Wasim and Waqar back in tandem for Pak

NOTTINGHAM (England), May 4: Pakistan renewed the bowling partnership of Wasim Akram alongside skipper Waqar Younis against a British Universities Eleven in the opening match of their England tour today.

Off-spinner Saqlain Mushtaq, however, was left out of the line-up for the three-day match along with all-rounder Abdur Razzaq.

Leg-spinner Mushtaq Ahmed was selected as the specialist slow bowler, while new pace discovery Mohammad Sami makes up the seam attack.

Waqar and Wasim made up the most feared opening bowling partnership in the early 1990s before the two fell out.

Waqar said yesterday that his feud with former captain Wasim —who Waqar accused of wrecking his career in 1999 by sidelining him from the team for several seasons — was in the past.

The new Pakistan skipper added that he wanted his former rival in the test team.

"I don’t want to talk about the past," Waqar said. "What happened happened. I want to look forward."

British Universities won the toss and elected to bat.

Pakistan play England in two tests before taking part in a triangular one-day series also involving Australia.

India-USA Davis Cup tie to be held in N Carolina

LONDON, May 4: Winston-Salem in North Carolina will be the venue for the India-USA Davis Cup world group qualifying round tie, according to hosts, the United States Tennis Association.

The event, slated for September 21-23, will feature India’s crack duo Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupthi but the US team is yet to be announced, as per information received here.

Earlier this year, the United States was defeated by Switzerland 3-2 in the first round of the 2001 Davis Cup in Basel, Switzerland. As a result, the US team must defeat India, who qualified for the playoff after defeating Japan 3-2 in the Asia-Oceania zone second round tie in Tokyo last month, in this crucial tie to stay in Davis Cup world group 2002.

The loser of the tie will be forced to play in zonal competitions in 2002.

US captain Patrick McEnroe had remarked after the draw on April 11, "India is one of the traditional powers in Davis Cup play and will be a tough obstacle for us."

The US team has won all six of its previous Davis Cup matches against India, the most recent being its 5-0 victory in New Delhi in 1994. (PTI)

Except India no country tried to curb match-fixing: ACU

ISLAMABAD, May 4: The interim report of the International Cricket Council’s Anti-Corruption Unit has said only India made whole-hearted efforts to curb match-fixing while all other cricket-playing countries dragged their feet despite evidence about the involvement of their players, a Pakistani newspaper has reported.

The interim report of ACU, headed Paul Condon, which was handed over to Lord Griffiths, Chairman of ICC’s Code of Conduct Commission two days ago, said only India has been seen making wholehearted efforts to curb match-fixing, the ‘Dawn’ newspaper said.

A number of countries including South Africa, Sri Lanka, New Zealand and the West Indies have been dragging their feet despite increasing evidence that some of their leading players were involved in misconduct, it said.

The ‘Dawn’ however, did not disclose how it got the report nor did it attribute the report to any source.

The ACU report would be made public on May 23, to make ICC members to pay more attention (to the problem), it said.

The report is said to have revealed that match-fixing is still rife in international cricket despite a year of allegations, admissions, inquiries and punishments. It is being whispered that the condon panel has found that match-fixing occurred as recently as in the one-day series featuring Pakistan in New Zealand in March and April, it said.

Sacked coach Javed Miandad had also alleged match-fixing in the series which he later denied.

Condon and his team of former police officers are said to have concluded that some players, umpires and officials are so deeply involved with the criminal element they cannot stop co-operating for fear of their lives and property, the newspaper report said.

ACU has reportedly not mentioned any player by name although it uncovered a great deal of evidence, particularly concerning South Africa and Pakistan, it said. Sir Paul may also ask for wider powers of investigation when the ICC executive board meets in London in June so that ACU can take action against individual players, it said. (PTI)

Medal tally of cue sports in Asian Games reduced

NEW DELHI, May 4: Billiards will not figure in the next year’s Pusan Asian Games though the cue sports events have been included with a drastic cut in their medal tally.

There were 30 medals (10 gold, 10 silver and 10 bronze) for the cue sports-billiards, snooker, pool and carrom-in the 13th Asian Games in Bangkok in 1998 but for Pusan Games the tally has been reduced to 2 each (2 snooker, 2 pool and 2 carom).

Billiards and Snooker Federation of India (BSFI) today urged the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) to restore the medal tally.

A bsfi delegation led by its president S N Sinha called on OCA secretary general Randhir Singh seeking his support for restoration of the status quo.

In the Bangkok Asiad cue sports was introduced for the first time and India won two gold, a silver and a bronze.

According to BSFI vice president Ravi Tandon, the OCA secretary general assured the delegation that he will strongly recommend the inclusion of billiards in the game.

Randhir Singh also told the delegation that he will take up the issue in the OCA meeting on May 12.

BSFI officials told Randhir Singh that Indian players have been training hard for the Pusan Asiad and added we are confident of winning six medals in Pusan. (UNI)
