Past recalled
Sir,
Recently, the US
has said that military operation in Afghanistan
may be completed just before the advent of
winter. Clearly, a sense of Urgency is in their
mind and it is quite justified by the fact that
general winter in Afghanistan is approaching when
the terrain will become extremely difficult for
American forces to handle and there is every
possibility that Taliban may use "Fabian
Tactics" during this time which will prolong
this war considerably, adding to the American
woes.
Quite naturally,
the natives will be better acclimatized to the
harsh winter as compared to the American forces,
So the U.S will try its level best to finish off
this war before the advent of general winter.
It may seem
surprising but winter has proved to be the
turning point of many a great battle. Two best
examples can be cited: one that of Nepoleon and
another that of Hitler.
In 1812, Nepoleon
invaded Russia without facing any serious
opposition, he reached Mascow, but found it
abandoned in flames and there was no sign of
Russian surrender. Finally he decided to retreat
towards the France but the bitter Winter took the
heavy toll of his war weary troops and almost
whole of his "Grand Army" Perished in
the cold. It was his most terrible and costly
defeat which Ultimately led to his downfall.
Similar to the
Nepoleon General, winter proved to be Hitler's
worst enemy. On June 1941 Hitler invaded Russia
but much to this dismay, despite pumping all of
his resources and men, war exended to three
Russian winter. During these winters his supplies
felt short and were exhausted. Unable to bear the
brunt of terrible cold and Russian onslaught
German army got Vanquished and ultimately got
ruined.
In the end,
Russian Winter played a decisive role in Hitler's
decisive loss to Russia.
In todays context,
it seems that the US is not going to repeat the
history fortunately which was repeated by the
Hitler.
Yours etc...
