LEDEG proposes project of solar highting in Leh

From Tashi Morup

Leh, June 24: The Sun a forever energy reserve will take over the conventional Diesel and other fuels in everyday use in Durbuk Block of Leh District in the coming years. Ladakh Ecological Development Group (LEDeG) proposed a seven-crore project to have Solar lighting, heating and other technologies using Sunlight and heat in this area is in the pipeline.

This was stated by Sonam Dawa, Executive Director, LEDeG today in a show organised to celebrate June 21 (longest day) as the Solar Day for the first time in Leh town. About 80 school children marched through the market with placards advocating use of environment friendly solar energy. Children also staged satirical plays on the use of polluting generators before every shop in the wake of poor power supply in Leh. Later in the trip to LEDeG's Solar Centre at Rebuk foothill of Shanti Stupa children keenly saw and understood the different solar technologies.

Heat trapping Trombe walls, Community Solar Cooker, Green House, Solar water heater and even Solar toilet are some of the features of this multipurpose Solar Centre. And soon LEDeG is coming out with a Solar Shop where these active and passive solar technologies will be available on subsidised rates sponsored by Government of India.

LEDeG also has a plan to have a Building Centre at the proposed Nimaling Satellite Township site at Choglamsar. For this building, meant to disseminate information and service for cost-effective ram-earth (Gyapak) Solar buildings, Hill Council has already allotted 26-kanal land. And a grant of 15 lac rupees have been sanctioned by Government of India's HUDCO for this purpose. However, another project to equip about 20 households in Housing Colony to be accomplished in collaboration with a French NGO GERES awaits Hill Council's approval.

But the most important seven-crore Durbuk project is likely to get complete sanction by February next year when the work on it would begin. And under this project LEDeG would assist the natives to open tourist huts and other solar facilities in the Pangong area, said P Namgyal, Director, LEDeG. Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development too has kept solar energy as a major option for power supply. In Nyoma block a 40-kilowatt Solar Power Station is already on electrifying about 370 households.

According to Lobzang Tsering a member of TATA BP Solar India Limited, Ladakh with its 300 sunny days has the power potential of 4.5 watt per square meter. But so far the utilisation is relatively almost nil, he added. And Sun is the best renewable source of energy. LEDeG has the records of data including daily average global Solar energy values for each month at Leh, Sunshine duration values for Leh, Kargil and Sumoor (Nubra) and estimated values for the global Solar energy at Kargil and Sumoor.

The annual average global solar energy on a horizontal plane for Leh is estimated at 5530 Whr per square meter per day and at a 35-degree south facing tilt the annual average is 6360 Whr per square meter per day. These data confirm that Leh has an excellent solar resource. Sites are typically related as 'good' solar sites when they have an annual average of at least 5000 Whr per square meter per day solar energy available on a horizontal plane. The average annual values for Kargil and Nubra are estimated at 5580 Whr per square meter per day and 5490 Whr per square meter per day respectively.

These values are nearly identical to the solar energy available at Leh which suggests that the regional variation in solar energy are relatively small. However, the primary difference in the availability of solar energy for various towns in Ladakh is due to mountain shading rather than regional variations in the solar resource.
