Students’ open choice

Sir,

I intend to bring this fact to the notice of the State Government and the University authorities through your esteemed paper that they must consider the demand of the college students for an open choice at this juncture, even if it is not genuine, and they do not deserve it again and again.

It is true that the most precious time of the college students has been wasted not because of the college teachers and the University authorities, but only due to the wrong decision of the Government which it sometime knowingly takes by overlooking the interests of the students leaving them so much so helpless that ultimately no alternative is left to them but to come on the roads.

As far as the question of the college lecturers is concerned I have every reason to say it proudly that they do their duty efficiently well, and none of them is to blame for the strike. They wish an early return of their students to their respective colleges.

Although it is also true that the monster of this open choice will certainly swallow and mar the academic and professional careers of the students, nevertheless there is no alternative for them but to force the authorities to accept their demand for an open choice which they cannot claim every year.

As there is no way out to pacify the agitating students, it is my humble appeal to the State Government that it should consider the demand of the students for an open choice once again to save the situation and check any untoward incident. This wise step will certainly relieve the agitating college students of their mental tension and frustration being experienced by them since long.

The sooner the authorities take this decision, the better it is.

Simply Smoking

Sir,

This has reference to the article titled "simply smoking" by S Joginder Singh which appeared in Daily Excelsior dated 11th March 2001. Therein the learned writer has rightly diagnosed the ills afflicting various deptts. of the Govt. by stating that what has been conveniently forgotten is the basic axiom that it is the man, at the helm of affairs who is important and not the system. With the best of men, any system will work. But with the worst and ill motivated men, even best system will be reduced to a bush.

The general impression being currently carried by most of the people is that work culture in Govt. Deptts. has suffered considerably over a period of time because of several factors, the prime amongst them is the lack of sincerity in discharging the assigned official duties, which in turn effect adversely the efficacy of the prevalent system. There of course may be a little scope for minor alterations/modifications in the existing system necessitated with the passage of time, but to discard and denounce the systems in vogue instead of owning the onus for the deterioration in any system having taken place could not be justified.

That is why keeping this factor in mind the Govt. is presently going is big way towards privatisation even in the face of strong opposition from its employees with a view to restore the efficiency as well as the efficacy of the existing systems and to optimally utilize the scare resources of the country.

Sooner this fact is realised by us all, better it would be for all of us and the prosperity and well being of the country as a whole.

Plight of Mahore migrants

Sir,

Militancy has hit J & K State terribly and it has left no aspect of life untouched. Though all sections of the society have been effected in one way or the other, in this backdrop we also have a woeful tale to tell.

We the people belonging various villages of Teh Mahore are living a pathetic life since we migrated from these village in the wake of militancy. We had to migrate after militants struck at Prankote, Baryana, Chlad and Shajroo, killing innocent people. 35 people were killed at Prankote in 1997.

Since then we have been living in sub-human conditions at Jyotipuram, Poni, Dharmari, Salal, Arnas Udhampur and Reasi. But, unfortunately, no one has come to help us at this juncture. Government has abandoned us, as takes no case of our daily needs, safety, education and other problems like health. Even water is not available.

Our Children are without education. Their career has been spoiled. We approached several authorities to draw attention to our problems, but nobody is ready to listen us. We request the Government to mitigate our problems by bringing us at par with KPs with regard to relief. Provide us basic amenities at our habitation. Medical care should be provide to all the migrants here.

Last but not least, the education of our children should be streamlined.

Yours etc..
