Ikk Ladai Hor
A Mirror of its Times

By Ravinder Kaul

Duggar Manch is a theatre group with a mission. The group has performed its street plays in more than 500 villages in Jammu region of J&K State in order to create an awakening among the masses about social evils and the hapless condition of the masses. All the plays of the group are invariably based on some important issue relating to the people of this vast nation in general and the populace of the Dogra land in particular.

Ikk Ladai Hor, presented by the group in the ongoing Natyotsav, being jointly organised by Sangeet Natak Akademi, New Delhi and the J&K Academy of Art, Culture and Languages at the Abhinav Theatre, represented an extension of the philosophy of Duggar Manch. Committed theatre, whatever purists may say about it, has come to stay in India. The aesthetics take a back seat in this kind of theatre and content becomes the all important ingredient.

The play is a critique of the developments that have taken place in post independence India. Through two elderly characters, an attempt has been made to depict the rot that has set in our social and political scenario. The two freedom fighters hold a mirror to our society as it has developed in our times.

In a style that can best be described as docu-drama, the play highlights the evils facing our society. It begins with a traditional Vandana. However, the Vandana this time has nothing to do with the Almighty. It, instead, highlights the role and importance of power, black money and corruption.

The play moves in this manner to expose the politics behind highlighting western festivals and occasions like the Valentine’s Day at the cost of our own festivals. It also questions the western values that our urban population appears to have adopted at the cost of our own traditional values.

The play, in a tongue in cheek style, questions the very foundation on which the building of our body politic has been built. The wide gap between hopes and aspirations of the people who fought for our independence and the machinations of the ‘leaders’ who took over the reigns of our country after independence forms the general storyline of this gripping play. The theme of the play can best be expressed in the words of Faiz Ahmed ‘Faiz’ :

Yeh daagh daagh ujaala, yeh shab guzeeda sahar,

Woh intezaar tha jiska yeh woh sehar to nahin

Yeh woh sehar to nahin jiski aarzoo lekar

Chale the yaar ki mil jaayegi kahin na kahin

All the artistes in the play gave a good account of themselves. Subhash Singh Jamwal and Bhupinder Sigh Jamwal are two actors of Jammu stage who are closest to the definition of performers as envisaged by Bharatmuni in his Natyashastra. Actors, singers and dancers, all rolled into one. In their respective roles as Rohlu and Gohlu, the two actors kept the audience spell bound. All other artistes also gave a good account of themselves.

Music was the main highlight of the play. Meaningful lyrics and soul stirring music enhanced the appeal of the play. Lighting for the play was appropriate and costumes symbolic.

The director of the play, Bhupinder Singh Jamwal is a promising talent who has a special interest in music. His directorial debut is a welcome sign for the theatre lovers of this region. Mohan Singh, with this play, has made another addition to his vast repertoire of plays with socially relevant themes.

Asmita, Delhi will present Mahesh Dattani’s play Final Solutions in Hindi in Natyotsav tomorrow. Arvind Gaur directs.

Govt fails to make necessary arrangements, says Charak

Excelsior Correspondent

JAMMU, Mar 25: President of Dogra Sadar Sabha and chairman of Purmandal Utterbehni Shrines Development Committee, Purmandal, Mr Gulchain Singh Charak today criticised the State Government for its failure to make proper arrangements during the three-day Mela at Purmandal.

Addressing media-persons here today, Mr Charak expressed anguish over the failure of State Government to make necessary and adequate arrangements at Purmandal on the occasion of three-day Mela. Pointing towards the participation of people from all religions in the Mela he said the Mela has been spreading message of communal harmony and brotherhood at the time when whole country is reeling under the communal tension due to the burning to holy Quran but the State Government has failed to make proper arrangements for the Mela.

He alleged that no special arrangements were made by the Government for the smooth pilgrimage and said that the approachable road has not been widened to prevent accidents despite repeated recommendations to Government. "Not even a single stall was installed by the nodal agency to sell products and to make people aware of the culture of the State", chairman of the Purmandal Utter Behni Shrines Development Committee, Purmandal said, adding proper cleanliness work of the Gupt Ganga has not been initiated so far by the said agency. He stressed upon the proper planning before the Mela.

