Saeed Anwar has no plans to quit cricket ISLAMABAD, Nov 8: Former Pakistan skipper Saeed Anwar has said he had no plans to quit cricket as it was his "livelihood and profession" and would pursue it till the 2003 World Cup. Anwar dismissed rumours that Pakistan cricket would lose him after his growing attachment and commitment to religion. "I have no plans to quit, at least not at this stage because cricket is my livelihood and profession. I will devote all my time to preaching islam by joining the Tableeghi Jamaat," The News, quoting the 33-year-old batsman, said today. "If I have no fitness problems I will keep playing till the 2003 World Cup. I had a severe knee problem but that has healed completely. I injured my wrist in Sharjah, but it is not that serious and will be all right by Ramzan and I will be available for the next series, " said Anwar. He remains Pakistans most successful opener with 4,052 runs in 52 tests with 11 centuries and 8,348 runs in one-dayers in 230 matches with 19 hundreds. The former captain said he found solace in religion after the death of his young daughter in September. "It was a heart-wrenching experience to lose someone so close to you. But I have taken it in my stride because being a Muslim I believe whatever happens to you, is written in your fate. But the death has made me a better person and muslim, and I am devoting a lot of time to working with the Jamaat these days," the bearded cricketer said. Anwar also said it was every Muslims duty to fulfil his religious duties, but at the same time one had to earn a livelihood as well. "Anyone who is saying i have lost interest in cricket or have no time for it, is wrong. I still have some cricketing ambitions and I will pursue them, he added." However, the left-hander said the death of his daughter had made him more sensitive and aware to the problems faced by the poor throughout the world. "Everyday on television I watch the poor Afghans, especially the children, on our border in Quetta and Peshawar struggling to get a decent meal or make a living. It saddens me a lot. That is why I have decided to do my bit as a practicing muslim and contribute towards the presidents Afghan relief fund," Anwar said. He said he had already collected Rs 1,00,000 each from some of his team-mates who had promised him further help. "Waqar Younis, Inzamam-ul-Haq, Moin Khan, Rashid Latif, Azhar Mahmood, and Shoaib Akhtar will work in their respective cities to collect money for the Afghan fund. Hopefully, we should be able to contribute a substantial amount." "I am participating in Jehad in my own way. My jehad at the moment is to raise money for the Afghan refugees. I will also be meeting and asking Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Tauqir Zia to help us in this regard," he added. (UNI) |
ICC appoints Holding as bowling advisor to Shoaib LONDON, Nov 8: The International Cricket Council has appointed former West Indies fast bowler Micael Holding as bowling advisor to Pakistan paceman Shoaib Akhtar who had been reported for a suspect action during the recently-concluded Khaleej Times Trophy Tournament in Sharjah. Holding, one of international crickets greatest fast bowlers who has played in 60 test matches and taken 249 wickets during eleven years, will work with Shoaib on problems with his action. "I am delighted that Michael (holding) has agreed to work with the ICC and Shoaib Akhtar in this important area," ICC chief executive officer Malcolm Speed said. "His outstanding record as a player and the excellent communications skills he brings to his work in the media make him perfectly suited to the role," he added. Shoaib was reported for suspect action by icc match officials during the Sharjah Tournament. The report was filed by match referee Denis Lindsay and umpires Rudi Koertzen and George Sharp. He is now in stage two of the icc process for dealing with bowlers with suspect actions. This will involve him working with an advisor over the next three months to analyse concerns raised and undergo any recommended remodelling of his action. A detailed assessment of Akhtars action, and any remedial work undertaken, will be submitted to the ICC and the Pakistan Cricket Board by February 7 next year. The content and conclusions of this report will be made public. During this period