Water scarcity in Kunjwani

Sir,

This is with reference to a Press Release published in the Daily Excelsior on April 15, 2001.

Since past year, President Joint welfare committee has met SE, PHE a no. of times and approved him of drinking water crises in the area, but it is a matter of regret that no fruitful results have come up. During October, 2000 President JWC announced publicly that drinking water problem would be over by end of the year as he was assured by the PHE officials. But till date nothing has been done.

It is surprising to know that now PHE authority has put ball in the court of consumers to arrange 5 marla land and to approach Chief Engineer MRE Division to connect the Tube Well with industry line. This decision seems to be an eye wash just to deceive people.

Drinking water at present is made available for 15-20 minutes on alternate days at a low pressure which is not enough to be stored even for one day consumption.

I request to SE PHE to depute a team of officers to carry out physical survey to contact the land Lords and Chief Engr. MRE Div. Their contact would have more effect. However, all necessary assistance can be provided by the locals to the team of officers.

Water supply after one day's gap is also acceptable subject to the condition that it should at least for one hour till PHE authority complete their estimates and other formalities. Further, I request the PHE officials to undertake works on Top Priority basis so that long pending drinking water problem is overcome.

A colony without water

Sir,

Roop Nagar a beautiful locality of Jammu city is situated on a hilly area boasting of cool breeze, pollution free environment.

So many top personalities, bureaucrats including Ministers have chosen this area to live peacefully. It is a known fact that every human being is always in search of peace. People living in the area so nice and great that they do not bother to make a hue and cry. No problem, if water supply is made by the authorities after 5-6 days or even after seven days; at times depending upon the good will of the authorities. The people of the area have become habitual of it. This is a symbol of Roop (Beauty). The Electric Deptt is playing hide and seek with residents. The area reminding people of their childhood when they might have played this game. Just imagine the friendship between the Power Deptt. and the residents: what then if they are facing the scorching heat but still they tolerate it.

If any person desires to live to this locality, he is most welcome. But he should have the qualifications as mentioned above to tolerate all that the present residents are tolerating.

Drug abuse

Sir,

Gone are the days when drugs belonged to the realm of the rich, west influenced college youth. Today's drug addict is a common youth. These drugs have reached small towns and villages and are fast spreading to all sections of society. Its spread is not only causing health problems but also hindering our economic progress.

Some students take them as a source of enjoyment, while other take them to forget tensions are worries at home. Though, the most prominent reason for indulgence may be parental negligence. The checks by them give rise to a number of youths falling in the company of wrong people. Lastly, there are some who fall prey to drugs due to unawareness of the dangerous effects of the drugs.

This increasing drug addiction among school and college students has become a new challenge for today's teacher. Because teacher is supposed to develop a students personality, including their moral and intellectual well growth, teachers have to re-examine their role in the drug affected environment of the day. It is all the more important because the students who fall prey to drugs cannot achieve the desired goals, as drugs suppress their ability to learn and consequently their academic performance becomes poor. The desire for drugs often keeps the addict away from his school or college. His only concern is to discover ways and means to meet the required dosage of drugs. Such a students often ultimately resort to pick-pocketing, theft etc. Such undesirable activities lead him to join hands with anti-social and anti-national forces, who is their place use them as conduits of drug supply to other students in college or school. Thus defeating the very purpose of education.

No other person other than teacher is competent to handle this job effectively. They have to play a key role in this affair. The teacher should be able to help strengthen their will power and determination. This can be done by diverting their attention towards meaningful activities. In this aspect, the school and college authorities, should work hand in hand like providing ground, library and other recreational facilities, helping them take part in cultural activities, excursions etc. All these activities should help in diverting the energy of these adolescents to a useful purpose and thus develop some meaning in their life.

Besides all these meaningful activities drug-awareness among the students should be created by making it a part of school and college curriculum. Occasional lectures by experts and former addicts, should be conducted. Besides film shows paintings and posters should be displayed on regular basis to make them conscious of the effect of drugs. Thus the role of teachers in controlling the menace of drugs is of prime importance.
