BLOEMFONTEIN (South Africa), Nov 5: India were facing an uphill task in the first cricket test match after South Africa piled on a huge 563 runs in their first innings to take a commanding 184 run lead on the third day here today. By the end of stumps, India had wiped out 96 of those runs with Shiv Sunder Das making an attractive unbeaten 54 on his 24th birthday. The Indians however had lost the vital wicket of Rahul Dravid who once again failed to deliver as an opener. But the day belonged to the South Africans who, helped by a brilliant century from Lance Klusener, went on to post their highest total against India. Klusener, who was the innings top-scorer with 108 runs, and wicketkeeper batsman Mark Boucher frustrated the Indians for close to two hours in a 121-run partnership for the seventh wicket after after the visitors had made deep inroads into their batting order by taking three important wickets in the morning session. Two of those wickets came off successive deliveries from Javagal Srinath who completed his 200 wickets in test cricket on way to a five wicket haul. Leg-spinner Anil Kumble took three wickets while left-arm seamer Ashish Nehra scalped two as the Indians put up a much more disciplined bowling performance today. India started positively in their second innings with the first over fetching them 12 runs. The first ball from Shaun Pollock was run down to fine leg boundary by Dravid to take three runs. Das then struck two successive fours, the first going just over a jumping wicketkeeper while the second being an exquisite cover-drive. But the Indians could not sustain the momentum. Dravid, looking quite good and scoring fluently, was unable to last long and was caught at gully by Gary Kirsten in Pollocks fourth over. Dravid made just 11. New man V V S Laxman was tentative and survived some anxious moments against Pollock who tested him with a flurry of good-length deliveries outside the off-stump. Cramped for room, Laxman was unable to execute his trademark cuts and pulls and was clearly in trouble as some of the balls missed the edge of his bat by a whisker. Das, at the other end, played some beautiful cuts and drives, picking up four boundaries through the point and cover region. He chose Makahaya Ntini for special treatment hitting him for four fours, three of them in one over. Das was tested by two nasty bouncers in the 24th over by Mornantu Hayward but the diminutive opener from Orissa remained unperturbed and answered with an elegant on-drive that went crashing to the long-on ropes. That was his 11th four and brought up his half-century in style. Laxman too settled down to play some good shots but he was far from convincing in his unbeaten 25. Earlier, the Indians, who had picked up three wickets in the morning session to stage a fightback, were once again pushed on to the backfoot by a 121-run seventh wicket stand between Klusener and Boucher. The visitors had a good start to the day when they dried out the runs for overnight batsman Jacques Kallis and Boeta Dippenaar who came to play today after Neil McKenzie was out to the last ball yesterday. The first three overs did not produce any run and Dippenaar had to wait for 26 balls to open his account. The first runs of the day, a streaky shot through the slip fielders fetched three runs and brought up the half-century of Kallis who was on 49 yesterday. Kumble and Zaheer, who opened the bowling today, maintained an excellent line and length and cramped the batsmen for room. India took the new ball after the 95th over and Srinath and Nehra used it to good effect. In the 98th over, Nehra produced the breakthrough. The Delhi seamer, who was generating a good amount of swing, induced an outside edge off the bat of Kallis which flew to second slip where Laxman took a fine catch. Kallis made 68 with the help of ten boundaries and South Africa lost their fourth wicket at 359. Srinath then dismissed Dippenaar and Pollock off successive balls when South Africa were within two runs of the Indian total. BLOEMFONTEIN, South Africa, Nov 5: Javagal Srinath claimed his 200th test wicket as Indias bowlers fought back on the third day of the first test against South Africa today. Resuming on 327 for three in their first innings, South Africa had reached 419 for six wickets at lunch, a lead of 40 runs. Lance Klusener was 29 not out and wicketkeeper Mark Boucher undefeated on 19. Srinath, playing in his 54th test, struck with two wickets in two balls in his first spell with the second new ball. Boeta Dippenaar (20) was his 199th victim, clean bowled by a magnificent delivery which just straightened enough to beat the bat and remove his off stump. South African captain Shaun Pollock followed immediately, Srinath forcing the batsman on to the back foot with a sharp delivery which took the inside edge before looping off Pollocks thigh to Shiv Sunder Das at short leg. Srinath acknowledged the landmark with a wave to the Indian players balcony as he was congratulated by his team mates. The hat-trick delivery was comfortably dealt with by boucher, who drove a half volley into the covers. Jacques Kallis reached his 17th test half-century in the third over of the morning, chopping Zaheer Khan to third man for three. He had progressed to 68 when he edged Ashish Nehra to VVS Laxman at second slip. His innings lasted three and half hours during which he faced 138 balls and struck ten fours. Kallis also extended his world record for time between dismissals in tests to 1241 minutes - nearly 21 hours. The last time he was dismissed before Nehras strike was in the second innings of the fifth test against the West Indies in Jamaica in April this year. (REUTERS) |

