Warne back in the picture for Australian captaincy

SYDNEY, Nov 4: The Australian Cricket Board (ACB) has told leg-spinner Shane Warne he is a potential candidate for Australian captain position after Steve Waugh retires, the Sunday Telegraph reported today.

It was thought that Warne’s chances of ever being captain were gone when he was stripped of the Australian vice-captaincy by the ACB last year.

"The Australian Cricket Board have told me the door is not closed, and that I am definitely in consideration," Warne said.

Warne was careful to emphasise he wasn’t campaigning for the position and that he only wanted what was best for the team.

"I’m not pushing for it. The thing with the captaincy is, it has got to be something that is good for the team at the time. You have to be the best man for the job," he said.

Warne’s controversial off-field antics involving phone conversations with an english nurse caused the ACB to sack him as vice-captain and give the job to Adam Gilchrist in August 2000.

Although Warne is yet to captain Australia at test level his record in one-day internationals speaks for itself.

Warne notched up a tally of 10 wins from 11 matches as captain during the 1998-99 season when England and Sri Lanka toured.

Wicket-keeper Adam Gilchrist and right-handed batsman Ricky Ponting are also being considered for the job when Steve Waugh, who is now 36 years old, finally retires. (REUTERS)

Akram to play till 2003 World Cup

SHARJAH, Nov 4: The senior-most player in the international cricket arena, Pakistan’s Wasim Akram, has said he aims to play until the 2003 World Cup and then settle down to help his country in whatever capacity the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) would want him to contribute.

He said the only thing that mattered to him was to see Pakistan win even if there were differences among his teammates, he told the ‘Gulf News’. "The only thing that matters is winning."

Regarding the new zip in his bowling, Akram said he had worked very hard playing cricket every day. "I have the backing of the board, the captain and the coach." he said his trainer, Junaid, has changed him in the last year and a half.

Commenting on the match-fixing controversy dogging him, Akram said, "it is following him but he does not follow it. In fact it motivated him to do well and to work hard."

"We have got used to these things like getting up in the morning and going to the courts," Akram said.

"Some people say that I am a RAW (Indian intelligence agency) agent. Some people say I am worth three billion rupees. Hopefully, after the inquiry things will settle down," he said.

Akram said he would fight those people in court who maligned him in Pakistan or England. "If there is no proof, such people should keep their mouths shut," he said.

He said Pakistan has a lot of talented players and PCB head lt. General Tauqir Zia is putting money in the right places like academies. "We have a young crop in Pakistan. We have 25 bowlers who have (trained in) pace from the academy and eventually the gap will be filled."

He said Mudassar Nazar right now is the best thing to happen to Pakistan cricket.

"You can see that the team spirit is back. He believes in hard work. It is a relaxed atmosphere now. The team wants to win. The coach is working towards a goal instead of thinking I have to drop this guy and that senior player. The team requires positive guys in charge like Mudassar," Akram said. (UNI)

Cyril Ekka’s golden goal helps CISF down CRPF in QFs

Excelsior Sports Correspondent

JAMMU, Nov 4: The rumour that Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) team was quite under pressure proved true when their arch rivals Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) beat them in a golden goal to join Punjab Police, Border Security Force (BSF) and Jammu and Kashmir Police in semi-finals of the 50th All India Police Hockey Championship being played at K K Hakhu Stadium here today.

It was the first up-set of the championship when last year’s runners-up CRPF was beaten by the fighting CISF in the most interesting quarter-final which was witnessed by a huge crowd this evening. It may be recalled that last year CRPF had sent packed the CISF team at the same stage. The celebrations at the CISF camp was the outcome of their satisfaction over treating CRPF in the same manner as they were treated last year.

Earlier, in the game time the match ended in a 1-1 draw paving the way for the extra time. However, in the extra time, the CISF men sounded the board for the golden goal in the very first move they initiated soon after the umpires blew the whistle.

CISF, who had a good control over the ball, were dangerous in their attacks and their every move were full of passion. They had taken the early lead in the 22nd minute when Cyril Ekka hit a penalty stroke right into the net. Afterwards, they remained in the CRPF goal area most of the time, but strong defence created by the CRPF troubled them inside the circle.

CISF’s mistake of missing a penalty stroke in the second half gave the opponents a chance to level the score in the 61st minute through Toper Kujur. In all, CISF got one penalty corner as compared to six in favour of CRPF. Blaise Monterio and GS Sanga were umpires in this match.

Now, CISF will meet Jammu and Kashmir Police in the first semi-final on November 6 at 3 pm, while Punjab Police will be playing against Border Security Force (BSF) at 39 am. Tomorrow, will be the rest day.

Talking to EXCELSIOR, CISF coach, Sukhbir Singh was the happy man after beating the CRPF in the quareter-finals. He said, " we took revenge of last year’s defeat after challenging them well in advance".

When asked about their strategy in the semi-finals against J&K Police, he said, "J&K Police is not an easy side, they have proved that in the previous matches, but we will doe out best to beat them and reach the final this time".

Sarandeep spins Delhi to an innings win against Services

NEW DELHI, Nov 4: Off spinner Sarandeep Singh ripped through the batting line up claiming six wickets as Delhi inflicted a humiliating an innings and 23 runs defeat on Services on the last day of their opening North Zone Ranji Trophy league match at Palam Ground here today.

Sarandeep, who has shifted from Punjab to Delhi, justified the faith of the selectors who included him in the side at the last minute by grabbing eight wickets for 145 runs (2/78, 6/67) in his debut match for the side.

Services batsmen, who gave a gritty display yesterday, virtually threw away their wickets and caved in withoit any fight.

Delhi had declared their first innings 467 for five and, services overnight 297 for nine, needed 21 more runs to avoid the follow on as the match resumed this morning but they were all out without adding a run to their score.

C D Thomson (overnight 42) came with Sudhakar Ghag to bat but services hopes of making Delhi bat again were dashed of the very first ball of the day when Rahul Sanghvi had C D Thomsan (overnight 42) caught by Mithun Minhas. Sanghvi finished the innings with a haul of five wickets off 37.1 overs in which he gave away 69 runs.

Forced to follow on, after conceding 170 runs first innings lead, services batting lineup, unlike in the first innings, collapsed like a house of cards and were bundled out for paltry 147 runs on an easy wicket.

Services thus opened their campaign on a disastrous note with an innings defeat.

It was only promising youngster Yashpal, who put up some resistance for services as he scored 83 runs (217 m,187 b,7x4). Coming at number 4 slot, Yashpal was the last batsman to get out. He added 20 runs for the l0th wicket with Arun Sharma who remained unbeaten without scoring a run.

Only two others, opener P M S Reddy and Sarabjit Singh crossed the double digit-both scored identical 13 runs- as remaining batsmen seemed in hurry to go back home.

Services were 68 for four at lunch but after that wickets fell in quick succession and when they were nine down for 127, tea was delayed for half an hour, but it did not last long as Bhandari clean bowled Yashpal in the 12th minute of the extended post lunch session.
