PPEU urges State Govt to take back its decision

KATHUA, Mar 6: A meeting of Provincial Power Employees Union was held under the chairmanship of its provincial president Mr Shakti Gupta here today in which PDD daily wagers and employees of district participated.

As per a release, Mr Madan Gopal Gupta, provincial secretary PPEU Jammu and Mr Romesh Chander, district president Kathua strongly condemned the decision regarding termination of services of daily wagers who were engaged after January 1994 and threatened with dire consequences if the Government did not take back its decision.

The demands regarding regularisation of daily wagers, circulation of seniority list of daily wagers and also other regular employees of all categories and two and half day salary to PDD employees working as lineman and change of their designation in service books were also discussed in the meeting.

Messrs Azaz Qazmi, Sanjeev Bali, Koushal Sharma, Rajinder Kumar, Ashok Badyal, Rattan Dogra, Baldev Singh Sambyal, Ram Paul Khajuria, Rajeev Thapa, Deepa and Krishan Pal Singh were also spoke on the occasion.

Mr Shakti Gupta while speaking on the occasion warned the State Government not to play with the sentiments of PDD daily wagers and said that if Government will not change its attitude towards them the employees will be left with no other option then to start agitation.

Mr Madan Gopal and Romesh Chander appealed the district PDD employees to gear up the revenue realisation so that fixed target could be achieved.

JJSF for immediate CBI inquiry into Meenakshi case

JAMMU, Mar 6: Jammu Joint Students Federation (JJSF) has demanded immediate commencement of CBI enquiry into the Meenakshi kidnapping episode as the people in Udhampur are feeling insecure and terrified due to the alleged police attempt to shield the culprits.

As per a release, a delegation of JJSF comprising of Kuljeet Singh, Ajatshatru Singh, Deepak Salathia and Opinder Kundal visited Udhampur and met cross section of people who expressed apprehension that police and district administration is involved in an operation to shield accused.

The Federation said that Government should let the CBI complete probe and bring the whole truth before the people who are now being misled by vested interests and rumour mongers. The Federation also warned that if the state administration tried to harass the masses of Udhampur it would be forced to launch ‘Quit Jammu’ movement against the Kashmiri ruling elite.

Eid-ul-Zuha celebrated in Leh

LEH, Mar 6: Eid-ul-Zuha was celebrated in the district with religious fervor and traditional gaiety.

As per a release, Namaz-e- Eid and respective congregational prayers were offered at Imamia Eid-Gah Masjid, Shay, Thiksay and Fiayang. The big congregational prayer was offered at Imamia Jamia Masjid Leh under the Jammat of Sheikh Mohammad Ali, Imam Jumma wherein thousands of Muslims participated.

Speaking on the occasion, Sheikh Mohammad Ali highlighted the significance of the day and stressed upon the Muslims to follow the principles of Islam.

On the occasion, Imam Jumma also strongly condemned the destruction of ancient Buddha statues by the Taliban and described the action as unwarranted, uncivilised and un-Islamic because Islam orders us to respect the places of worship or other religions and does not allow the destruction of religious places of any community.

Mr Dheeraj Gupta, Deputy Commissioner and SP Leh were also present on the occasion to greet the Muslims.

At the conclusion, special prayers were observed for world peace, prosperity, brother-hood and communal harmony among different section of the community.

HPCL conducts ‘Mock Fire Drill’

JAMMU, Mar 6: Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) successfully conducted "Mock Fire Drill" during the National safety Week on Disaster Management at its LPG Bottling Plant in SIDCO Industrial Complex at Bari Brahmana, yesterday.

The Plant is also conducting the 30th National Safety Week from March 4 to 11. The drill was conducted involving senior Government officials, Additional Deputy Commissioner Jammu, Mr B Sharma, Joint Director Fire Services, Mr R S Sodhi, Regional Director State Pollution Control Board, Mr Sharma, Inspectors of factories, Messrs K K Gupta and A S Chib, Police and Local Fire Brigade and other oil companies officials and neighbouring industries.

Spread over an area of 33.71 acre of land HP Gas Plant is involved in storage, bottling and distribution of Liquified Petroleum Gas for domestic and commercial use under a well organised distribution network.

Highlighting the main purpose behind the Mock Fire Drill, Plant Manager Mr R K Tewary said though LPG is a boon to present day mankind, if mishandled it can prove to be a curse. He said through the Mock Drill HPCL wanted to ensure preparedness of the Corporation for any eventuality.

