Bail granted to Director IPP in two graft cases

JAMMU, May 5: Special Judge Anti-Corruption Jammu, Vikas Kant Gupta has granted bail to I S Wazir, the then Director IPP-VII Jammu in a corruption case registered against him by Vigilance Organization.

On October 26, 1998, the Vigilance Organization on a complaint of S K Chopra, president Surgical Traders Association Jammu lodged a case for purchase of articles on higher rates. It was found that the officer had purchased 75 hydraulic operator tables and equal number of shadowless operation lights amounting to over rupees 23 lakh and over rupees 27 lakh respectively by paying exhorbtant rates and without observing codal formalities and by manipulating and fabricating the official record.

In another FIR registered on April 21 this year against Wazir, Vikram Dawan, Accounts Officer and proprietor of M/s Trades India and A-Von Surgical Private Limited of Delhi, it was alleged that the then Director had purchased items at exhorbitant rates and showed favour to M/s Trade India by illegal means and Accounts Officer facilitated the drawal of the bills.

Cultural Academy organises cultural Mela at Kuppar

JAMMU, May 5: The J&K Academy of Art, Culture and Languages organised a Cultural Mela at village Kuppar Pargalta in which a large number of local people participated.

As per a release the Mela was formally inaugurated by Additional Secretary of the Academy Dr Om Goswami near the temple of famous local deity Baba Milk Dev.

The Mela comprised of rural Mushiara, folk music programme and traditional songs. Besides this a book exhibition and display of Academy Cassettes were also arranged. Local poets who recited their poems in the Mushaira were Messrs Surinder Singh Manhas, Barkat Ali Bagri, Rajinder Kumar Sharma, Ashok Sharma, Sansar Chand, Janak Raj, Nanak Chand, Subash Sumbria, Bishan Dass, Kamal Verma, Manohar Sambyal, Mrs Sapna Devi, Mrs Pooja Devi and Kumari Narain Devi. The folk singers Dharam Chand and Party and Des Raj and Party presented their bewitching songs in their melodious voice.

On behalf of Kuppar Pargalta Dogri Sabha, the local parties of folk singers presented their items. Jamba Ram and Party, Bishan Dass and Party, Shounku Ram and Party and Hans Raj and Party also participated.

In the Mela senior local poets namely Sunder Dass Manhas and Ashok Sharma were honoured on behalf of the Academy by Dr Goswami and were presented a set of books. Local schools also participated in the Mela in a big way. The child artists also gave their performances. Mohni Devi and Vandana Kumari of Government Primary School Chak Largan sang Dogri folk songs whereas Safia Khatoon of National Public School Bajalta presented a Gojri poem. Swaran Devi of the same school sang a famous song. Kumari Sapna, Rocky and Rajesh of Chetan Academy of Kuppar presented folk and literary songs in Dogri, Sapna Kumari and Nisha Kumari of GPS Kuppar presented an item of dance in full traditional dress on the tune of a famous song. All the child artists were individually presented an issue of Sheeraza "Bal Ank" as token of encouragement by Dr Om Goswami, Mr R R Sharma and, Sarpanch of the area. The programme was presided over by Ch Rehmat Ali Sarpanch. Proceedings of the programme were conducted by Editor (D) Dr Gian Singh.

BSP for implementation of Mandal Commission Report

JAMMU, May 5: A meeting of BSP Jammu district urban was held under the chairmanship of Mr Mohan Lal Bhagat, convenor BSP Jammu district urban wherein Mr Hans Raj Chargotra vice-president of the BSP was the chief guest and Mr Roop Lal general secretary BSP was guest of honour while Mr Pawan Kumar Manni was the special invitee.

According to a press release, in the meeting it was decided to gear up the party activities within Jammu district and for their purpose serious of meeting programmes has been chalked out. Such meetings will be organised at different localities to educate the people regarding the mission of Dr B R Ambedkar and programme of social transformation launched by Mr Kanshi Ram.

It was also resolved that the party will educate the people and compel the State Government to implement the Mandal Commission Report which provides 27 percent reservation for socially and educationally backward classes and political reservation in the Legislative Assembly for Scheduled Tribe and reservation for Scheduled Caste in divisional and district level recruitment in proportionate to their population in a respective district or division. Meeting also took serious note of the atrocities committed on Dalit in Jammu region.

