributaries like Tawi, Jhajjar, Dudar etc. hundreds of water reservoirs can be created which will give water for agriculture, horticulture, irrigation and even for mini-hydel projects. He said out state is the only state where we have environment committee in both the Houses. The matter has also been taken up in the House, he maintained. He pointed out that Ladakh is also facing similar problem due to receding glaciers and climatic changes due to global warming. The General also suggested to harvest snow through watershed projects. Maj Govind Singh welcomed the members and gave background of the project Bari Badhori Watershed. Mr Ravi Singh Jamwal presented the annual general report and other activities of the Sanstha. he also referred to the visit of Magsaysay Award winner Anna Hazare to the project and informed that he gave his valuable suggestions during his visit to the project site. The general secretary gave details of the physical targets achieved and financial aspects of three projects being executed by the Sanstha which included Bari-Badhori Watershed project, Model Village project Suchani funded by Department of Science and Technology and Lime Orchard project based on drip irrigation funded by FAO of the United Nations. |

Havaldar commits suicide Excelsior Correspondent JAMMU, Nov 13: Three persons were killed and two others sustained grievous injuries while as an Army Havaldar committed suicide by shooing himself. According to police, one person was killed and two others sustained critical injuries in collision between two trucks at Koota Morh in Hiranagar tehsil. In the head-on-collision, driver of the one truck bearing registration number 1019-PB10AD died on-spot while two passengers of another truck number 3671-DL1GA sustained critical injuries. Getting the report of accident, a police party rushed to the spot and shifted the injured identified as Geeta Devi, wife of Baldev Raj and Kamala, daughter of Ram Dass of Dumal to hospital and their condition was serious when reports last came in. The deceased has been identified as Baldev Ram, son of Gyan Chand of Mangloor, Hiranagar. Police has registered a case in this connection for further investigation. Meanwhile, one Sant Ram, son of Radha Ram of village Finder in R S Pura tehsil, who was admitted in Government Medical College Hospital Jammu with critical injuries, today succumbed to his injuries. He reportedly fell from moving Sialdeh Express yesterday. Body of a woman was recovered from Billal Nullah under mysterious circumstances today. Some villagers spotted the body and informed the police which rushed to the spot and took the body into custody. The body which has been identified as that of Geeta Devi, wife of Ramesh of village Dharap was shifted to hospital. A case has been registered at Gangyal Police Station in this regard and further investigations were on. An Army Havaldar identified as Prabhu Rai of Madhya Pradesh today committed suicide by shooting himself at Miran Sahib Ordinance Depot. Belonging to 17 Raj Rifles, he came back from home few days back and was pleading for pre-mature retirement keeping in view his domestic problem. A case has been registered in this connection at Miran Sahib Police Station. |

Excelsior Correspondent Katra, Nov 13: The 12-day Capsule course in rescue training organised by Nawahar Institute of Mountaineering Batore concluded here today. During the course, 20 employees of the Shrine Board were imparted training in various aspects of rocks craft, river crossing besides first aid, causality carrying, weather forecasting and study of flora and fauna of Trikuta hills. The valedictory function was presided over by the Chief Executive Officer, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board, Mr. S.S.Blowria who also awarded certificates of merit to Mr. P.Singh, Mr. V.K.Dubey and Mr. Charan Singh while Mr. Sham Singh and Mr. Sudesh were given consolation prizes. Earlier, briefing on the valedictory function the Principal of the Jawhar Institute of Mountaineering, Group Commander, Mr. S.S. Puri brought out the objective of the short training course. He said that the course envisaged imparting the training to the employees regarding rescue of yatries in case of any eventuality and mishap like land slides, heavy snow fall, accidental falls and even attempt to suicide. He informed that trainees also under took high altitude track in an around Katra. |
