Awakening against bandhs

Sir,

Going by latest reports in the local dailies as well as in national papers with special Jammu and Kashmir coverage, it appears that a new awakening against observance of frequent bandhs is dawning on several organisations as well as general public who have started articulating their serious concern about the negative and adverse impact and repercussion of these bandhs on all and sundry including various aspects of our life. This is appreciable and a welcome sign.

The bandhs are generally observed on one pretext or the other including sometimes with the purpose of lodging a protest against the perceived wrong policies of the Government as well as to ventilated general public emotions against the atrocities perpetrated by the subversive elements etc. But it is a common experience that no fruitful results are achieved, instead the whole life/activities get paralysed owing to these bandhs, causing immense inconvenience to the general public simultaneously inflicting losses worth crores of rupees on our economy.

Besides, the needy requiring immediate medical assistance often fail to reach hospital well in time. The children cannot go to their schools thus suffer study losses. Offices wear thin attendance and normal working suffers a lot. Milkwallas and vegetable growers can not take their perishable products to market, many times resulting in distress sales. The commuters leaving for outstations having booked their seats in advance find difficulty in reaching bus stand and railway station. Tourists including majority of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi pilgrims face immense inconvenience during these bandhs. The worst sufferers are the daily wagers, rehriwallas and street vendors who are deprived of their earning in order to meet their survival.

There is definitely a need to look for alternative modes of expressing resentments which may include wearing black badges, organising peaceful rallies and forming human chains etc and these expressions should be so observed as not to paralysis the whole system. The ultimate purpose is to pass on the message to the concerned quarters and the above modes observed in a peaceful and democratic way will certainly achieve the desired purpose.

The new awareness will see its fruition only if this welcome nascent awakening also dawns on the organisations and the people sponsoring such bandhs sacrificing their inherent vested interests for the larger interests and convenience of the general public.

Meditation classes

Sir,

This is in reference to the article " Meditation for peace" by Prof K L Bhalla dated Oct. 21st 2001. Meditation is a must for every individual whatever his vocation is, "Know Thyself" is an age-old maxim, for self-knowledge one has to explore one's inner being. Human nature is complex and psychologists have advised seekers to try to know conscious, sub-conscious and un-conscious States of mind. By meditation one can delve into one's inner consciousness. A stage comes when the mind is purified and one can have a glimpse of one's divine self.

Life is becoming day by day full of noises, and tension. We can-not change totally our surroundings. But we can meditate and try to know what the ultimate goal is. It will be very useful if" Dhyana Yoga" classes are started in our institutions. This will improve students' power of concentration. Meditation helps us to restore natural rhythms of our mental, physical and emotional State.

Wipe out terrorism

Sir,

"The higher you rise, the harder you fall" is a quote which is not new to the mankind. The world knows about the rise and fall of Hitler; super-power character of Soviet Union cracking down as a house of cards; terrorism in Punjab and hegemony of America over rest of the world and fall of its World Trade Centre. Just around 5,000 American people have died and America has made a coalition of various countries to counter terrorism and attacked Afghanistan to kill Osama. Who created Osama and who nurtured his dreaded growth? Needless to say that it is America who gave birth and handed him over to Pakistan to keep the pot of militancy hot in Asia, otherwise who would have thought what America has produced in terms of its military equipment and weapons ?

The dubious role of Pakistan who claims to be the messiah of Muslims in India made a deal with America to save its dooming economy and sold out its air bases to destroy Afghanistan . What Pakistan is likely to get in a few days from now is assistance package worth billions of dollars from America ? Needless to say that this assistance is at the cost of Afghanis who are being killed everyday by the American bombing. It is these Afghanis who were waging war against India in Kashmir and Pakistan used to be their chief mentor. Pakistan, the world’s known harbourer and supporter of terrorism in India, might be able to recover in terms of its economy but the wounds and pain it has inflicted on the Afghanis, they may never forget.

Since mid eighties, India kept on informing the world about the growing menace of terrorism in Punjab and Kashmir which was being sponsored by Pakistan and no country including America did pay any heed to it. Punjab bled for nearly ten years, Kashmir is bleeding for the last fifteen years and America just conveys concern for the wounds being inflicted on our civilians and armed forces. If one has to go by the quote that the higher you rise, the harder you fall, it does not appear to be true in case of terrorism in Kashmir. It is on the rise and how to make this peak fall, is something which India must think about before it is too late. We must understand it, once for all, that America is a nation of (not double but) multiple standards and should not be relied upon especially when it has joined hands with Pakistan, completely ignoring Indian concerns, lifting sanctions against Pakistan and provided lucrative financial assistance package to it. It would be in the fitness of things if we, a country of over one billion people, start looking for solutions to our Problems with a pragmatic and integrated approach.

We must show to America and other nations that we have the will and determination to wipe out militancy from Kashmir and to achieve this India should not hesitate to attack terrorist camps in Pakistan. This appears to be the most plausible solution to make the terrorism in Kashmir fall harder since it has reached its peak now and it must have a downfall.
