Pak confirms participation in Dubai Hockey Tournament

LAHORE, May 28: Pakistan today confirmed its participation in the five-nation Dubai Hockey Tournament scheduled to be held in February next.

Other teams slated to take part are World and Olympic champion Holland, Olympic runners up South Korea, Australia and India.

While confirming its participation, the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) made it clear that it will not insist on India’s participation. "Our participation in the tourney has nothing to do with India, whether India take part or not, we will be there" PHF secretary Mussaratullah Khan said here.

However, the PHF secretary said the organisers of the tournament were confident that India would compete in the tournament.

Khan made this announcement after meeting with Cricketers Benefit Fund Series (CBFS) representative Zahid Noorani who is here in connection with the Asian Cricket Council meeting.

He said the CBSF representative has assured him that the tournament would be held in February come what May.

Khan expressed his surprise at India’s ambiguous stand about this tourney. "They (Indian Hockey Federation) should make their stand clear to end uncertainty about their participation". (UNI)

Sports Ministry pulls up cricket board president

NEW DELHI, May 28: Unhappy at the "unilateral announcement" that India would play Pakistan at Karachi during Asian Test Championship (ATC) in September, Sports Ministry has conveyed its displeasure to cricket board president A C Muthiah over the issue.

Taking exception to the reported assurance given by BCCI to the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Indian cricket team’s participation in ATC, Sports Minister Uma Bharti said the sports secretary has already conveyed the Ministry’s displeasure on this to board president A C Muthiah.

"They (BCCI) should not take so much liberty in making such announcements," she told reporters.

"To play in Pakistan, the Board for Control of Cricket in India (BCCI) has to first give a written proposal to the Sports Ministry which in turn would forward it to the Ministry of External Affairs. The final decision rests with MEA," Bharti said.

"No such proposal for the Indian cricket team’s tour to Pakistan in September to participate in the ATC has been received by the ministry," she said asking "where is the question of my reaction to the Pakistan board’s announcement that India will play against it’s team in Karachi."

Asked about the reports about India making some sort of goodwill gesture on the eve of Pakistan CEO Gen Parvez Musharraf’s visit, Bharti said "there is no such proposal with her ministry now.

"MEA will take decision about bilateral ties in the changed scenario and obviously cricketing ties would also figure in that," she said adding "when the ties through sports are to be discussed, the views of the Sports Ministry would be taken into account."

"Beyond this, what ever is being written in the media is a matter of pure speculation," she said.

However, she stressed that like arts and culture, sports too had a role in promoting bilateral ties of two countries.

Asked whether the Government’s decision not to play cricket with Pakistan in bilateral series had contributed to the further souring of relations, the Sports Minister said "the bilateral cricketing ties had nothing to do with the souring of the relations between the two countries.

"It was the souring of the relations which resulted in the snapping of bilateral cricketing ties," she added. (PTI)

Sasikiran draws first game

LAUSANNE (SWITZERLAND), May 27: Playing for the third place, grandmaster Krishnan Sasikiran drew the first game against international master Andrei Volokitin of Ukraine in the Olymic Young Masters Knockout Chess Tournament here.

In the fight for the coveted title, the first game between GM Etienne Bacrot of France and GM Bruzon Lazarov of Cuba also ended in a draw after a tense struggle.

Double GM-norm holder IM P Harikrishna, already smarting under defeat at the hands of L Aronian in tie-break game of the previous round, failed yet again as he lost to Chinese GM Bu Xiangzhi in the first game playoff for the 7-8 place.

After losing in the semi-final to Bacrot, Sasikiran employed the Sicilian Nazdorf variation with black pieces and faced the classical structure. Volokitin, who has had a tremendous run in the first half of the tournament, ventured into wild complications in the middlegame by going for a kingside attack.

Sasikiran’s counter-attack came in the form of tremendous piece play on both flanks. A strike in the centre by Volokitin transformed the game into a rook and pawn ending wherein Sasikiran had a better placed rook and an extra pawn but Volokitin’s passed queen knight pawn compensated for the minor material deficit.

Sasikiran then readied himself to give back the pawn at the cost of the passer but with a result not in sight, the draw was soon agreed to. In the return match tomorrow, Sasikiran will have the advantage of white pieces.

Harikrishna wanted to get into the intricacies of the semislav defence with black pieces but Xiangzhi was obviously not game for a tactical battle.

The transposition to the exchange variation of the queen’s gambit declined was a natural choice and Xiangzhi got a slight advantage in the middlegame.

Harikrishna traded on thin ice once he allowed white pawns to roll on the king side and his counterplay bid on either flank of the board did not get the desired position.

Xiangzhi, on the contrary, played imaginatively and continued exerting pressure on the vulnerable king side with all his pieces. Harikrishna confined himself to the uphill defensive task but consistent attack on the king side cost him a pawn.

The queens got traded but Xiangzhi managed to penetrate the seventh rank with his rook and as his king made a foray along the king rook file to force checkmate, Harikrishna called it a day.

GM Ruslan Ponomariov of Ukraine drew with GM Levon Aronian of Armenia in the first game for the 5th place. The off-beat opening choice in the ruy lopez apparently surprised Ponomariov and the pieces got exchanged at regular intervals and truce was the natural result.

Playing white, Bacrot did not get much against the solid play of Lazaro in the queens gambit declined. The opposite side castling by Bacrot did not enthuse life in the game as a couple of minor pieces got exchanged early in the middlegame. Bacrot had to contend himself with a draw after 73 moves.