Militants maligning holy concept of Islam: Suhrawardy Excelsior Correspondent DODA, Nov 13: The Minister of State for Home, Mr. Khalid Najeeb Sohrawardy has said that Islam preaches compassion, religious tolerance, love for humanity and peaceful co-existence and those spilling blood of innocents on its name are doing no good service to this great religion. Mr. Sohrawardy, who was on one-day tour of Kishtwar, Gandoh and other parts of the district was speaking at a public meeting at Bhadarwah yesterday. He said that Jehad in Islam has its own broad termed significance but its wrong interpretation by some vested interests has maligned the concept of Islam. The Minister said that lofty slogans have bore no fruits despite lapse of over 12 years and added that futility of such slogans needs to be admitted in the fast changing global scenario. He said that people irrespective of caste and creed need to come forward in further strengthening the bonds of communal harmony and mutual brotherhood for paving the way for ameliorating the socio-economic lot of the people, especially poor and the needy. The Minister cautioned the people to be vigilant against vested interests who are exploiting religious and regional sentiments of the people for their selfish ends. Earlier, while addressing a public meeting at Gandoh (Bhalesa), the Minister said that militants were afflicting miseries on innocents which was contrary to the tenets of Islam and Jehad. He assured that strict instructions stand already passed on the security forces for protection of human rights and to ensure that no innocent was harmed while their battle against militancy. He said that any one found guilty shall be dealt under law. |

also Excelsior Correspondent Jammu, Nov 13: Nearly 60,000 people took the first step towards freedom from Hepatitis-B in the Ist phase of the Hepatitis-B vaccination programme organised by the Department of Health Services. People from all walks of life, irrespective of economic status, age or sex flocked to the 200 health institutions specially marked as vaccination booths. Not only larger hospitals, but even some sub-centres in the peripheries witnessed a rush of people. In fact, the programme, which was scheduled for 2 days, got extended because of the huge response. Dr. Jasbir Singh, Director Health Services, Jammu has announced that at the next round on 08-09 December 2001, when people will take the second dose, others who missed out on the opportunity this time will be able to access the Ist dose. The entire health services machinery is charged and preparations are already on to make the next phase a larger success. A concerted public awareness campaign will be launched using a mix of print and electronic media to reach out to as many people as possible. The organisers have appealed to various NGOs to provide assistance in reaching out to the people who need it the most. The vaccine is being provided at Rs. 100 per Adult dose and Rs. 50 per dose for those below 10 years of age. The program will be extended to other districts in a phased manner, with the Ist dose in Rajouri and Poonch scheduled on 02-03-Feb 2002 and that of Udhampur & Doda on 16-17 Feb 2002. After the success of the pilot, the expectations and atmosphere are quite upbeat. The incurable killer infection Hepatitis_B said to be over 100 times more infections than AIDS, and is growing at an alarming proportions amongst the Indian population. With 4.7% of the population affected by Hepatitis-B, and over 78.5 crore Indians ar risk, India has the second largest pool of Hepatitis-B carriers in the world. In view of this, it becomes all the more imperative that public awareness and opinion is built up in this regard. |
Govt for measures to develop ISM: Sadhotra Excelsior Correspondent JAMMU, Nov 13: The Minister Incharge Rural Development, Mr. Ajay Sadhotra today said that Government has taken various measures to develop the Indian System of Medicine (ISM) in the State. The Minister was speaking at Dhanwantri Jayanti Samarooh organised by All Jammu and Kashmir Ayurvedic Congress. Paying tributes to the founder of the Ayurveda, the Minister said that the nature has bestowed our State with rich flora and fauna including medicinal herbs used in the Ayurvedic System of Medicine. He said there is a need of initiating research in this field to bring it at par with the allopathic system of medicines. He said both Central and State Governments have taken several measures to develop and revive this legacy that we have inherited from our ancestors. The Minister however, regretted that the people associated with this system of medicine in our State do not take much interest in research field. He said in view of growing popularity of this system of medicines among the people, the Chief Minister, Dr. Farooq Abdullah has decided to appoint the ISM doctors even in allopathic dispensaries. He said Ayurvedic Dispensaries have proved a great success particularly in rural areas as the people there are traditionally accustomed to this system. Among others, who addressed the Samoorah included Principal Secretary, Health and Medical Education, Mr. H.L.Kadalbaju, retired Principal Ayurvedic College, Mr. Uday Sharma and various doctors associated with ISM. |
