Trophy MUMBAI, Oct 31: A confident Karnataka take on Jammu and Kashmir on the opening day of the Santosh Trophy Football Tournament (Cluster-6) at the Cooperage here tomorrow. Karnataka coach A D Nagendran told PTI here today that his side was a mixture of youth and experience and was confident of doing well in the championship. "We have a well balanced side with Dayanand, Sunil and S Sanjib manning the forward line while the midfield consists of Zhaveer, Mahendra Mani and Rajendra Prasad which is quiet formidable," he said. "The defence consists of William Dcosta, Feroz, Sunil Kumar and Dhanesh while international goalkeeper Balaji will be under the bars. Jammu and Kashmir manager Nazir Ahmed admitted it would be a very tough match as Karnataka is one of the strongest teams in the fray. "Our main objective would be to snatch a point from them though my boys will have to work really hard to hold their forwards," he said. Deepak Sangral and Shabbir Ahmed are the two forwards to watch while their midfield consists of Intikhab Alam, Mansoor and Nazir Sr. The defence will be in the hands of Rakesh Sr, Bilal Ahmad, Javed Ahmad and Sajid Dar while their goalkeeper will be Sonu Kumar. In other cluster matches, Services will play Rajasthan while Manipur take on Himachal Pradesh in the second match at the University grounds. DURBAN, Oct 31: Indian batsman Rahul Dravid is fit to play in the first test against South Africa this week despite being diagnosed with a shoulder injury, team management said today. Dravid saw an orthopaedic surgeon in Cape Town on Monday to investigate pain in his right shoulder which has troubled him for the past four months. Dr Joe De Beer diagnosed Dravid with flat lesion syndrome and explained the injury as a shoulder cartilage rupture. However, Indian team manager MK Bhargava told Reuters today that Dravid would be considered for the first test, which starts in Bloemfontein on Saturday. Dravid is fit to play, Bhargava said. "The doctor did not advise him not to play - he is to take some precautions and if the problem worsens he will need surgery." South African left arm spinner Nicky Boje suffered a similar injury which, together with a knee problem, required surgery and kept him out of cricket for six months. India are likely to need Dravids experience in the first test. Their only match practice for the three match series, the three day tour match against a Presidents XI in Durban, was washed out without a ball bowled. Uncapped batsman Connor Williams, wicketkeeper Sameer Dighe, and fast bowlers Ashish Nehra and Zaheer Khan joined the squad after the limited overs triangular series and have yet to play any cricket on tour. The rain which has fallen in Durban almost every day since last Monday means India have been confined to the nets since the triangular series final at Kingsmead on Friday, which South Africa won by six wickets. "This investigation has revealed a legend in Labrum Glenohumeral Joint. However, his rotator cuff was found to be completly normal. This pathology is consistent with someone involved in a throwing sport," Bhargava said. "In the event the pathology degenerates in future, surgical management may become necessary. His condition would be closely monitored," he said. Dravid himself said he was not considering any surgery at this stage and would do throwing exercises as prescribed by the doctor. "Only if it degenerates in future, we would say (anything about surgery)," Dravid said. (PTI) |

Excelsior Sports Correspondent JAMMU, Oct 31: Defending champion Kamal Rohmetra and fourth seed Vishal Abrol won their respective ties in the senior Snooker quarter-finals league round in the 11th State Billiards and Snooker Championship being played at M A Stadium, here today. Kamal defeated Sunny Arora 3-1. It was not an easy win for Kamal, who was stopped on way to a straight frames win by Sunny, who won third frame with a handsome margin 60-19. After facing a tough resistance from the young cueist in the first frame, Kamal was far behind from Sunny in the fourth and final frame. In this frame, Sunny was playing at 35 as against just seven points in Kamals account. But, quite surprisingly, Kamal swapped the table adding 78 points in his tally and won the frame and the match also. Standing on the one end of the adjoining table, Sunny could not utter any word as he was in shock, however, he congratulated Kamal on his careers best 78 points break. The score: 57-46, 52-21, 19-60, 85-35. Besides the easy win, Kamal also achieved a milestone by becoming the first player to make 78 points break in match, said organising secretary, Sheetal Gandotra. In the second league tie in the same group, fourth seed Vishal Abrol trounced Arun Gulati in straight frames. First frame went in favour of Vishal without play because of the delayed arrival of Arun Gulati and subsequently the chief referee Mushtaq Ahmed awarded the frame to Vishal. The remaining two frames were clinched by Vishal rather easily making it a 3-0 win. Meanwhile, in junior boys Billiards quarter-finals league round, Manav Gulati, Jyoti Anand and Pallav won their respective ties. Manav Gulati beat promising Kuldeep Chaudhary with a narrow margin 174-162, while Jyoti Anand defeated Pallav 179-152. However, Pallav won his second league tie against Sheetal Bharti narrowly 155-147. In another scheduled match, Manav Gulati got walkover Somil Mahajan. |
50th All India Police