Mr Tewary also released the upgraded Crisis Management Plan on the occasion. he said the Plant has the capacity to face any major disaster and has developed a Disaster Management Scheme with the help of neighbouring Industries in Bari Brahmana Industrial Complex and the district administration. He said the Plant has lot of inbuilt safety devices, but all these will be effective only if organised properly through human and material resources available.

It was a war like scene at the plant when the Mock Fire Drill was being conducted. The overall operation was completed within 20 minutes. The Drill consisted of three teams, Fire Combat Team, Rescue Team and Auxillary Team, mainly from Plant staff. besides Fire Workmen, Police Personnel and representatives of mutual aid partners also participated.

The Disaster Control Management Plan at the Plant indicated the overall coordination of various activities viz Administrative, maintenance and Safety.

earlier welcoming the gathering Mr R N Mathur, regional Manager stressed on the need of such a Mock Fire Drill. He said the Plant has mainly four bullets with a storage capacity of 570 MT. He revealed that once LPG catches fire, it cannot be extinguished and primarily measures are taken to contain spread of same. Priority is given to save the bullets from getting blasted due to heat generated from the fire and that is why water is sprinkled on bullets with fire extinguishers, he said ensuring the plant had adequate capacity of water storage system with its own tubewells.

All the senior officers appreciated the Mock Fire Drill.

Senior Safety Officer of the Unit, Mr Dharam Pal, opined that the basis of any accident are either lack of awareness or over-confidence. He also stressed upon the importance of conducting such drills on regular basis to tackle any eventuality occurring due to leakage of LPG or fire. he presented vote of thanks to all local administration and also the mutual aid partners.

28th National Conference of Indian Asso held

JAMMU, Mar 6: The three day long 28th National Conference of Indian Association of Preventive and Social Medicine concluded yesterday. A total Number of 300 public health specialists, academicians and researchers from across the country participated in the conference.

As per a release, the theme of the Conference was "Into the 21st century": Challenges and commitments in Community Health."Various scientific sessions of the conference were supported by UNICEF, UNAIDS, WHO, NACO, J&K AIDS Prevention and Control Society, Serm Institute of Pune and Ministry of Social Justice and empowerment.

Meanwhile, in the general body meeting of the Indian Association of Prevention & Social Medicine, Dr Abdul Rauf, Principal Government Medical College Srinagar was elected president of the Association for the year 2001-2002. Dr Bhupinder Singh, Head of the Department, Community Medicine, Government Medical College, Jammu was elected as its vice president.

The valedictory function was chaired by outgoing president of the Association Dr K Raghav Prasad from Triputi.

The Yatra started on March 3 from border village of Palanwala and it marched through several villages of Akhnoor during the same day. Next day it touched Kanachak and Damana.

On the third day the Yatra passed through , Flora Nazbani, Indore, Alka Marh, Dayala Chak, Patanchak, Akalpur, Sarora, Padrot, Dai Chak and culminated at Kou Mansa.

Addressing the public meetings Prof Bhim Singh accused the BJP, NC alliance for worsening situation in the state threatening the unity and integrity of the country.

He demanded that J&K should be declared as disturbed area in the interest of justice, security and integrity of the nation. A resolution in this regard was also passed by the Party workers at a meeting at Kou Mansa.

Condemning the killing of security men by mercenaries he said the ceasefire declared by the Prime Minister is a fraud on the people as it has threatened their very existence. He also alleged that the Chief Minister Dr Farooq Abdullah is playing in the hands of American lobby to destablise the national boundaries. He also said the autonomy demand raised by Farooq Abdullah is a part of Dixon plan.

He while highlighting the local problems demanded that the water be released in the Ranbir Canal to save many villages from the disaster.

Hundreds throng Chandra Guffa

JAMMU, Mar 6: Hundreds of devotees from all walks of life today thronged the Chandra Guffa to participate in the birth day of Shri Chandra Swami which was celebrated with full religious fervour and gaiety.

The devotees paid their obeisance to Swami Ji to seek his blessings. A bhandara was also held on the occasion and people were served prasad.

Swami Ji who comes from the spiritual tradition of the great Udasin Sage Baba Bhuman Shah of 18th century reached here on March 4 to participate in the function.

Swami Ji who is presently head of Shri Chander Chinar Trust Srinagar had initiation into spirituality at the early age of 17 years and in 1952 he opted for Sanyas when his age was 22 years.