Beg demands free ration for farmers Excelsior Correspondent JAMMU, Nov 13: Senior National Conference (NC) leader and former Minister, Dr Mehboob Beg has demanded free ration for the farmers of Kandi belt of Anantnag district whose crops have been hit by drought and "blast" disease. Talking to a delegation of farmers from the district who called on him here today, the NC leader assured them that he will take up the matter with the concerned Ministry. He however, cautioned them against the nefarious designs of vested elements who are bent upon destroying the state and shatter the dreams of "Naya Kashmir". The NC leader while making a dig at the separatist forces said they are responsible for the present misiries of the people of the state. These are the people who caused lot of destruction and devastation by joining hands with the foreign elements. They have never been sympathizers of Kashmiris but always exploited the innocent people for their vested interests. He said the National Conference is the history and Party has not only given the lot of sacrifice in emancipation of masses from Monarch rule through its decades long movement but its cadres also faced bullets in keeping enemies at bay during 12 year long turmoil. He asked the misguided youth to shun the path of violence, join the national mainstream and help in restoration of peace and normalcy. |
Bhalla inaugurates two lanes in Karan Bagh area Excelsior Correspondent JAMMU, Nov 13: As part of mass contact programme, senior Congress leader and member PCC Mr Raman Bhalla conducted an extensive tour of Karan Bagh area of Gandhi Nagar Assembly segment. During his tour, Mr Bhalla interacted with different section of the people and inquired about the problems being faced by inhabitants of area being neglected by the authorities. The residents informed the Congress leader that there was neither any drainage nor any sewerage system. The senior Congress leader also inaugurated two lanes namely Gurudwara Lane and St Peter School Lane. Construction of these lanes was a long pending demand of the residents as devotees to Gurudwara Sahib and school going children were facing hardships due to non-availability of roads. Residents expressed their gratitude towards Mr Bhalla for taking sincere efforts to get the lanes constructed by getting funds from Mirza Abdul Rashid, MP. The people also accorded rousing and warm reception to Mr Bhalla and assured their full support. Kissan Union threatens to hold hunger strikes Excelsior Correspondent JAMMU, Nov 13: All Jammu and Kashmir Kissan Union in a meeting under the chairmanship of Mr Ashok Sharma, MLA, expressed serious concern on the plight and hardships being faced by farming community due anti-farmers policy of the State and Central Governments. As per a release Mr Sharma said Kissan being the back bone of nation and country was hard-hit both economically and socially. He is the victim of anti-farmer policies of Central and State Governments for non-release of drought relief package, non-availability of seed and fertilizer, non-exemption of agricultural loans upto Rs 50,000, no facility of crop and cattle insurance, lack of crop procurement policy, no relaxation in power tariff etc. The Union decided to hold dharnas and hunger strikes throughout the State on the day of sacrifice of Bawa Jitto viz November 30. Prominent among those present in the meeting included Messrs Moti Lal Koul, Ch Garu Ram, Kuldeep Sharma, S Rajinder Singh and R C Raju. |

Tiny Tots School students celebrate Diwali festival Excelsior Correspondent JAMMU, Nov 13: The students of Tiny Tots Higher Secondary School, Roop Nagar Jammu, celebrated Diwali today in the premises of the institution. As per a release the students from all the classes participated in the function. The newly constructed building was decorated with flowers, balloons and buntings by the staff and the students. The students were well dressed in different styles and types of clothes and the presentation of the programme well organised. The students of lower wings danced and threw flower petals on the stage. The students of middle wing presented a dance show with the help of teachers. The students of higher wing displayed various items in an impressive manner, the main attraction being the fancy dress show in which students acted so professionally as if it were a TV show. The students of higher wing later displayed the earthen lamps which were made by the students of all the sections of the school. The lamps were made and beautifully decorated by the students, who also shared Diwali Greeting Cards with their friends and teachers. Mrs Veena Handa, Principal gave away certificates to the meritorious students and while addressing told the students about importance of Diwali and exhorted the students to greet their friends, relatives and that they should also take blessings from elders and teachers and remain specially careful while cracking the crackers. |
JK Bank organises "loan mela at Udhampur Excelsior Correspondent UDHAMPUR, Nov 13: A "loan mela" was organised by Jammu and Kashmir Bank Ltd here today which was inaugurated by Mr S A Khan, Deputy General Manager (T). In his welcome address, Mr M L Sharma, Assistant General Manger, Udhampur apprised the gathering about various lending schemes of the Bank. As per a release, Dr A A Altaf was elected the president of the new body while Dr Tanvir Ahmed and Dr Mushtaq will be its vice president and general secretary respectively.
