grain production comes down to NEW DELHI, May 26: Indias foodgrain production is estimated to come down to 196 million tonnes in 2000-01, a fall of about 10 million tonnes as compared to last year, Agriculture Minister Nitish Kumar said today. Speaking at a seminar on "agriculture in the 21st century" organised by (TERI) here, the minister said eastern and north eastern India hold out promise for steep increase in foodgrain production in the country. Green revolution must be extended to these regions, he said. Describing the fall in production as a disturbing feature, he said he was pained at "the allegation of huge foodgrain surpluses that stare at the1 face of starvation situation". Mr Nitish Kumar clarified that the country, in fact, did not have surplus foodgrains but such a situation arose because of lack of any uniform distribution policy at the national level. TETI Director General R K Pachauri said the country was experiencing a paradox-suplus foodgrains amidst rampant malnutrition effecting over one-third of the total population. (UNI) |
Rajasthan Govt refuses to lower hiked power tariff JODHPUR, May 26: Rajasthan Government today expressed its inability to reduce the power tariff, recently hiked by the independent electricity regulatory authority. State Government cannot review the tariff recommended by the authority, established under the power sector reform legislation, Energy Minister Chandra Bhan told reporters. Reacting to the agitation launched by the BJP against the tariff hike, Bhan said the opposition, instead of resorting to agitation, should file a review petition before the regulatory authority or move the High Court for relief. Bhan said the State Government was already giving subsidy to the tune of Rs.1,300 crores in power sector. Expressing Governments firm resolve to sternly deal with those stealing electricity or not paying bills, he said in many rural areas 80 to 90 per cent of the villagers were not paying bills. During the current drive against power theft, he said, service had been disconnected in about 2,000 villages where people had not been paying bills for the last five or six years and their arrears had mounted to Rs.660 crores. The minister said maximum power theft had been detected in the districts of Dholpur, Nagaur and Baran where entire connections of 150 villages had been severed by the vigilance teams. He said meters were being installed at every grid sub station for power auditing and to find the exact localities where electricity thefts occur. The exercise would yield good result soon. Bhan disputed the BJP leaders claims that transmission and distribution losses in the state have increased substantially after Congress came to power. The losses were as high as between 40 to 45 per cent during the BJP regime also. He said the National Power Corporation and the National Hydel Power Corporation, the two profit making central sector undretakings, should lower their electricity supply charges to help the states. He said many other states, including Andhra Pradesh, owed huge amounts to the two PSUs, but despite Rajasthans good track record of payment of its dues in time the desert state was being branded as defaulter.