Addressing civic reception function organised by Nari Jagriti Kalyan Sangthan at Samba here today, Babu Parmanand complimented the organisers for organise function to create awareness among women. He was of the view that for empowerment of women these types of functions were essential at rural and backward areas.

Babu Parmanand urged the people to eradicate the evils of corruption, indiscipline and red-tapism from the society and to perform their duty honestly with devotion and dedication for strengthening the national unity and integrity. Mrs Santosh Kumari wife of the Governor was also present in the function.

Ch. Piara Singh, MLA, Mrs Rani Bhagat, Mrs Suresh Jamwal, Kashmira Singh and Ramesh Gupta also addressed the function. Governor and his wife distributed school dresses and clothes to 350 children and 150 women of the area.

Mata Vaishno Devi yatra

Katra, May 4: Over 13.79 lakh pilgrims from various parts of the country so far visited the holy cave shrine of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi ji since January this year.

During the corresponding period last year, only 12 lakh pilgrims had darshan of the holy cave shrine.

In the month of April, alone about 5.11 lakh devotees paid their obeisance at the holy cave shrine. Of them, 4.36 lakh were from outside the State.

Presently, 12,000 to 13,000 pilgrims are daily reaching at the base camp Katra for their onward journey to the holy cave shrine.

JAMMU, May 5: Minister of State for Rural Development Mr Ajay Sadhotra said the State Government is fully committed to strengthen extra-curricular activities in the educational institutions in Jammu and Kashmir State.

Speaking at the Annual Classical Dance Festival, organised by the Presentation Convent Senior Secondary School, Gandhi Nagar, here today, the Minister said that such activities promote both the physical and mental faculties of the students.

The Minister said that in rural and far-flung areas, traditional dances are performed by the folk dancers are quite attractive and have unique place in our cultural heritage. The local masses too enjoy these performances.

Expressing need for further promotion of our folk arts and dances, the Minister called upon the Academy of Arts, Culture and Languages to make concerted endeavours to promote the hidden talents of our people.

The Minister said that the youth should be sensitized about the valuable wealth by the western culture blindly, but take pride in their own rich classical music and arts.

The Minister appreciated the performance of the students for displaying a very impressive classical dances based on Kathak and Bharatnatyam. He also complimented the staff for organising such a mega classical event.

The schools which participated in the festival include Presentation Convent Secondary School, Delhi Public School, K C Public School, BSF Secondary School, Little Flower, Maharishi Vidya Mandir, Atman High School, Shastri Memorial, St. Peter's High School and Guru Harikrishan Public School.

The BSF Senior Secondary School, Presentation Convent Secondary School and Atman High School bagged 1st, 2nd and 3rd position respectively.

Mr Ajay Sadhotra distributed the prizes among the students.

Sharma urges Govt to provide basic amenities to people

JAMMU, May 5: Mr Dharam Pal Sharma, senior Congress leader and former MP, stressed on the Government urged the Government to provide free ration and fodder for their cattle in the areas severely affected by drought in areas of Akhnoor tehsil.

As per a release Mr Sharma was addressing a largely attended meeting of party workers and newly elected Panchayat representatives of Kaink Jagir and Gurah Jagir as also of adjoining areas yesterday. He said it was an irony that the Government which has miserably failed to provide basic amenities to the people was spending lavishly on unproductive sector, which was evident from each department constructing Bhavans at Railway siding at Jammu and on purchases of Choppers etc while common people were claimouring for basic amenities of life.

He said at village Tall there was no water supply as the transformer as the tubewell motor burnt over three months ago has not been replaced so far. Same was the case with Dhok Khalsa, where the motor was burnt about a month back and the people reeling under the acute scarcity of water.

Mr Sharma urged the PHE Department to hire water tankers to supply water in the areas where the natural commodity is in scarce. He said it is heard that Government was giving some relief package to drought hit areas but so far nothing has been done.

The Sarpanchs of Kaink Jagir and Gurah Jagir namely Nek Ram and Faiju Ram as also a large number of other elected representatives and women leaders participated in the meeting.