From 1952 to 1960 Swami Ji performed extensive Sadhana both at Hari Parbat in Srinagar and Chandra Guffa in Jammu and attained self realisation.

From 1961 to 1970 he lived in a secluded forested island near Sapta Sarovar, Haridwar at the banks of holy river Ganga which was an abode of snakes and wild animals. It is here Swami Ji was blessed with spiritual fulfillment.

The Chandra Guffa Ashram has been developed as a place of Sadhana (spiritual effort) open to all seekers of truth.

Swami Ji has been observing an unbreakable silence from last 16 years. His teachings are simple serve the poor and needy in the name of God.

Hundreds participate in Eid Namaz

RAJOURI, Mar 6: Eid ul Zuha was celebrated with traditional religious fervour and gaiety in this border town today.

Hundreds of Muslims led by Moulvi Ghulam Rasool Khatib held the Eid Prayers at Eid Gah Rajouri. Among the prominent persons who participated in special Eid Namaz (prayers) include Deputy Commissioner, Rajouri, Mr K A Khan and MLC Nazir Ahmed Mir.

On the occasion prayers for the restoration of peace in the trouble torn state were also held.

Later Mr Nazir Ahmed Mir visited the district Hospital Rajouri to inquire about the cops who have been injured in recent militants attack at Kot Dhara. The MLC distributed fruit among them. He also prayed for their speedy recovery.

Talibans’ action condemned

UDHAMPUR, March 6: Artists, intellectuals, historians, social workers and writers of the district in a meeting held here today expressed serious concern over the uncultured action of Afghan radical rulers Taliban for destroying cultural heritage of mankind.

According to a release, an emergency meeting in this connection was held here today under the chairmanship of Prof Shiv Nirmohi. Speaking on the occasion, social activists Ranjit Parihar and Anil Paba criticised the Talibanis and maintained that they have no regard for the feelings of mankind. They said Talibanis can demolish statues of Lord Buddha but could not donate peoples of world from following his teachings of ‘Ahinsa Parma Dharma’, which is need of the hour.

The other members present in the meeting called upon the world community to jointly fight the world fundamentalism and terrorism which is emerging as great threat to the mankind. They also sought the cooperation of UNESCO and the super-powers in preventing this massive destruction of world heritage.

BJYM chief accorded warm welcome

JAMMU, Mar 6: State president of Bhartiya Janata Yuva Morcha, Mr Satish Sharma, was accorded a warm welcome in his Billawar Assembly constituency by the people from the core of their hearts today.

A BJYM release said a grand rally comprising cars, jeeps and other vehicles left Jammu for Billawar. Enroute the rally was joined by a large number of people and after crossing Dyalachak, a large number of people including women and children joined the rally.

Mr Satish Sharma was accompanied by Member of Parliament Vaid Vishnu Dutt, and BJP MLAs Ashok Khajuria and Bali Bhagat. Other party leaders accompanying Mr Satish Sharma included Messrs Shamsher Singh Manhas, Ranjit Singh Jasrotia, district Kathua BJP president, State BJYM general secretary Tilak Raj Gupta, Pradesh vice president of BJYM Narinder Mahajan.

The BJP Beopar Morcha president Mr Ashwani Bali, Pradesh Working Committee member of BJP Mr Shiv Kumar Gupta, Kathua BJYM president Ajay Gupta and BJYM members Messrs Rajesh Dutta, Lalit Sharma, Rajesh Gupta, Rajnish Sharma, Atul Mangotra, Anil Khajuria and Sudershan Khajuria also accompanied.

The rally comprising more than 50 vehicles was greeted by the people of Billawar Tehsil amidst beating of drums by the people. Mr Satish Sharma, state president of Bhartiya Janata Yuva Morcha was garlanded profusely. The people of Ramkot, the home town of Mr Satish Sharma, expressed their joy and danced to the tune of drums. At Ramkot Mr Satish Sharma was accorded welcome by Billawar BJP Mandal president Mr Sham Lal Sapolia, senior vice president Mr Shambhu Dutt, Satpal Gupta and Mr Tek Chand Sharma read out a poem on the life of Mr Satish Sharma.

Mr Satish Sharma, Vaid Vishnu Dutt, MP, Ashok Khajuria and Bali Bhagat were carried in an open Rath (vehicle) forward. They were given rousing reception at Gujroo Nagrota, Thara Kalwal, Gurah Kalyal, Mandli, Finter, Billawar and Sukrala,

The BJYM has arranged a community kitchen at Finter for partymen.
