IHF sends official to Dubai for match

DUBAI, May 10: The Indo-Pak hockey series could well be on the card at Dubai in February next year as the Indian Hockey Federation (IHF) sent an official to Dubai for holding discussions with the UAE Hockey Committee regarding the staging of an Indo-Pak hockey series here.

Mr K Dorai Swamy, an IHF national-level umpire, said he had been asked by IHF secretary Jyotikumaran to meet the UAE officials in connection with the proposed series. "After my initial discussions, Jyotikumaran will be personally arriving here to meet the UAE hockey officials," he told Gulf news.

Mr Reze Abdi, the coordinator of the UAE Hockey Committee, said "we are delighted at the arrival of an IHF official for discussions. Mr Swamy will be meeting major Saeed Al Suweidi, the honorary secretary of the UAE Hockey Committee tomorrow," he added.

Mr Abdi said the Dubai ruler’s office had recently given permission for staging the hockey series between India and Pakistan. "Our preparations for hosting the even will commence soon," he added.

The hockey series between the two countries was earlier planned for April-May this year but had to be postponed because the facilities were not ready.

The hockey series is likely to attract a large number of expatriates from the two countries and may become as popular as the cricket tournament hosted by the Cricketers’ Benefit Fund Series (CBFS) at Sharjah. The CBFS is also assisting the UAE Hockey Committee in making preparations for the hockey series.

India Sports Minister Uma Bharati has gone on record, stating that India has no problem playing with Pakistan in games other than cricket.

Mr Swamy, who has been the director of Digvijay Singh Babu Tournament and was also the coordintaor of the SAF Games held in Chennai, observed that Indian hockey was regaining its popularity.

India’s recent victory over Pakistan in Dhaka has been a big boost. It is wrong to say that the standard of Indian hockey or that of Asian hockey has slipped.

Asian teams produce the maximum number of penalty corners but they are unable to convert them. This handicap has favoured their opponents. There is plenty of talent in Asia, especially in India, he added. (UNI)

Waugh says players won’t hang around for cash

MELBOURNE, May 10: The prospect of becoming a millionaire under the new four-year Australian Cricket Board (ACB) salary deal will not lead to older test cricketers playing on just for the cash, Australia captain Steve Waugh said today.

"Money shouldn’t influence how long you play and I think that will show through," Waugh told reporters in Melbourne. "If someone is playing for money, their performances won’t be up to scratch."

" And If I’m not good enough, I don’t want to be there," he added.

The ACB said on Wednesday that they expected Australia would have its first millionaire cricketer within the four-year lifetime of the new salary deal.

Waugh and twin brother Mark will turn 36 next month on the ashes tour of England and both have kept their options open for Australia’s World Cup defence in South Africa in 2003.

The ACB announced a list of 25 contracted players for the 2001-02 season on May 1. The players will now be ranked from one to 25, and the top player could earn a one million dollars (520,000 dollars) over the four years of the agreement.

ACB public affairs manager Brendan McClements said on Wednesday that players who postponed retirement to chase the big salaries would still have to produce results on the field to meet rankings requirements as set down by selectors.

Waugh said the players were happy with the deal, which was negotiated on their behalf by the Australian cricketers’ Association (ACA) chief executive Tim May.

"It’s something we’ve been working on for a while and I think it’s obviously fair because the cricket board have agreed with the ACA," Waugh said.

Speculation as to which player will benefit most from the new deal has centred on vice-captain Adam Gilchrist, batsman Ricky Ponting and fast bowler Brett Lee.

"There’s guys who are doing pretty well, but Brett Lee would have to be at pretty short odds I think," Waugh said.

"Good luck to them whoever it is. You never know, it might be Steve Waugh," he added. (REUTERS)

Safin’s slump continues in Rome

ROME, May 10: Marat Safin’s demons continued to haunt him as he was bundled out of the 2.95 million dollar Rome Masters by teenager Roger Federer.

The second-seeded Russian threw away a commanding position before succumbing 4-6 6-4 7-6 yesterday to his Swiss opponent in a thrilling second round match.

Safin is one of 10 seeds to have fallen already, but top seed and world number one Gustavo Kuerten avoided a similar fate in style.

The Brazilian demolished former French Open champion Michael Chang of the United States 6-1 6-1 under the floodlights of the Foro Italico in their second round match.

Federer, 19, was joined in the third round by Spanish qualifier Jacobo Diaz, who beat Russian sixth seed Yevgeny Kafelnikov in the surprise of the day.

There were also wins for eighth seed Juan Carlos Ferrero of Spain, Italian Wildcard Federico Luzzi and Ecuador’s Nicolas Lapentti.

But British ninth seed Tim Henman surrendered meekly to Frenchman Julien Boutter 2-6 6-3 6-4.

Seventh seed Lleyton Hewitt of Australia beat Germany’s Tommy Haas to set up a third round meeting with bitter rival Alex Corretja of Spain.

Shoulder injury

Safin, who has been nursing a shoulder injury since February, was left with a mediocre 10-10 win-loss record for the year and still searching for his touch ahead of the French Open.

The Russian believes he can enjoy a resurgence in fortune, but there are few signs he can rescue his year in the manner which captivated the tour 12 months ago.

In 2000, he suffered 11 defeats out of his first 16 matches before May.

But he found inspiration on the European clay and went on to secure seven singles titles, including the U S Open, as he narrowly missed out on finishing the year as world number one.

His first round triumph over Swede Jonas Bjorkman here on Tuesday ended a run of four defeats stretching back to February.

But there was a certain inevitability about Safin’s third successive second round defeat in Rome.

"Everyone is waiting for me to do something this year," the 21-year-old said.

"For some reason, I can’t do it right now. I think I have been unlucky with the injury, but I must work hard with my coach (mats wilander) to put things right".

"The shoulder is feeling perfect now and hopefully I have enough time to play well before the French."

Federer, who plays South African Wayne Ferreira in the third round, said: "You never know what’s going to come next with Marat".

"He is not playing at the top of his form and he gets cross when it doesn’t work, but this is still a great result for me. It gives me confidence on clay before the French Open."

Diaz, 149th in the ATP champions race, beat Kafelnikov 7-6 (7-3) 1-6 7-5 to earn a third round match against Luzzi.

Luzzi, the 21-year-old conqueror of French 11th seed Arnaud Clement, was inspired again by a Partisan home crowd as he beat Moroccan Hicham Arazi 6-3 7-6 (7-3).

Lapentti came back from 5-2 down in the third set to oust rising Argentine star Guillermo Coria 3-6 6-3 7-5 in two hours, 26 minutes, while Ferrero swept past 1998 Rome champion Marcelo Rios 6-1 6-3. (REUTERS)

Seles, Dementieva pull out of Rome women’s event

ROME, May 10: American defending champion Monica Seles joined the list of injury victims for next week’s Italian Open as she withdrew with a foot injury.

Russian Elena Dementieva pulled out of the 1.2 million dollar tournament as well hurt as well.

The event has already lost both of the Williams sisters, with younger sibling Serena pulling out citing a knee injury.

The announcement from the American teenager yesterday, a former US Open champion, came three days after her elder sister also withdrew hurt last week.

Venus Williams won a title in Hamburg at the weekend and is playing this week in Berlin, but told Rome officials late last week she would not be present at the Foro Italico.

Heading the remaining field are world number 1 Martina Hingis and Australian Open winner Jennifer Capriati.(DPA)
