Check papers carefully

Sir,

It is only when incidents begin to form a pattern and are likely to have repercussions beyond the immediate scene that we pay special attention to them and are watchful of the consequences.

In a number of cases, it has been found that the students are asked to re-appear in certain papers because they have failed in the said papers by a few marks. Examiners should be very careful, agile and alert while marking the papers. Little do the examiners realize that they are playing with the lives and careers of students if they mark the papers casually. After the results are out some students are declared to have failed in some subjects and are asked to re-appear in those subjects by spending a good amount of money for re-evaluation. Some poor students cannot afford to spend the said among and remain as having failed in the examination. And those who are well off, fill in the forms for re-evaluation and get their papers re-evaluated and are afterwards declared as having passed. Whose fault is this? In the process some students are even forced to commit suicide under the circumstances and some run away from their houses. There are a good number of examples of this. Recenly an example came to my notice when the candidate was declared as having failed in two subjects. The said candidate was admonished by the parents. The candidate also remained without food for a couple of days. After getting money from somebody the candidate filled in the form for re-evaluation and it was later of found that the candidate was declared as successful. How sad and how bad it is.

Therefore, it becomes the imperative duty of the examiners to check the papers carefully, thoroughly with their minds, hearts and brains all working in unison so that the students do no suffer for no fault of theirs. No doubt it is true that the more number of papers are checked, the more money they will get but not at the cost of students' careers especially in these hard days.

Therefore, the authorities at the higher levels should debar such examiners from checking the papers for a period of five years as it has been truly said that humiliation is the greatest punishment for the learned. Moreover, there is another suggestion for the higher authorities and that is that the authorities should deduct the re-evaluation fee from such examiners and disburse to the candidate who has been declared as successful after -re-evaluations.

Face problems

Sir,

I liked the article "Defuse Destructive thoughts" by Joginder Singh, published in your esteemed paper.

We must have positive attitude. Escapism is not the solution of our problems. Till what time we will escape. According to Robert Louis Stevenson, "you cannot run away from a weakness, you must sometime fight it out or perish; and if that be so why not now."

Do things always happen as we plan them or with them to be. If they did, then the world would be a different and a much easier place to live. We must be prepared to face disappointments and failuers.

When unexpected damage wreakshavoc with your dreams, than what? Never dwell on what you have lost. If you do, you will be discouraged and defeated. Look not at what you have lost but at what you have left.

Always have faith in your self when the situation looks hopeless. Keep hoping when everyting looks impossible, refuse to accept defeat.

Involve UN

Sir,

About a month long military Campaign of America in Afghanistan seem to have not so effective impact in achieving the objective of destroying the Taliban and Laden's Al-Qaeda network.

The American strategy of waging a war against global terrorism has not received due support internationally. Russia, China and other major powerful countries exercised restraint in extending an open support to United States. America also went on with its own style and preferred wrongly the support, though conditional from a country like Pakistan which itself fosters the very roots of terrorism-America has suffered on September, 11,2001. On one had Pakistan decided to support its boss America and on the other hand sent thousands of armed tribals to Afghanistan to fight from Taliban against US coalition. How can one igore the remarks of a senior Pakistani Minister for interior affairs Moiuddin Haider, who is also a close confidant of General Musharraf that " Now the world including Pakistan has started thinking that whatever curretly is happening in Afghanistan is not good."

Let me remind the senior Minister and his boss President Musharraf as what were they expecting at the time when they decided to support US Military action against Talibans. The betrayal and sell out a Pakistani rulers in one place and lure and lust for power and money at other should be counted as main factors behind the bloodshed in Afghanistan where even innocent die.

Taliban, the creation of the US, has bitterly left its master thinking over the situation as how they can be tamed, which does not look so easy for the US. The major failure in achieving the objective by the US in Afghanistan is ignoring the support of India. Believing in Pakistan and doubting Indian honesty shall definitely hang heavily upon America. The only way to get rid of the terrorism whether local or global, lies in seeking Indian opinion and United Nations' strategic action. Each US bomb that hits on Afghan soil should not be counted a military success, at the Pentagon.
