Inept Indian batting helps Aussies extend record run

MUMBAI, Mar 1: Another inept batting display by the Indian team today allowed the formidable Australians to secure their 16th successive test win, beating the home side comprehensively by 10 wickets in less than three days.

Sachin Tendulkar waged a lonely battle with another solid 65 before his innings was brought to an end by an incrediable catch by Ricky Ponting who, at midwicket, dived a long way to take the ball which ricocheted off the shoulder of Justin Langer at forward short leg. The bowler to benefit was the not-so-regular Mark Waugh.

In the first innings also, Tendulkar had top scored with a magnificent 76.

There was no hint of an impending Indian slide when Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid began at the overnight score 58 for two and were unseparated at lunch with the total reading 116.

But once Tendulkar made his exit at the team total of 154, the rest just caved in and the Indian second innings terminated at 219 shortly after tea.

The victory target of 47 was nothing for the aussies who achieved it without losing a wicket.

India, who were shot out for 176 in their first innings and conceded a 173 run lead when Australia replied with 349, started the third day today.

The duo added 97 valuable runs for the third wicket that ultimately proved decisive in avoiding an innings defeat.

Tendulkar struck 11 well struck boundaries in his 107-ball knock when disaster struck the hosts who lost four vital wickets within the space of 20 runs which made an Australian win, their fifth straight over India, a formality.

After Tendulkar’s stunning dismissal, Dravid was bowled by Shane Warne for a patient 39 and Mark Waugh then dismissed Ajit Agarkar for his seventh consecutive nought against the Australians.

Captain Saurav Ganguly, was late to take off for a single and was found short of his crease by an accurate throw by Michael Slater to be run out for one.

V V S Laxman flourished for some time cracking three successive fours off Warne to take his team past the deficit but was out immediately after, caught by Adam Gilchrist off Mark Waugh.

Harbhajan Singh, who scalped four wickets in Australian first innings, made a defiant unbeaten 17 but that was hardly enough as rest of the tailenders were dismissed tamely. (PTI)

Officials say drug tests won’t risk dream teams

NEW YORK, Mar 1: NHL and NBA officials have said they were not worried that US Olympic Committee (USOC) initiatives on doping would pose a threat to the "dream teams" that have enlivened Olympic competition.

The USOC Executive Committee passed a resolution last Friday saying pro athletes who want to be in the Olympics would have to declare up to a year before the games and could be included in a pool of players eligible for random drug testing, the New York Times reported in yesterday’s edition.

The Times quoted officials of the North American professional leagues as saying they were taken by surprise by the USOC resolution and were notsure of the potential consequences.

Reached by Reuters later yesterday’s league officials were reluctant to discuss any specifics of the resolution but were putting a different spin on the subject.

"I did have a discussion with (USOC President) Scott Blackmun and we’re going to talk further about what their marching orders mean as far as participation of NHL athletes in the Olympics," said Bill Daly, the NHL’s chief legal counsel.

"I’m confident we’ll be able to work out a protocol and procedure that would be fine for us." (REUTERS)