Paes-Bhupathi
call for doubles championship PARIS, Nov 5: French Open champions Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi have called for the cancelled World Doubles Championship to be rescheduled for January in Bangalore. The event, which had been planned for November 7 to 11 in the Southern Indian city, was called off because of security concerns surrounding the current conflict in nearby Afghanistan. But the Indian duo insist that the event can be held quite safely at the same venue in the new year. "It really is a touchy subject right now," said Bhupathi. "When the United States was attacked in September, a lot of things were cancelled and everyone was freaking out. "But a lot of events have been reinstated. For example, the England cricket tour of India is still going ahead. "The organisers want the doubles championship to go ahead, the players certainly want it to take place. January 28 has been put forward as a possible date, but the ATP arent too keen. "But we are hopeful that something can be worked out," added Bhupathi after he and Paes had reached the final of the Paris Masters here yesterday where they were beaten 3-6 6-4 6-3 by Ellis Ferreira and Rick Leach. The year-end doubles finale was to be held at the Karnataka State Lawn Tennis Association Tennis Centre in Bangalore where huge crowds were expected to support Paes and Bhupathi who were runners-up last year. This year has been a successful comeback season for the pair, known as the Indian express, with titles won at the French Open and at the masters event in Cincinnati -performances that have seen the duo rise to number four in the world. When they beat the Czech pair of Petr Pala and Pavel Vizner 7-6 6-3 in the French Open final at Roland Garros in the summer, it marked an incredible turnaround in their fortunes and their relationship - they had a much publicised falling out in 2000 and decided to go their separate ways. "It was not that difficult getting back together again," said Bhupathi. "There was always that chemistry there. "We have had a good year, not a great year. This season was about getting back into the top rankings and, hopefully, we can shoot for the number one spot in 2002." If their past record is anything to go by, they will be a pair to be feared. However, their decision to rekindle their partnership seems to be paying off. (AFP) |
Ramandeep disapproves
frequent changes of IHF coaches By Sanjeev Sharma JAMMU, Oct 5: Former India captain and Asian gold medalist Ramandeep Singh has disapproved the India Hockey Federations (IHF) policy of frequent change in the coaches of the national team. Such frequent changes directly affect the performance and consistency of the players resulting into the teams poor show in the international competitions, Ramandeep said while talking to this correspondent. "No doubt we have a number of good coaches in India, yet the need of an hour that IHF should have faith on them. The frequent change in the coach effects the performance of the team", pointed out Ramandeep adding that a coach should stay their for some time. Ramandeep, who was captain of the Indian team , could not go through to the final due to sheer hard luck. That affected the career of this Punjab lad, who was immediately after the arrival of the team in India, dropped from the team. Unhappy over the decision of the higher-ups, polite Punjabi speaking Ramandeep says, "it was one of the reasons for my remaining away from the Indian team after the World Cup Hockey Championship in Sydney, while the main reason was my marriage which took place soon after the World Cup." However, with the World Cup title to juniors credit, Ramandeep feels that it will prove to be a confidence building measure for the senior team. "The presence of a number of these junior players already in the senior team will certainly improve the performance in the times to come", he said. However, he was of the opinion that luck matters more than hardwork. Justifying , Ramandeep said, "bad luck always haunts us. In the World Cup we were about to go through to the semi-finals, but lost in the way, whereas in the Junior World Cup, our boys had narrow escape in the initial stages, but they finished with the World Cup title". Commenting on the Supreme Court verdict that out of way promotions given to the officers be seized, Ramandeep said, "It will down the morale of the players, who have got the promotion after excelling at the international level. The verdict will directly affect the hockey vizards like Pragat Singh, Baljeet Singh Dhillon and my self", he commented. Ramandeep Singh presently in Punjab Police team which has entered the semifinal of the ongoing 50th All India Police Hockey Championship being played at Jammu. |