He accused the State Government of neglecting the historical places and demanded widening of road from Purmandal Morh to Purmandal, repair of all the cause-ways on the road, construction of a bridge on Devika at Mandal to make this an all weather road, necessary steps to provide all the facilities for the pilgrims, special activities on the pattern of Suraj Kund during the period of Mela and installation of boards at Railway Station, Bus Stand and other places with brief history of the historical places particularly Purmandal and their distance on it so that people can become aware of these places.

State Youth Cong demands dismissal of NDA,NC Govts

Excelsior Correspondent

JAMMU, Mar 25: State Youth Congress has demanded immediate dismissal of BJP lead NDA Government at the Centre and National Conference Government in the Jammu and Kashmir.

Addressing a press conference here today, Mr Yogesh Sawhney-Youth Congress president for J&K alleged that Tehelka.Com has totally exposed the NDA Government and the Indian Defence system. The situation in the J&K has become volatile and the NC Government has totally failed to contain militancy and provide security to the people of the State.

After cease-fire announcement by the Prime Minister, the terrorists have intensified their activities in the region. Not even a single day passes without the militants striking at vital and soft targets. The Government should have concentrated more on the need to mitigate hardships of the people as well as the meeting militants’ threat squarely. But the State Government has closed its eyes and has allowed the situation to deteriorate day by day.

The Youth Congress chief further disclosed that Party activists would stage a massive protest demonstration outside Raj Bhavan at Jammu on March 28 with the demand of dismissal of NDA Government. A memorandum will also be presented to the Governor for further handing it over to President of India.

It is very unfortunate that BJP had to go to the public and hold rallies throughout the country to justify and maintain its image after total exposure of its misdeeds by journalists of tehelka.com. Rallies are also being held in Jammu, Kathua, Udhampur and other parts of the State. Moreover, a massive rally was held at Delhi.

Senior Congress leader Rajesh Bittu said that cease-fire is being extended by Centre on the directions of NC Government. A large number of people are being killed and ultras are targetting defence installations. It should be stopped immediately and the State Government be dismissed immediately for the larger interest of the nation.

Service of man is the love for God, says Swami Paul

Excelsior Correspondent

JAMMU, Mar 25: The 13th Havan of "101-Shyama Sammoha Havan Samaroha" was performed by Swami Pal Ji at Talab Tillo area today.

The havan was participated by large number of disciples and devotees, who were seen involved in the religious fervor of the occasion.

In his address, Swami Paul described the path of religious as ultimate key to peace and progress in modern times. "It is the spirituality only which leads us to the self realisation and realisation of the God", the Swami Ji said.

He said that as human mind is engulfed in the viciousness of ego and desires, the first struggle before man following this path is to erase these two vices for self enlightenment. " The blessing of the Almighty for the awakening lies in the control of the endless human desires", he said.

Swami Paul emphasized that man has to relate " progress" to the advancement in following the spirituality in life instead of materialistic achievements and " success" to the conquering of materialistic wants and desires. Our life is most temporary, short and unforeseen, but despite knowing this, man spends the life-time in doing worldly deeds amassing money and power, he said.

Swami Ji pointed out that religion based perception of life and living in glory of divine is more relevant and of utmost urgency for its practice. " The ever-increasing hunger for power and greed for money is sheer wickedness deflecting the man from the godly path and resulting into rampant corruption and decay of human lives in society. We must devote to the virtuous path of good deeds and noble thinking inspired by the spiritual living for harsessing of true peace and contentment for the individual as well as for society. The transformation of minds of leaders towards the divinity by elimination of ego and hunger for power and money in them is highly essential for the social refinement in toady’s context", he said.

Swami Paul said that having involved the mind and intellect in religious principles and teachings, we get encouraged to do selfless service for the humanity as the service of man is the love for God. " We must take up the pursuit of divinity and make the life an offering before the Almighty by way of service for the humanity", he said, while impressing upon the disciples to undertake to do one noble deed of service for the human beings every day which would fill the life with divine grace and joy.