Shoaib can continue to play international cricket, the ICC said. "The three stage system introduced by the icc at the beginning of the year now gives all bowlers identified as having suspect actions, every opportunity to rectify problems and remain in the game while they are doing so," Speed said. This is Shoaibs second report inside the past 12 months, following an earlier incident during a one-day series in New Zealand in March, when he was reported by umpires Doug Cowie and Steve Dunne. The Cricket Council said a third report in 12 months would activate the ICC bowling review group. This would meet with the bowler and his representatives to discuss the previous two assessment reports, video footage and any further evidence supplied by the player or his board. If a majority of the group decide the bowler has a consistently illegal action, he would be banned from playing international cricket for 12 months from the date of the hearing. (UNI) |
Friend plots Bangladesh collapse DHAKA, Nov 8: Pace bowler Travis Friend bagged his maiden five-wicket haul as Zimbabwe routed Bangladesh for 107 on the opening day of the first test at the Bangabandhu Stadium here today. Zimbabwe, however, faltered in reply as they lost two wickets for 20 runs at the end of a rain-interrupted days play. Friend finished with 5-31, improving on his previous best of 3-87 against South Africa at Bulawayo this year. The fast bowler, who shared the new ball with former captain Heath Streak, maintained a lively pace throughout the innings, beginning his wicket-takingspree in the 12th over. The 20-year-old trapped Al Sahariar leg-before and then bowled Habibul Bashar off consecutive deliveries. He went on to remove Khaled Mahmood, Naimur Rahman and Khaled Masood. Friend was well supported by seamers Streak and Henry Olonga, who shared the other five wickets. First-change bowler Olonga took three wickets, including the prize scalps of Aminul Islam and Mohammad Ashraful. Bangladesh were 35 for six at one stage, but rearguard action by Naimur Rahman (13), Mushrafa Bin Mortaza (eight) and Enamul Haque (24 not out) helped the team cross the three-figure mark. Left-handed Haque hit four boundaries off 54 deliveries during his 110-minute innings to become his teams highest scorer. Haque shared a 23-run stand for the ninth wicket with Mortoza and a last-wicket partnership of 31 with Manjural Islam (9). Left-arm fast bowler Manjural then made his presence felt when the visitors began their reply, striking in his first two overs. The 22-year-old removed Trevor Gripper, caught by Javed Omar, and then trapped opener Dion Ebrahim leg-before to leave Zimbabwe struggling at 4-2. However, Stuart Carlisle and Grant Flower ensured there was no further setback. (AFP) |
11th State Billiards
and Snooker Excelsior Sports Correspondent JAMMU, Nov 8: Defending champion Kamal Rohmetra has retained the State Snooker title, winning the championship for the third time in a row. He defeated Vishal Abrol in the finals which was played at Billiards hall of the MA Stadium, here this afternoon. Although, Kamal made a confident start winning the first two frames with comfortable margin, yet he faced difficulties in the third and fourth frames. Vishal played quite a good game, but was not able to hold Kamal from retorting in the same tone. After going two frames down, Vishal fought back in the third when he made a break of 47 points to his total against just four points in Kamals account. However, Kamal with sheer patience and coolness fully concentrated on the table and started adding points one by one. At one stage there were 27 points left on the table and Kamal was in need of an equal number to catch Vishals score. Experienced Kamal sweeped the whole table potting black ball twice and snatched the third frame from Vishals hand making it a 67-60 win. In the fourth frame Vishal again troubled Kamal with little intention to win, but only to avoid the straight frames loss in the hands of Kamal. No doubt Kamal was leading 17-6, but Vishal took the ten points lead in the very next move adding 21 points in single attempt bringing the score on board to 17-27. However, Kamal replied in the same tone and made a handful of 36 points break to go create a wide uncoverable gap 53-28. Thereafter, Kamal continued adding comparatively