CPI opposes foreign equity in print media

NEW DELHI, Nov 8: CPI today opposed foreign equity in print media as well as entry of foreign technical and medical journals into the country saying it would go against national interests.

Apprehending that the motive of the foreign investors may not just be making profit but to "influence political opinion", CPI national secretary D Raja said the press has certain national duties.

On the proposal to allow non-news technical and medical journals, he said "this is the beginning of FDI in print media."

Raja said even the BJP would have to think twice before allowing foreign equity in print media as press cannot be treated at par with the rest of the industry. Newspapers cannot be compared with other products."

Stating that FDI in print media would "kill" the small and medium newspapers, he said allowing it would lead to "highly centralised media monopolies" which would go against the interests of a pluralistic society, the multi-party system and a diverse country.

He said the entry of multinational companies would lead to questions who would set the agenda for the newspapers. The non-news section of the dailies would "influence the culture and values of our society", he added. (PTI)