Later Mr Sharma met the Chief Engineer PHE Department who promised to pay a visit to the affected areas soon.

Rejection of peace talks exposes Hurriyat: Beg

JAMMU, May 5: Former Minister and National Conference leader Dr Mehboob Beg today said the leaders of All Party Hurriyat Conference (APHC) have been exposed before the masses after rejection of peace talks offer made by the Centre.

In a statement issued here today, he said this has now proved beyond doubt that Hurriyat is not well wisher of the people of Kashmir valley and it is not interested in the restoration of peace in the trouble torn State.

Dr Beg said had it not been so the Hurriyat leadership would not have rejected the peace talks offer made by the Central Government emissary Mr K C Pant.

He while ridiculing the Hurriyat leadership urged the people to strengthen the hands of the National Conference, chief Dr Farooq Abdullah who despite facing all odds is working tirelessly for restoration of peace and normalcy in the state.

Recalling the role of NC , Dr Beg said the Party has been championing the cause of the people of the state over last eight decades and made many sacrifices in pre independence and post independence period for the welfare of people of the State.

He said NC always felt the pain when the masses were in trouble and jumping in poll fray in 1996 was not to gain power but to lick the scars of masses to which the Party will be always committed.

Inset opening Jammu Centre today

JAMMU, May 5: The Inset, a division of IIHT Network Limited is opening its Centre here tomorrow.

Having its over 100 Centres coming up in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Orissa, and Maharashtra, the Centre at Jammu will be the first Centre of Inset Chain being opened in Jammu and Kashmir.

Disclosing this at a press conference here today, Director Inset, Piyush Shukla said that the Centre at Jammu will be functioning from 313-Rehari Colony Jammu from tomorrow. It will be inaugurated by Minister of State for Agriculture, Mr Ram Pal.

Shukla said that at Inset, the students will be offered various courses related to Internet and e-Commerce which include Distribution Point for e-Commerce, Business of Body Shopping in Areas of Software Development related to Internet and e-Commerce, Marketing of Various Software Packages related to e-Commerce, Web Hosting Services and e-mail and e-Fax Services.

The Courses, the Director said, will be offered ranging from seven days to 36 months with target persons of age groups from six years to 60 years. The courses offered cover entire spectrum starting from usage of application development related to e-Commerce.

Besides, there will be courses for school students and housewives, career courses for 10+2 pass outs/graduation students and professional courses for software professionals interested in upgrading their skills.

He claimed that Inset centres are fully equipped with computer lab, web camera, scanner and printer, internet lab with video conferencing facility, over-head projector,colour TV and VCP and multi-media kit with colour monitor.

He said that the Inset has also started offering electro-medical centres from various hardware training Centres and the students can get enrolled for these courses from IIHT-Jammu and IIHT Srinagar Centres.

Shukla further said that in order to provide better and prompt support to all centres and to have a complete check on the quality of education, the Inset is planning to establish eight independent regional offices. The offices at Patna, Bhubaneshwar, Kanpur and Nagpur are already in operation , he said.

Jammu Center Director Ajay Kumar Gupta and Director Rajesh Gupta were also present at the press conference.

Kitchloo distributes sewing machines among widows

JAMMU, May 5: The Minister for Social Welfare, Mr Bashir Ahmed Kitchloo distributed 115 sewing machines among widows and physically handicapped persons here today. He also gave away State Awards to 19 Anganwari workers for their meritorious services. The award carries a cash of Rs. 25,000 and a certificate.

The Minister of State for Rural Development, Mr. Ajay Sadhotra was also present on the occasion.

Addressing on the occasion, Mr Kitchloo said that the Government was committed to the upliftment of the weaker sections of the society. He said that various schemes have been launched by the Central and State Governments for the welfare of the poor and destitutes. He called upon the NGO's to come forward and help the Government in accelerating the execution of these schemes particularly in rural and far-flung areas. The Government, he said has been making every endeavour to make available funds for the purpose. He exhorted upon the people to take optimum benefit of the schemes being implemented by the Social Welfare Department for the welfare of poor people.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr Sadhotra said Government is committed to raise the living standard of the people living below poverty line. He said various poverty alleviation schemes have been launched by the State and Central Governments. He said old age pension scheme is a big support to the old persons having little or no income. He said that the Centre has not released the funds for the purpose so far. However, he assured that he will personally pursue the case with the Union Minister for Rural Development for immediate release of the funds under this scheme. He said that the basic aim to provide sewing machines to the widows and handicapped persons is that they could earn livelihood for their families. He also stressed upon the beneficiaries to make judicious use of facilities being provided to them under various schemes.