good number of points in his tally to take away the frame 68-37 thereby wining the final for the third time in a row, in straight frames. The score: 98-23, 65-44, 67-60, 68-37. In this final Surjit Singh Baloria was marker, while Mushtaq Ahmed was chief referee. Prominent among those witnessed the final were K K Khosa, Patron of the Association, Ramesh Kour, chairman, sports committee of the Amar Singh Club and Varjinder Sharma, executive member of the Association. A large crowd witnessed the final match. Meanwhile, in the Billiards finals, Kamal will meet the same opponent, Vishal Abrol, to defend his title tomorrow at 4 pm. Ranji Trophy MANDI, Nov 8: Jammu and Kashmir saw the initiative slipping away from their hands as the hosts restricted them with mighty 41 run lead today at the end of the second day of the four day north Zone Ranji league match being played at Shaheed Havaldar Kishen Chand Stadium. In stark contrast to yesterdays play, when the hosts were bowled out for 145 runs and saw J and Ks upper hand, the tourists could not do much today and were all out for 187 runs in 82 overs. Resuming the overnight total of 21 for 1 the tourists lost their second wicket in the 23rd over with 43 runs on the board, Raju Sharma (28) with five boundaries played brilliantly before he was caught behind by Vishan Bhatia, Kanwaljeet (16) and Dhruv Mahajan (26) played few good knocks outside the fence before becoming victims of Shakti Singh and Nischal Gaur. Yesterdays hero Ashwani Gupta (23) became second victim of Vishal in the 56th over when the score was 125. Vikrant Taggar and Surinder Singh were the only players who crossed the 30 run mark. Vishal Bhatia hammered the J and K inning taking four wickets accompanied by Shakti Singh, who took 3 wickets to end the visitors ist inning. Nischal Gaur took two wickets. Himachal started their second innings with much confidence and were 73 for 2 in 23 overs. Nischil Gaur and Sandeep Sharma were sent to the pavilion by Jagtar Singh and Abdul Qayoom in 15th and 44th over. Rajeev Nayyar (17) and Sangram Singh (22) were on crease at the end of the second day play. Score board (brief): Himachal (ist innings) 145 J and K (ist innings) 187 Raju Sharma 28 Vikrant Taggar 31 Abdul Qayoom 32 Vishal Bhatia 55/4, Shakti Singh 71/3. Himachal Pradesh (2nd innings) 73/2. Yashpal helps Services to score 238 AMRITSAR: A strokeful century by upcoming bastman Yashpal helped lowly placed Services to a modest score of 238 for the loss of eight wickets at the end of the second days play in the North Zone Ranji Trophy league encounter against hosts and favourites Punjab here today. With Yashpal at the crease, the visitors seemed confidant of over-hauling the Punjab first innings score of 300. But luck seemed to favour the hosts as Yashpal after scoring 123 was hit on the elbow by a rising ball from medium pacer Vineet Sharma and he was forced to retire hurt and may not be able to resume his innings tomorrow. At the close of play today, J P Pandey (3) and Arun Sharma were at the crease. Services began their innings after the hosts last pair was dismissed without addition to their overnight score of 300. The Punjab bowlers immediately got to their task and at lunch services were reeling at 76 for four with Yashpal and Sarabjeet at the crease. Medium pacer Gangandeep scalped three victims and the fourth went to Reetinder Sodhi. For Punjab, Gangandeep took four wickets, while Bablu Kumar claimed two and one went to Sodhi. Delhi 288 for 7, squander early advantage NEW DELHI: Haryana spinners struck vital blows in the post-tea session to bring down Delhi from a commanding position and reduce them to 288 for seven in the first innings at the close of second days play in the North Zone Ranji Trophy tie here today. Replying to Haryanas 316 all out, Delhi failed to capitalise on the 121-run opening stand between Gautam Gambhir (91) and Akash Chopra (48) and from a dominant position of 166 for two collapsed to 260 for seven with Amit Mishra striking thrice and Gautam Vashisht twice. Just when the partnership was going strong, and the hosts firmly on course to a huge first innings score, Haryana got the breakthrough when Nitin Aggarwals direct throw broke the stumps at the non-strikers end while Chopra (48, 7x4) was attempting a cheeky single.
