Separatist leader blasts Hurriyat NEW DELHI, June 26: Prominent London-based separatist leader Mohammed Ayub Thakur, who fled the Kashmir valley in the early 80s to launch a secessionist movement, has lambasted the Hurriyat Conference and described the seven executive members of the conglomerate as a "bunch of self-centred and shameless people." Accusing the Hurriyat leadership of indulging in petty politics, Dr Thakur, who has highlighted the Kashmir cause at various international fora, said the very basis and direction of "our political movement" was wrong. He made these observations in an interview to the weekly Chattan. "The Hurriyat is an apex body of various separatist and secessionist groups, having different ideologies and approaches on the Kashmir issue. Its leaders lack political maturity and are involved in a game of one-upmanship," the leader asserted. Referring to the proposed summit meeting between Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee and Pakistan President Gen Pervez Musharraf, Dr Thakur said that Islamabad should insist on involving the Kashmiris in the dialogue. He, however, lauded the Kashmir leadership for refusing to enter into a dialogue with the Centre. Dr Thakur, who is the chief of the World Kashmir Freedom Movement, favoured setting up of an accountability commission to probe assets of seperatist leaders, who are at present leading the Kashmir movement. He admitted that the Hurriyat leaders had advised him against such a call, saying it would expose them. He held that if any leader was reluctant to disclose his assets, it meant he was not honest. The seperatist leader disclosed that Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah advised him not to visit the Valley during a meeting in Jeddah in the early 90s, after seeing adverse reports about the latter at the Indian consulate in Jeddah. Dr Thakur did his doctorate from Kashmir University and joined as a lecturer there, but was sacked from service for indulging in political activities. He later shifted to Saudi Arabia, from where he migrated to Britain. (UNI) |