Among others who spoke on the occasion included legislators Smt Zabiada Salaria, Bimba Luthra and Ms Bhupinder Kaur. Mr JS Jamwal, MLC was also present on the occasion.

Ajat exhorts women to fight for their rights

JAMMU, May 5: The Minister for Information and Transport, Mr Ajatshatru Singh has said that the State Government has resolved to involve the Panchayat members in planning, implementing and executing of development programs of their respective areas.

Addressing a public gathering at Dammi in Nagrota constituency after inaugurating a Dug-well today, he said the successful conduct of panchayat elections after a log gap of 23 years was one of the major achievements of the present Government. He called on the women folk to come forward and fight for their rights. He referred the happenings of dozens of dowry deaths every day in our country and said it was a blot on our society. He said unless women break their shackles they can not derive the benefits of development.

Mr Singh said, the State Government is committed to give 33 per cent reservation to women in every field of life so that their greater participation in the development of the state is ensured. Mr Singh was awed by the courage of a women of the village who came on the stage and gave a detailed account of the problems of her area.

Referring the demands of opening and upgradation of schools in Dammi and Panjgrain, the Minister said a proposal to this effect will be put before the District Development Board. He expressed the hope that this demand will be given due consideration.

The Minister disclosed that 18 projects are being taken up under Pradhan Mantri Gram Sarak Yojna in Dansal block. He said construction work on Nagrota-Dammi road will shortly be executed and other water supply schemes of the area are also being taken up under NABARD.

He revealed that about Rs 50 lakhs have been spent on various development schemes in Jagti and Simble Lehar areas of Nagrota constituency during the last couple of years.

Mr Rameshwar Dutt, block president, NC, while speaking on the occasion said that Dammi, Panjgrain, Dug-well with a discharge capacity of 50,000 gallons per day has been constructed under Rural Water Supply Scheme at a cost of Rs. 46.50 lakhs, which will benefit about 2300 souls including 1085 souls of Panjgrain, 586 of Dammi and 529 souls of floating population.

The Chief Engineer PHE, Mr T R Gupta, Executive Engineer,PHE, Mr V K Abrol and AEE, Mechanical, Mr B B Gupta accompanied the Minister.

At the public meeting Ch Barkat Ali, District Vice-President, NC, Mr Amir Singh, Mr Thoru Ram, Mr Iqbal, Subedar Asha Ram, Sarpanches and Ms Sunita Devi also spoke on the occasion.

Nengroo launches Annapurna, Antyodaya schemes

JAMMU, May 5: As many as 7000 families are being covered under Annapurna while 1210 beneficiaries will be covered under Antyodaya schemes during the current financial year in Jammu district.

This was stated by the Minister of State for Food and Supplies, Mr B A Nengroo while formally launching two schemes at Akhnoor today.

Distributing rice to poorest of the poor under Annapurna scheme, the Minister said that under this centrally sponsored scheme the persons over 60 years of age are entitled to get free ration from the Government. Similarly, he said under Antyodaya scheme poor people can get rice at subsidized rate of Rs 3 per kg.

Cautioning people against the machination of the anti-national elements, Mr Nengroo said that our neighbour is trying to disturb the peaceful atmosphere of the State in the name of religion. However, he said the people of the state keeping aloft the secular traditions foiled all such attempts.

Referring to the development scenario, Mr Nengroo said that the militancy had destroyed the economy of the State. However, with the concerted efforts of the present Government headed by Dr Abduallah the development activities are going on in the all the parts of the State with full steam. He asked the people to extend their cooperation to the Government so that the development process is further accelerated.

The Minister also announced that a Rest House will be constructed at Akhnoor for which the government will provide Rs 30 lakhs. Mr. Govind Ram, MLA announced donation of Rs 2 lakhs for the construction of the Rest House out of his Constituency Development Fund.