Hockey Championship Excelsior Sports Correspondent JAMMU, Oct 31: The Jammu and Kashmir Police today repeated its day one performance when they blanked Uttranchal 7-0 in their second league encounter in the ongoing 50th All India Police Hockey Championship being played at K K Hakhu Stadium, here. With todays emphatic victory, the Jammu and Kashmir Police has all set to top in Pool-E and reach the second round of quarter-finals. If one go through the pool position, J&K has won both the matches with 21 goal against and none for. While, Uttranchal and Chandigarh have one win each in their account after playing two matches each, Assam have lost both the matches they played so far. Even if, Chandigarh win the tie against Jammu and Kashmir Police scheduled for November 2, the J&K will top the pool on the basis of goal average. And in the knock-out round of quarter-finals, Jammu and Kashmir will take on the winner of Pool-F. Earlier, in the second league tie, Jammu and Kashmir Police completely dominated the field and never allowed the Uttranchal forward line to take position in formers goal-area. The pressure mounted by the hosts on the guests was quite evident from the fact that J&K goal-keeper touched the ball only once in the first half play. Three goals were scored in the first half. Iqbal Singh had opened the account for J&K converting a penalty corner into the goal in the very first minute. It was followed by the second goal out of Surinder Pal Singhs stick in the 8th minute. Mandeep Singh, who has surprised many with his extra-ordinary ability (being left-hander) of playing with both hands and scored six goals in the 14-0 victory over Assam, made third goal for J&K Police in the 19th minute. The score remained 3-0 at the end of the first half. After the breather, Uttranchal tried to ease the pressure and engaged the J&K forward line for around 10 minutes. But, it was the end of the patience of J&K attacking line, who broke down the opponents defence line and sounded the board in the 47th minute through Surinder Singh. Five minutes later, Surinder Pal Singh struck his second and fifth goal for the team after getting a pass from left flank. The remaining two goals were scored in the 62nd and 66th minute by Gurjeet Singh and Charanjit Singh respectively. Today J&K Police played most of their game on the right flank, where Gurjeet and Surinder Pal Singh were placed. In their attempts to strike from right flank they also missed a couple of sure goal chances. In another match of the Pool-E, Chandigarh defeated Assam by two goals to nil. Both the goals were scored in the second half after the first halfs lull. Balvinder Singh scored a field goal in the 37th minute, while Surinder Singh converted a penalty corner into the goal. However, Assam got seven penalty corners as compared to four in favour of Chandigarh. The league tie between Delhi and RPF also ended in a one-sided affair, after former beat RPF 8-0. Johnson mastermind the Delhis big win adding three goals to the tally. All the three goals were penalty corner conversions into the goal in the 20th, 33rd and 42nd minute. Daljeet Singh contributed two field goals in the 45th and 49th minute. Ishwar Dass too struck twice in the 25th and 64th minute. Eight goal, which came in the 66th minute, was scored by Subash Chander through penalty corner. Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) also won their tie beating Haryana 5-1. Leading by three goals in the first half, CISF maintained their spree in the remaining half too, but in the dying minutes Haryanas Lakhbir Singh succeeded in converting a penalty corner hit from right flank right into the goal (66th minute) and reduced the margin. The goal scorers were Cyril Ekka (13th), Paramvir (17th), Harish Sharma (33rd), Arvind Sharma (42nd) and G V Xaxa (44th). Two other scheduled matches for today ended in walkovers. Maharashtra got walkover Manipur, while West Bengal awarded walkover Mizoram. |
Caddicak, Croft to forfeit 25,000 Pound each LONDON, Oct 31: Paceman Andrew Caddick and spinner Robert Croft, who have pulled out of the England squad to tour India next month due to security fears, will have to forfeit at least 25,000 pound each. The pair will also have to wait until after the India tour to find out if they will suffer further financial penalty. As of now they have lost half their winter tour fee, and that figure will double if they are not selected for the trip to New Zealand in February, sources said today. The England and Wales Cricket Board, however, was keen to focus on the three players who decided to travel to India than dwell on the long-term future of the absentees. Marcus Trescothick, Ashley Giles and Craig White, all of whom expressed apprehensions about touring following the escalation of the conflict in Afghanistan, yesterday confirmed their availability. However, Giles and White will need to pass fitness tests next Wednesday. Giles put his chances of being fit at no higher than 50-50. The England squad is scheduled to reach India on November 14 for its 40-day three-test tour. Replacements for Caddick and Croft will be announced late in the week after discussions between chairman of selectors David Graveney, his co-selector Geoff Miller, skipper Nasser Hussain and coach Duncan Fletcher. Yorkshire pace bowler Chris Silverwood and Somersets Richard Johnson are in the fray to replace Caddick, and Jeremy Snape, who toured Zimbabwe with the one-day squad with some success recently, is likely to take Crofts place. Dr Joe De Beer, whom Dravid consulted in Cape Town diagnosed a ruptured shoulder cartilege and said the stylish batsman run the risk of aggravating the injury by playing in the test series.
