Fire in Army depot

Sir,

This is with respect to news item in the DE dated 29.4.2001. Fire that broke out in the Army's ammunition depot at Pathankot Cantt a few days back is a matter of serious concern for the Defence authorities and the Government is particular as well as the general public living in and around the Depot. It was in fact a horrowing night for the people living in the adjacent areas and Pathankot city who were seen scurrying to safer places not knowing exactly what has actually happened. They would not be able to forget this terrible and traumatic experience perhaps first of its kind in the lives of many.

Thank God that this time no perious life was lost in this ravaging fire though ammunition worth crores of rupees is reported to have been destroyed due to this incident.

We still remember that exactly one year before, similar fire had broken out in the Bharatpur Army's ammunition depot in Rajasthan were too ammunition worth crores of rupees was gutted in fire besides loss some precious human lives. Such incidents result in depletion of our defence arsenals which could at times effect adversely the combatant power in the fight against the nefarious designs of the forces inimical to the country.

Therefore, all the aspects leading to such events be thoroughly looked into/investigated by the authorities concerned and adequate suitable measures taken in order to avoid recurrence of such incidents in future.

Food adulteration

Sir,

The adulteration of food articles is rampant in the country and has become a health hazard. Anti-social and anti-nation elements are selling adulterated food articles which tend to breed mistrust among the citizens. Fraudulently seeling adulterated food affects the health of whole nation including children on whom depends the future of the country.

Adulterated food articles are injurious to health and cause so many fatal diseases such as adulteration of argemone oil in mustard oil causes blindness, heart attack and dropsy and mineral oils damage the liver and cause cancer. The adulteration of Kesari dal in herhar and Dal chana causes ly- therism. Lead chromate in turmeric causes blood pressure, blindness and epilepsy. Similary, non edible colours in sweets and soft drinks cause cancer and damage liver. Adulteration of extraneous matters in chilly Power and spices produce abdominal disorders.

Keeping in view the gravity of the problem and the growing danger which it poses to the health of the nation, it is urged upon the general public through your esteened paper to make the people aware of such evil designs of the unscrupulous and dishonest traders and help the concerned authorities in eradicating the prevailing menace of adulteration from the society.

Yours etc..
